Filmed on 4 December at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel peninsular, New Zealand. I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing.

  • The mom and babies were so gentle. Mom knew exactly what she was doing, getting close to check out the person swimming, being curious and extraordinarily gentle. A truly amazing event. Never in human history have wild orcas attacked a person. Unfortunately, we haven't returned the courtesy.

    • That's an excellent idea, I'll get in touch with director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, somehow... a positive film about human-orca interactions. Do you know that in the mid-1950s the U.S. Navy, at the request of the government of Iceland, went to war against orcas so that the Icelandic fishing fleet could catch all the herring? I have copies of the Navy journals that briefly describe the operation and what units took part. One can only imagine the horrible carnage. Thank Poseidon the Navy got out of the business of executing orcas, at least now they treat them with a modicum of respect, when they aren't bombarding them with deafening sonar blasts.

    • Not weird. It makes perfect sense. It shows that it is only when an orca is frustrated because of being stolen from it's family and confined in a large tub for the rest of it's life to be forced to perform for people that it ever resorts to attacking people. That clearly shows that orcas in the wild do not want to harm humans. BUT, captured orcas are miserable, angry and depressed and for good reason. They are bored, frustrated and miss their family. Just like a good person would act differently if they were taken from their family and never allowed to see them again and confined in one room where they were forced to do something every single day. A lot of people would crack and you would, too. I know I would. It is 100% the fault of the people that forced those orcas to perform at Seaworld. They have no right to confine these intelligent, sentient animals.

  • It's a female with its baby.. The mid size one is an aunt or older sibling. I've seen them doing this with harbor seals.. Only they were practicing catching and throwing it... Then they let it go. She was likely teaching the baby how to use sonar to echo locate prey... And possibly showing the baby that people aren't normally on the menu.

  • I've had the rare pleasure of having Orca encounters twice while SCUBA diving. They seem to be genuinely curious and enjoy interacting with humans. There is a video on YT about the Orcas alerting New Zealand whalers by splashing their tails on the surface when baleen whales were in the area, and would guide the whalers to their prey. It seems that the Aboriginal people of the area began the practice before Europeans arrived. Thank you Dylan for this rare glimpse. You were very fortunate to be there at that particular time.

    @cmspet1@cmspet15 жыл бұрын
    • Actually, that's "Killers in Eden", about the New South Wales whaling community of Eden on Twofold Bay, where the orca actually swam up to the village to alert the whalers, and the humans in whaling rowboats hunted migrating baleen whales together. The deal was that the whalers left the carcass anchored off the village for a while, while the orca ate the lips and tongue, before the whale was hauled and and processed by the humans. It seems that the local aboriginals had had a similar arrangement with the orca, possibly for thousands of years, but it had a sad ending in the 1920's when a white resident hurt the main orca communicator "Tom", and the pod was probably killed off elsewhere. The orca of Eden are said to have rescued whalers whose boats were destroyed during hunts. There is a killer whale museum in Eden.

  • The larger is mom baby and another juvenile. They are always such curious,inquisitive, intelligent animals. Just recently Scott Eastwood had an encounter off of Baja, CA. While paddleboarding. I had an encounter in Santa Barbara about 4 yrs ago with a mom and baby while paddleboarding with a group of 3 friends. We ended up stopping and sitting on our boards. The mom would come up and touch our feet with her mouth, more of a nudge. Then let the baby up from below her to explore us. They stayed for 20-30 mins. Then just swam away. Honestly, the most amazing experience of my life. When ppl. Refer to them as "Killer Whales" it really offends me because they are gentle and playful at heart. The silly ones in the Whale Family.

    @U2JEN2U@U2JEN2U5 жыл бұрын
    • These apex predators are killers. They will track a baby whale FOR HOURS pushing it under water to tire it out and separate it from its mother. They kill seals, sharks, and other manner of sea life. Why these close encounters with humans without a kill is anybody's guess.

They will be aggressive if humans are bothering them and will let them know when they have had enough by pushing, nudging or tail slapping. I think they know they are the kings of the ocean.

    • The problem with killer whales and dolphins is that they are extremely intelligent so you never know if you are gonna get the classic "gentle" one or a pure bully that may think it's funny to kill you... they have much more in common with humans than sharks on that point wich is why you can have techniques that allow you to swim with shark and prevent attacks, their personality matters less than with more intelligent animals. But yeah I think getting to swim with killer whales must be like meeting with aliens. Truly an incredible experience

  • Thank you for getting this footage. It helps people see what beautiful curious, smart, beings we share this earth with. They should never be put in a fish tank and be made to do tricks while we eat popcorn and clap. God bless.

  • Great footage!! I'm also a Mavic user and I have to say, they are such an awesome drone. Hopefully this story will also alleviate the often fanatical views some people have about drones.

  • Great video. I spent a lot of time on the water between the 70s and the 90s. The local pod where I live are fish eaters, and they would often come right up to the boat, and sometimes put on a show for us. They would sometimes broach close enough to the boat that we felt they were playing with us. They seemed friendly enough, but I never got the urge to jump in the water and swim with them. They are absolutely beautiful creatures. Bob

  • Thank you for such remarkable footage. To capture this is truly a treat for all to see. Looks like the whale was trying to show the woman back to shore .... he/she nudged at her, like trying to steer her to shallow water looks like to me. Truly amazing to see. God is wonderous!!!

  • Like I am sure it's been said before - that's not a male orca - it's a mom with 2 generations of calves - one older than the other. Amazing footage, and so lucky to be in there at that moment!! Orcas are SO intelligent!
