Most big fashion and jewelry design houses didn’t start out as big multinational affairs. In fact, almost all of them began through a special combination of skills and endurance. This is the Cartier story.

  • This was such a great and informative video. What were Louis and Cocteau's relation to eachother that he was so inspired to take his suggestion on realizing the trinity ring?

    • There has been a personal connection and also an economical advantage between Cartier and Cocteau on the base of artistic appreciation of both to one another. As a surrealist artist Cocteau inspired Cartier and spread the company‘s attention with the his fame and art. For his movie „Beauty and the beast“ he used Cartier‘s Diamonds for the scene, Bella‘s tears are transformed into precious stones. So Cocteau also was connected to a lavish brand that seemed to have no borders. When Cocteau became a member of the Legion of Honor, he designed a sword with a handle in the shape of Orpheus. It was made by Cartier from precious materials with a breathtaking craftsmanship. Last but not least: Cocteau and Jean Marais (the actor who played the beast in his movie) were a couple for two and a half decades and stayed afterwards friends. There are different versions of the legend of the Trinity Ring. Some people say Cocteau designed the ring for his lover and Cartier made it for him, others say Cocteau gave just the order and liked the idea that was designed by Cartier. Francesca Cartier Brickel has a different legend to offer in her book about her famous ancestors,“The Cartiers“: Cocteau’s lover, the young novelist Raymond Radiguet has died of tuberculosis. After a legend Cocteau had a dream, maybe under the influence of opium, he was addicted to, of the rings of Saturn. He was triggered to the idea of something huge and universal on his pinky finger. Some people also believe, that Cocteau designed the ring for Radiguet shortly before his death in 1923 and had been intended as a love gift that was produced too late. So Cocteau wore two of them as a memory for himself and Radiguet. Nevertheless the design developed from an individual commission to a signature piece after members of the elite in Paris, international aristocracy and socialites coveted this piece of luxury, romantic expression and sophistication very soon. The idea of three intertwined rings had it’s origins in the celtic culture, but Cocteau made it a world wide success. It also became a tiny identifying code of homosexual men in times when revealing this part of an identity could be much more dangerous than today. For me it’s a brilliant combination of a signature product that it is connected to a Company and a piece of jewelry that can have a spiritual and emotional meaning, everybody can define individually a combination of three important qualities to it. Whether it is original Love, friendship and fidelity, or the three Cartier brothers, preconscious, conscious and subconscious, (the levels through which surrealist artists travel more intentionally than others) the third wedding anniversary, the birth of a third child or countless other feelings that are associated with it. With it’s simplicity, ignoring borders of combining different gold alloys, the elegantly playful haptic of rolling the interlocking rings on the finger and it’s subtle recognition factor makes it to one of the most ingenious designs in jewelry of the 20th century.

  • So if right now someone buys Cartier jewelry it's got no connection to the original designer whatsoever but people who buy the brand make it seem like it does where in addition Cartier brand has no innovative distinction from any other fine jewelry brand. Because how would you distinguish a Cartier piece from another fine jewelry piece? Because it had more amount of stones? No innovation or creativity that is above and beyond other fine jewelry whatsoever. The family that made the jewelry is long gone. None of the original creators will niether making or even signing any of the Cartier pieces. None of it is also original handcrafted. Having said that when a good jewelry artist right now is talented and is capable of making kick butt innovative design pieces that don't look like something out of an ordinary jewelry store people look the other way even if the pieces are not just signed but entirely made first hand by that artist. Shame on all that.
