My mother passed down my grandfather’s 1952 Longines to me last year for my 40th birthday… My grandmother gifted it to him on their engagement, Christmas 1952 and had it engraved. Small, rectangular, gold filled… I had it serviced and it’s perfect for me to fit that vintage dress niche. It even has his cigarette residue on the dial! RIP Pop Pop!
You just made me feel good. Many years ago i paid $600 for 3 Omega dress watches, including a tiny ladies automatic from the 60s, a ladies round quartz from the 80s and a Tank homage quartz in blingy gold plate. I kept the Omega Tank for myself and love wearing it from time to time, always makes me smile. So yes, would love a real deal Tank but my cheapo Omega would sit well in your video today. Nice job Tom.
"Must" actually refers to the English word, as in: "Oh its a must" meaning something you absolutely must get. This expression is used in French.
Perfectly said, you even nailed the accent 😄👍
The Dolce Vita from Longines (mentioned in the video) is a great alternative to the Tank. While not as prestigious, Longines makes some beautiful watches at great prices.
I used to own a Longines Dolce Vita as an alternative to a Cartier Tank. The reason I dismissed the Tank at my AD at first was my conclusion that the dial was so ordinary for the asking price. The Dolce Vita offered more, especially with the guilloche dial for much less. Turns out that months later I sold the Dolce Vita and purchased a Tank. Why? The Tank, although plain looking, had the right dimensions and complemented my fashion sense. I’ve had it eight months now and have never looked back.
When I thought I knew just about all the Tank models, you introduce me to a bunch of rare variants!
Cool episode. Appreciated the shout for Seiko, some neo-vintage tanks can be insane value! Surprised you did not mention Hamilton!
I got the seiko tank and I'm so happy. now I'm not sure if I ever wanted an actual cartier tank 🫢 I probably still do, twenty years from now lol. seiko has so many varieties of tank in the name of exeline line. I got the seiko SWR054 although I was looking for SUP250 but it seems obsolete! solar movement is hard to find (for seiko) but I'm still happy with my quartz 😄
OUTSTANDING video explains the GOD Tier of ALL watches - TYVM. I have the Tank XL, Santos Carree #2960, and Ballon. I wear my Tank on a regular basis, sometimes as a daily wear.
I love that red, green, blu combo. That would be funky
Tank Louis for the win !
I have a problem alternating a small watch like the tank with for instance my Zenith Chronomadter Revival. Like you said it’s difficult to get used to bigger watches. And it’s a pity because I love the El primero!
It's worth noting that if you want to purchase a Cartier Tank Must AND you want a mechanical movement, you can go with the WSTA0040 specifically the XL version, which not only is significantly more affordable than the Tank Louis Cartier, but also adds a date complication at 6 o'clock 😃 I own one, and I absolutely love it 👍 so much so that I made a whole video on it!
Imo a seconds hand and a date have no business on a Tank…and I am not gonna talk about the absolutely exaggerated case size🥴
Buying a Must is like buying a 1995 Mercedes just to say you own a Mercedes.
@@bax4562 Well, it is one of the most important products that the maison ever made and was a breath of fresh air for Cartier in the late 70s. That fresh breeze lives on until today and I happly keep a couple Vermeils in my collection along with a Tank Extra Plate, so there you go;)
I have a vintage (circa 2000) square atlas watch from Tiffany & Co. Nice alternative to the tank and a little different
Excellent video. Going to look into the Cartier Tank Must Solarbeat Large
Recently added a vintage Must de Cartier vermeil with a hand wound movement to my collection. Gorgeous watch.
Where did you get your perla strap? Yours would be perfect for my tank. Thank you!
I love my NOMOS Tetra (Gangreserve), which I see as a modern alternative to the Cartier Tank.
The Baume Hampton the 90's is very cool design
Great video - wish you spent 45 mins on it. One of my favorite watch topics to learn on Be well!
For those who like the vintage cintrée (and the re-edition), there is a sleeper in the tank americaine family, the ref 1720 (medium size, quartz). Both bring a similar feeling on the wrist thanks to the dimensions (23x45x6 mm for the cintrée, 23x41x6 for the americaine) and to the curvature of the caseback, which unfortunately disappeared with the following references of the medium size quartz. I even wonder if the similarity to the cintrée is the reason why this size was not re-introduced in the current americaine collection
You mentioned the Santos but shoutout to the Santos Dumont in particular as it's on the leather bracelet, making it a bit more analogous to the stereotypical Tanks. It's my personal 'square grail' (yes I'm allowed to make up arbitrary categories for grails to justify getting them all)
Recently in Vegas I was able to try on about 5 versions of the Tank. I ended up buying the Reverso Duoface. So IMO the Reverso is the most serious competitor of the Tank. For me, it came down to the perceived greater versatility of the Reverso. I essentially got two watches which I use as a dual time when traveling. While I don’t buy into the “story” that the Reverso is a “sport watch”, it does go further for me towards that sport spectrum than the Tank. Finally, the horological history of JLC made it irresistible.
100%. Reverso Duo was on my short list vs Tank, tried on at AD n loved it. Hesitated, then the excessive JLC price bumps. Now on hold till can find better deal used. That Duo, in so many different faces, is a stunner. Good on you.
I always wanted to have Cartier Tank, but Is it worth it to get tank must now? I mean now they use faux leather strap, and im not paying that amount of money if it’s not genuine leather 😅✌️
What is the largest vintage size cartier made? 35x37?When did they stop doing the vermeil silver cases?
Where can I find this perlon strap you showed?
As a watch collectionner that have a Tank and a Santos, old ones, I could witness that small watches could make a big effect. Size does matter for elegant watches.
I just ordered this watch from Exquisite Timepieces! I'm so excited to get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My darling husband gave me a lovely 1960s square gold watch with a brown lizard strap that I wear similar to a tank. It’s by Germinal Voltaire, a Swiss company that was in business from the 1800s to the 1960s. This was one of their last pieces. Every time I wear it people comment on my watch. It isn’t my most expensive watch but it is definitely the most commented on.
I’m in love with the Coco! I mean the Tank Asymmetrique! ❤😂
Can you post a link to the summer band you showed please?
I love my Tank Must with the burgundy dial.
Hi , I have scratched the itch for Cartier Tank with an Omega Deville Pave D'or 26x31mm mechanical , Roamer Standard and Jaquet Droz Tank beautiful watches and still more cheaper than a Cartier Must all combined .
One Tank is never enough in my book so I have a Louis, a Divan, an Americaine, a MC, a Francais and a Solarbeat. I wish I bought a Basculante before the prices shot off skywards but perhaps one day.
My favourite (as best fit on my wrists) was the tank MC but recently I tried the classical tank with the bracelet and looked better (I think we have a sinner). But my first choice for this type of case is JLC duo face. Another personal favourite is the GP.
Tank vs. Reverso is always a tough question. I’m Team Tank…for now
@@Chrono24Official your AP is very interesting also option
Great video 👍👍
Casio just released a tank watch. Looks good too.
The coolest tank shape is undoubtedly the Cartier Tank Americaine Chronoflex. My favourite iteration is yellow gold on a brown alligator strap. But honestly they are as beautiful. Competition yeah it’s the JLC Reverso very very refined elegant watch.
I owned a Reverso TT1931 in the boutique only Rouge dial color for close to 10 years. But o never wore it and so I sold it. I now have a limited production Tank Louis with the Mosiac dial, which is perfect on my 7 inch wrist and which my wife is trying to “borrow” all the time
That mosaic dial is so so good
The Tank Louis is the best Cartier, and stiffest competition is the Reverso. One of them will be my next watch, in rose gold. I had a steel Reverso, but had to sell it due to poor fit. Lovers of rectangular watches be warned, be very careful with fit. It’s not as easy as a round watch.
Rolex Cellini square full gold is also a good option. Also quite rare.
Good stuff.
Instead of the 3k Cartier I choose the 125$ bolava frank loyd wright tank it’s a comparable option on the wrist.
I’m currently wearing a silver tank, blue numerals. It’s a must de Cartier, but way better than the plated ones
4:07 Anyone know where that particular Perlon strap is from?
That one is from Clockwork Synergy. They're one of the only brands to offer gold(plated) buckles, but the colors online don't exactly match what comes in the mail.
Dubey & Schaldenbrand aerodyne duo…makes the Cartier tank look like a fast fashion watch… 9:26
I bought a tank watch from a brand named royal london and I personally really like it
As soon as he said you shouldn't care about older Must de Cartier my mind went blank and I stopped listening. Mine is one of the first ones and the vermeil looks impeccable so I don't get it.
I love the Tank Chinoise, unfortunately quite expensive
They exist in vermeil and this is perfection
Why Tank Louis? It's a "Louis Cartier" Tank or a Tank LC.
Where do I get such a strap? How do you call it?
Perlon straps - you can find them online in a range of colors
Good info Thomas. Thanks
Longines Dolce for me! Prettier, cheaper and in my mind just a prestigious. Look, Bogey wore one and wouldn’t be caught dead in a Cartier! Enough said.
Discontinued Tank Solo XL w/date on bracelet, in my rotation. Classic, love it.
Excellent video, even though the part about Marilyn Monroe was very disturbing. Editing was excellent.
I will be sticking to my day job 😅
The best tank is the JLC Reverso Tribute.
I purchased a preloved tank basculante for less than USD2k 3 years ago, it is a quartz. Does anyone know what is its value today? Thank you.
Piaget Emperador is interEsting
Tank Cintrée
This man is the love child of Jack Forster and Stephen Pulverent.
Nothing beats the original size 23*30 Tank Louis Cartier in a non-waterproof case
A classic for a reason
Not mentioned is the Tank Americaine which is what I've got. Only downside is that the crown is small and difficult to wind. I suspect that's due to the Cartier quartz designs that of course don't need a winding crown. Also for other square watches Nomos is a good alternative.
Absolutely. Cartier crowns look great but can be tricky to operate. And agreed, the NOMOS Tetra is a worthy alternative.
Good to see Lord Baelish get into the watch industry after being executed by the Starks.
That was a Bahraini stamp not Omani
Audemars Piguet Edward Piguet ✨
It ain't tank if it's not Cartier 🕺
It's not an Omani stamp, it's a Bahrain coat of arms.
Ha, ha...good one with Marilyn Monroe there😆
ah yes, Mike nouveau of the Cartier mafia.
I m getting a solid gold longine watch from 1940 watch for my 27 birthday
The basculant has gone insane. I had to oppertunity to buy one at 2300 usd in 2022... 😢
So bittersweet when hidden gems become unhidden
Please Recruit “Andrew Morgan”
5 things? I always thought there were only 4 🙄
You’re an English speaker. Why are you saying “moost” instead of “must” ? Even the French say “ must”.
Mate, but your collar 🤨
Camp collars! Check ‘em out!
Had the Basculante. Sold it. Regretted it. Then found the exact one I sold on eBay. Back in my possession.
No way did u buy it last week from Japan
@@therahgalleryart no. Florida.
@@Khanh.Nguyen369 haha I just missed the one on eBay last week
@@therahgalleryart I have access to a couple if you’re still looking.
Great Video, interesting topic. Only downside is that you really rushed through the whole Video. Take your time, a 1-2 sec Pause between the sentences is Not a bad thing.
يا جماعة هذا راسه اكبر من جسمه او نظري ظعيف
Lose the cutaways. They're not funny. They never are. They're just lame.
Artistic advice from a Marvel fan? Hahaha
That Tank looks way too small on Muhammad Ali.
his face looks like photoshop, head is bigger than his body 😅
Once you own a Cartier why would you want any other brands? There are many more expensive or cheaper watches than Cartier, but Cartier designs are the best!
Tank MC
