I like to mix this in-between shadow boxing or pushups. It really helps you build punching speed but also improves reflexs, eyesight, etc.

I'm just gnna say this. Punching speed is god given. Natural. You can do things to Capitalize your technique but you basically have the speed you've always had just learning to throw it better
But are you training speed or just learning the position of a dropping weight, like a juggler?

Would you recommend using a 4 pound (~2 kg) ball instead of a dumbbell? The benefit of that is I think that it trains your grip strength, and if that falls on your foot, you're less likely to break it (especially if you're doing it above your bed). What do you think?

Have the dumbbel above your bed. That's the safest option I could think of. (Unless your bed is on the floor or is a bunk bed :D )

Ive been doing shadow boxing for around 4+ years and this is one of my favorite routines.. one day i just picked up a pair of 5lb dumbells and started throwing punches and thought it was a good workout and stuck with it now im using 20lbs and able to do hooks and uppercuts with them. I dont think ill ever fight in the ring but i def know i can beat 80-85% of dudes in the street if need be (also train muay thai and jiu-jitsu)

@Youngin70 yeah Ive actually been training muay Thai and BJJ for about 3.5 years. Sparring is the best part of training at least to me for the person I'm sparring probably not😅

just train everyday and punch with speed as your intention... until you can't. just let your footwork and body rotation produce power. worry about other things later.
Yeah working on the jab is one of the most important parts. A lot to focus on, fundamentals are always first.

For building explosive speed in your arms, would these drills work? Clapping behind your back pushups, clapping pullups, and just the sprinter drill where you move your arms fast, while seated.
How can this translate the real punching power?
Shoulder burn out is the reason to do this. And I guess speed. If you get too slow the weight falls.
I rather do shadow boxing with 5lb dumbels for like 5mins. Good warmup too.
