Filmed on 4 December at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel peninsular, New Zealand. I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing.

The mom and babies were so gentle. Mom knew exactly what she was doing, getting close to check out the person swimming, being curious and extraordinarily gentle. A truly amazing event. Never in human history have wild orcas attacked a person. Unfortunately, we haven't returned the courtesy.
The Orca is very careful and gentle approaching the swimmer as if it know she is fragile. Very intelligent mammal.
It also looks her straight in the eye and them rolls to show her belly. This is a non aggression sign.
This could only be made more awesome by an interview with the woman who is swimming with orcas. Would be really cool to know what was going through her mind, how she was feeling, what experience was like for her.
There is a video of her somewhere on here talking about her training swim
This would be made even more awesome by an interview with the orcas.
@@Roadjull 😁
Here's the interview with the swimmer: kzhead.info/sun/hdWcf8WjkKWhhGw/bejne.html
Kara Curtis OK, you’re awesome...
Unreal for both the Orcas and the swimmer. I have surfed for 30 years with dolphins in the water right next to me. So close you can smell their fish breath and feel the warmth of their breath. There is nothing like it. Thanks for sharing their wonderful moments.
sounds like my ex gf

Lucky you!!!
@e causey That must have been an exceptional experience for such a young person. I hope you still enjoy and cherish the ocean, its an incredible place. I love the ocean. I have had the fortune to travel to different places and dive in the most beautiful places in the worlds oceans. Its a shame we dont have gills.....Id never be on land. Great day too you!
I must have watched the original video 20+ times. What an awesome moment to capture. Thank you for sharing with the world.
So.. did you not think the momma was asking the swimmer for help eryn her bigger calf and whatever seemed to be stuck in his mouth?
@@jenniferjackwak7952 Eagle ray, not bag.
That wasn't a male. That was mum with this year's and last year's calves.
Yes, besides being with two calves, you can tell by the shape of the dorsal fin that it's a female.
@Miepi09 killer whales female gestation from 15 to 18 months (average 17 months) and they give birth every 3 to 5 years and some might not have another baby within 10 years....
Miepi09 Your comment was useless!
HEART OF A WARRIOR Oooh! How original, you sure got me! Stay in your own lane, little one😝
Mother's stay with young to feed
the lady swimmer is a great athlete - beautiful documentation worthy of Planet Earth
Talk about being in the right place at the right time! You have just made the epic video of the year in my opinion!
Thanks Maggie, yeah lucky I had the drone with me.
Why do you think he wants to license it.....The tight bastard.
One of the most amazing videos I've seen. Thank you
@@7Earthsky because he caught something incredible. What's your point?
Lori Palmieri If you don't get the point he's being a right bastard, you're beyond help.
They should make a Blackfish sequel focusing on wild orcas about how friendly they are to humans versus orcas in captivity. Beautiful video, kudos.
Great idea
That's an excellent idea, I'll get in touch with director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, somehow... a positive film about human-orca interactions. Do you know that in the mid-1950s the U.S. Navy, at the request of the government of Iceland, went to war against orcas so that the Icelandic fishing fleet could catch all the herring? I have copies of the Navy journals that briefly describe the operation and what units took part. One can only imagine the horrible carnage. Thank Poseidon the Navy got out of the business of executing orcas, at least now they treat them with a modicum of respect, when they aren't bombarding them with deafening sonar blasts.
It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
Hahahaha! Holy shit! Laughed so hard I choked😝
Crazy, but beautiful.
The best
Sandra Buckett only topped by the time some swam into cork bay in Ireland half the country drove down to see them, my cousin had a house on the bay head so we could camp with our dogs right on the bay all the ppl were so happy but as soon as we got there we felt sadness in the whole situation, we found out why not long after as it was 2 cows bringing an old dear in to die in the mouth of the river very sad..but very beautiful creatures 😔
4 people have died to orcas in history, all at seaworld, wierd.
Not weird. It makes perfect sense. It shows that it is only when an orca is frustrated because of being stolen from it's family and confined in a large tub for the rest of it's life to be forced to perform for people that it ever resorts to attacking people. That clearly shows that orcas in the wild do not want to harm humans. BUT, captured orcas are miserable, angry and depressed and for good reason. They are bored, frustrated and miss their family. Just like a good person would act differently if they were taken from their family and never allowed to see them again and confined in one room where they were forced to do something every single day. A lot of people would crack and you would, too. I know I would. It is 100% the fault of the people that forced those orcas to perform at Seaworld. They have no right to confine these intelligent, sentient animals.
Understandable.
Not weird.. we saw that coming, from the start! 😕
Timothy Treadwell was killed by a tagged brown bear. Tagged bears seem to get an attitude towards people.
@Chic 'N' Stu now that I reread it, you are right. my bad. :P
Thanks for posting this and the original footage. Such a surreal interaction with the Orcas. The swimmer puts her absolute trust in these gentle, although massive, friends in the ocean. Thanks soooo much for sharing.
That footage is so unbelievable. Not only could you tell the lady was having a great moment and she was calm, but the footage is so crazy that people even think it is photoshopped.
IT'S AMAZING. I'VE GOT A VIDEO OF THAT SAME LADY (SHE ALWAYS SWIMNS THERE) SWIMMING WITH AROUND 5 DOLPHINS!!!!
YOU SHOULD LOAD THAT UP
This was absolutely awesome to watch. Would love to hear what the swimmer thought. Must have been a massive privilege, and startling at the same time.

@@DylanBrayshaw she seems like such a nice lady! and your baby - oh my god, is the cutest!
Seems like a _once in a lifetime_ experience for *both* of you! Glad you were there to capture it and share it with the world. (I'll bet the swimmer was happy to see this!)
This moment is priceless! Im so glad that you got to film this.
Dylan Brayshaw, I saw both videos and they are beautiful. Thank your partner for bringing the drone out. The video and the back story are extraordinary, and an excellent way to start my day.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this footage but both the lady and the orcas meet each other on a level of beauty and grace. The thumbnail shows mum, and her two calves who are sharing food together.
It's a female with its baby.. The mid size one is an aunt or older sibling. I've seen them doing this with harbor seals.. Only they were practicing catching and throwing it... Then they let it go. She was likely teaching the baby how to use sonar to echo locate prey... And possibly showing the baby that people aren't normally on the menu.
Keyword: NORMALLY
My sentiments exactly was thinking the mother orca was teaching baby orcas valuable lessons on a none threatening object in a sense, Hunting and echolocation
@@michaelclay7695 non-threatening? If you're right, the irony of that is we're about the only thing that does threaten them.
Technically we are, but in that very moment nah
Paul Is Orcas have never attacked a person on the wild. Watch Blackfish and you’ll find out why captive Orcas have attacked.
What a crazy experience. Would imagine that she had previously bumped into the orcas and most likely panicked and swam away but realized they weren't there to harm her. Now they're like her swimming friends.
How absolutely beautiful and exhilarating that had to have been! THATS true SeaWorld! No bathtub bowls, no aggression just pure poetry. Thank you for sharing 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬❤❤❤
Awesome Dylan! Thanks for sharing and capturing the moment. Glad to hear you're travelling here in NZ with your family hope you have a great time!!
Thank you for being there at the right moment and for capturing the most beautiful video I've ever seen.
This is amazing just amazing. Fantastic footage Dylan Brayshaw thank you for capturing this astonishing moment.
What a magical moment! Saw the shorter version before this and thanls so much for sharing! ^^ Not every day we see something like this!
Dylan Brayshaw thank u so much for showing how wonderful they can be.
What incredible footage! Glad I happened upon your extra footage video, thanks for sharing!! :D
Hah bro. It one of the most wild videos ever taken. She's a brave, beautiful soul. And so are orcas :))
she most likely swims with them often as the mom was playing with her feet.
I feel it was a mother with juveniles, not a male. What a great capture. That swimmer had an experience of her lifetime - amazing. X
Thanks. Great footage . And presence of mind - you caught this great interaction on record.
Amazing encounter. The swimmer has had the experience of a lifetime. And you were so fortunate to have been able to document it.
It's absolutely amazing - well done for the footage- fab! x
That was one of the most exciting & beautiful nature films I've ever seen. Thank you for thinking of sending the drone. Wow. Incredible, just incredible !! JBC - New York USA
Great work Dylan! Love this video
AMAZING!! Mahalo for sharing this incredible moment!!
Thanks for posting. Loved seeing the awesome video.
To see something like this with all the nonsense going on in the world is just amazing. Thanks for sharing this.
and you wrote that a year ago? looking back, was it still "nonsense" back then? lol
Thank you. You have made my day! Just absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful video, great job and thanks for sharing with us
So brave. Keep calm and enjoy the moment!
That is really amazing and she didn't panic when they come up to her. Thanks for the footage.
Thank you for sharing that beautiful encounter😊
Made my Friday. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your footage! I am a photographer and I am 'hooked' on orca's. Keep well and wishing you a good life with your baby.
Your video captured a beautiful interaction. Thanks!
so glad you shared, what a wonderous moment !
I've had the rare pleasure of having Orca encounters twice while SCUBA diving. They seem to be genuinely curious and enjoy interacting with humans. There is a video on YT about the Orcas alerting New Zealand whalers by splashing their tails on the surface when baleen whales were in the area, and would guide the whalers to their prey. It seems that the Aboriginal people of the area began the practice before Europeans arrived. Thank you Dylan for this rare glimpse. You were very fortunate to be there at that particular time.
Actually, that's "Killers in Eden", about the New South Wales whaling community of Eden on Twofold Bay, where the orca actually swam up to the village to alert the whalers, and the humans in whaling rowboats hunted migrating baleen whales together. The deal was that the whalers left the carcass anchored off the village for a while, while the orca ate the lips and tongue, before the whale was hauled and and processed by the humans. It seems that the local aboriginals had had a similar arrangement with the orca, possibly for thousands of years, but it had a sad ending in the 1920's when a white resident hurt the main orca communicator "Tom", and the pod was probably killed off elsewhere. The orca of Eden are said to have rescued whalers whose boats were destroyed during hunts. There is a killer whale museum in Eden.
Dylan, I don't usually do the touchy feely stuff, but this is footage that's amazingly gorgeous, and talk about precious? Sir, you've captured something that I don't think has ever been captured... Nice doesn't come close to how magnificent this is. Those creatures could've taken the swimmer literally apart in seconds... Instead they played with the person... Nice, nice, nice...
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing
Well done mate! Awesome footage!!👍👍
I think mama orca is telling the swimmer to get out of the water because there is a storm coming,,,awesome video...thanks.
I would say that's a definite possibility.
Love your video, thank you for sharing!
No problem
I love this video, I think I am watching it for fourth time and still very excited to see it till the end.

Absolutely Amazing!!!
I love Orcas and Dolphins . The sounds they make are very soothing. And they’re so beautiful.
OH WOW!! What an experience!!! I'd love to have something like that happen to me!! Amazing how close to shore they are. Perfect "in the right place at the right time" video!! 💖
This has got to be the best footage ever. Super cool. I wish u got an interview with her. That male was super curious or just wanted to play with her. I've never seen one up close but its on my bucket list. They are so majestical. So great to see them in the wild where they are spose to be with their families. Merry Christmas to you and your family and tfs. Hugs from Minneapolis.Minnesota
wow no words can capture this videos footage thank you
Thanks for the explanation!
The larger is mom baby and another juvenile. They are always such curious, inquisitive, intelligent animals. Just recently Scott Eastwood had an encounter off of Baja, CA. While paddleboarding. I had an encounter in Santa Barbara about 4 yrs ago with a mom and baby while paddleboarding with a group of 3 friends. We ended up stopping and sitting on our boards. The mom would come up and touch our feet with her mouth, more of a nudge. Then let the baby up from below her to explore us. They stayed for 20-30 mins. Then just swam away. Honestly, the most amazing experience of my life. When ppl. Refer to them as "Killer Whales" it really offends me because they are gentle and playful at heart. The silly ones in the Whale Family.
These apex predators are killers. They will track a baby whale FOR HOURS pushing it under water to tire it out and separate it from its mother. They kill seals, sharks, and other manner of sea life. Why these close encounters with humans without a kill is anybody's guess.
@@sassiebrat And Vice Versa. The circle of life.
We don't have to guess, there are no known attacks on humans, at least in the wild(reported). They are smart enough to know what is prey and what is not. They will be aggressive if humans are bothering them and will let them know when they have had enough by pushing, nudging or tail slapping. I think they know they are the kings of the ocean.
@@vsnutz...re-read my post! Why these close encounters with humans without a kill is anybody's guess; "without a kill" is the operative phrase!
The problem with killer whales and dolphins is that they are extremely intelligent so you never know if you are gonna get the classic "gentle" one or a pure bully that may think it's funny to kill you... they have much more in common with humans than sharks on that point wich is why you can have techniques that allow you to swim with shark and prevent attacks, their personality matters less than with more intelligent animals. But yeah I think getting to swim with killer whales must be like meeting with aliens. Truly an incredible experience
Thank you for catching this footage you shared something so beautiful that woman is so. Awsome is all I can say ❤❤❤❤this is my most favorite video of all time
Amazing footage
Thank you for getting this footage. It helps people see what beautiful curious, smart, beings we share this earth with. They should never be put in a fish tank and be made to do tricks while we eat popcorn and clap. God bless.
Great footage!! I'm also a Mavic user and I have to say, they are such an awesome drone. Hopefully this story will also alleviate the often fanatical views some people have about drones.
Great video. I spent a lot of time on the water between the 70s and the 90s. The local pod where I live are fish eaters, and they would often come right up to the boat, and sometimes put on a show for us. They would sometimes broach close enough to the boat that we felt they were playing with us. They seemed friendly enough, but I never got the urge to jump in the water and swim with them. They are absolutely beautiful creatures. Bob
So cool love that you have the story behind it
Incredible videos. Somewhat frightening, Congratulations.
Great! Thnaks for sharing !
Those footages are supper cool.
Thank you for the background on the video. I. Would love to hear her talk about the experience.
This is amazing footage sir ! I would bet just about anything that you will be receiving inquiries about using this video from all sorts of angles ... Hopefully you make a quick dollar or two also mate... Awsome stuff man !
Gracias excelente video 🤙🏻
Absolutely brilliant Dylan. May be right place right time but you have to put yourself in those positions. Congrats
Amazing viedo, love the story.
Thank you for such remarkable footage. To capture this is truly a treat for all to see. Looks like the whale was trying to show the woman back to shore .... he/she nudged at her, like trying to steer her to shallow water looks like to me. Truly amazing to see. God is wonderous!!!
Like I am sure it's been said before - that's not a male orca - it's a mom with 2 generations of calves - one older than the other. Amazing footage, and so lucky to be in there at that moment!! Orcas are SO intelligent!

people are foolish, animals are wise.
@cristina Banuelos I don't think that was what he was trying to say, I think he was agreeing with you.
The video was beautiful bro
Oh wow what a amazing and wonderful experience
Wow, that lady has some balls, you know what I mean🙄 truly an amazing video, hard to believe! Gorgeous animals, hard to believe anyone harming these whales!
Oh that doesn't take balls. Maybe the cold.water. but Orcas aren't mindless killers like sharks. Unless people lock them in tanks and drive them crazy
It would be great to have her narrate your video with what she was doing and thinking. Thanks for the great footage!
Good idea, I’ll get something organized with Judie
Love it. Thanks for sharing. I see you referred to the larger orca as male. I suspect it really was mom with her babies.
Micco Mann yes you are right my mistake thanks
@@DylanBrayshaw Hey, anything that big, you think male of the species. :) No problem. By filming it, you gave the world a big present re orcas, that they are not killers by their nature of things like us.
