How we reinstate the CHATEAU Potager GARDEN, using DIG and NO DIG - Journey to the Château, Ep. 90

In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart use their new tiller to take the first steps to reinstate the chateau vegetable garden (potager). They will be planting vegetables using both "dig" and "no dig" methods. Stuart also begins making the sponge cakes for the upcoming coronation party that is being hosted by friends Tony and Jane @notquiteachateaudiy .
Here is the cake recipe that Stuart uses for the coronation cakes:
---------------------
Sponge cake recipe:
225 g (8 oz) softened butter
225 g (8 oz) castor (granulated) sugar
275 g (10 oz) flour 2 teaspoons baking powder
4 large eggs
4 tablespoons milk
1. Preheat oven to 180°C or 160°C fan. Grease a 30 x 23 cm (12 x 9 in.) traybake or roasting tin. Line the base with baking parchment.
2. Measure all the ingredients into a large bowl and beat until blended. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level.
3. Bake in the pre-heated oven for around 35-40 minutes or until the cake has shrunk from the sides of the tin and springs back to touch. Leave to cool in tin and then turn onto a cooling rack.
--------------------
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

  • Gentlemen... you had me inspired and exhausted at the same time... but always watching with a smile on my face. I said to myself as your new garden footage was rolling "I would probably injure myself doing that" and then Patrick shared is "combat wounds"... again with such a smile and purpose... impressive, and real. Stuart... you made me want to bake something and the lesson about French flour was informative... neat. I know there is never enough time in the day... but Gents, you are making the rest of us look like slackers! I gladly cheer you on... and your jobs well done. Keep up the good work... and as always, thanks for sharing.

  • It may sound crazy, but the no-dig method seems to be the best for the soil and life in it. Building upon the compacted soil with new plant life will rejuvenate it. My garden is now 8 years old and fabulous without me digging one spade. Much smaller garden, a townhouse instead of a chateau but abundant flora and fauna. Have a lovely time this weekend.

  • With all the physical work you do, carpal tunnel is almost a given. Repetitive motion is horrid , but when you like to create things , we suffer , so you deal with injuries , same way I always did..laugh and persevere ! My favorite expression at night was...I think my ass is broken. My husband and family thought that was hilarious. I think people who are ridiculously busy everyday are too worn out at night to ever experience Insomnia ! Have fun !

Your sponges look so professional and cooked to perfection. You and Patrick made such a good job at getting all those vegetables in the ground too. I have used the cardboard trick years ago and it was such a success I would recommend it to anyone. Patrick, I hope you helped your quiche making marathon by using ready made pastry, or are you a purist and have to make it yourself? Loved the video! 👏🥰

I'am a positive person and laugh every day...I'am only crumpy when I'am really ill. A collegue of mine had carpaal tunnelsyndroom and he told me it could be really painful. Even after an operation he still had some pain now and then. Stuart the music when you were digging sounded like a soundtrack of one of the films of Batman written by Hans Zimmer. Seeing Stuart preparing the cakes made my stomach rumble😅😅 Tomorrow a will be watching the Coronation. Have fun with your friends tomorrow. Hugs 🥰😘⚘️

  • Hi Patrick & Stuart, Patrick I know how painful Carpel tunnel is, last November I was in excruciating pain,my whole hand & fingers were swollen & could do anything without being in the worse pain I’ve ever experienced 😭 I had a Ultra Sound to comfort my Drs diagnosis! I was told I need an operation,while waiting for a appointment,I had two steroid injections, one in the trapped nerve,one in the bone on the top of my hand 😮it was horrendous😫 I also was having physio My dr said I still have to have an operation! I can tell you Patrick,it’s now May i haven’t had an operation,because the injection are still working & the numbness in my thumb has gone! Patrick you have so much to do in the chateau & garden, it’s worth having the steroid injection, to not be in pain ! Once again have a fabulous party Celebrating 🤴 Charles Coronation! 🎉 PS.Can you please show us the finished cake 🎂 Stuart ! 🥰🥂🍾🎉💕

  • Dear Patrick and Stuart, I love your laughter and the fun you both have despite having so much to do. A long time ago I attempted to use a tiller just like yours, it didn’t go too well. I nearly broke my neck and sprained every muscle in my body! They are great machines but I think you need muscles and strength to operate one. Patrick, I’m not sure if that was the best machine for your carpel tunnel!! Stuart, those cakes look beautiful already and I’m sure Patrick, your quiches will be delicious!! Have a wonderful time tomorrow. It begins around 5-5:30AM here on the East coast of the US. I’m going to try to catch some of it and then off to my 9 year old and 4 year old grandsons baseball games!!! I’ll find the coverage rerun of it on KZhead Tomorrow night. Anyway, always remain happy and many hugs!!! 💕😘

I suggest you add more dirt and slow release fertilizers as they need a lot of fertilization to get hold. Water a lot at first as the cardboard steals the moisture at first. Tomatoes love to get dirt high up on the stem so pile it on. Good luck

  • Patrick, next time you go to a bocante or cheap shop see if you can find some sort of shopping trolley to use to move your gardening plants and equip around. Otherwise you are going to need a chiropractor for your back. You can use the nifty machine to mix chicken manure and blood and bone into the soils to enrich it as it has been grass for a long time …ideas for thought to make life a little easier ( I love your machine - i want one too!) vicki

    @MsSherrydarling@MsSherrydarling11 ай бұрын
  • Good morning Stuart & Patrick, so much fun starting a potager. It is essential nowadays to have something growing for the kitchen table. Why have you not used the flat attachment to the tractor. You just open a good shallow pathway to get rid of the grass, then you could have tilled. The cardboard is fine, good that you started planting the veggies straight away. As all that settles, the stuff can grow. Hopefully the area is fenced off, can't remember, as those nosey terriers will come and see what is happening. The Iris is so beautiful. That is a specimen I would grow in a hot house so as not to loose the rhizome, but is quite protected and I am sure it will multiply at it's own pace. It always is a challenge for your baking to be successful especially when it is going to be on show. There is nothing more delicious than a good quiche!! I am sure the coronation party will be absolute lovely, all the great treats and toasting and good company. It seems you are going to be quite busy, but that is fine, it is good for us to have many challenges in life, it makes us feel great at the end of the day knowing we have managed and done well. Many blessings for each day, be happy and grateful, what more do we need. Do take care, be alert it was a lovely video, had plenty of chuckles along the way. Kind regards, Elize.

    • Hi Elize. We had mentioned that we currently don't have our tractor and we have no idea when it will be repaired and returned. We did need to start the potager now, so we could not wait for the return of the tractor to help us. The dogs are not in the area of the veggie garden, so no worries. • You may like to plant potatoes in a section. They will toil the soil in the growing without you noticing. They keep the soil fertile. You can cut the potatoes eyes when you peel them with a knife. bury them with the roots down and you will have potatoes in no time. They will grow, bloom purple flowers, and after they die away you can pick them. Keep the tiny- little potatoes int he ground and they will grow for you. You will never need to buy potatoes.

  • First you must put the mower as close to the ground to get rid of the the grass. You also will need to till over and over. Your no dig needs a lot more soil. I love Janes no dig because it’s off the ground waist high which makes it easier for disabled people to garden. Her garden is always planted perfectly for them to eat from but not overwhelming amounts that you have to canned.

    • You may have missed that we don't have our mower right now. Patrick mentioned how the mower deck is broken. We did also mention that we are putting more new soil in the potager, and the video was just from the initial creation of the garden. Jane has had her raised beds for years, and we just started from years of neglect. We also will have a B&B, and dinner parties in the chateau, so we will need much more than just for the two of us. Thanks.

I tried it in large pots and plastic totes on patio chairs last year and it worked great! Just started layering the beds with wire mesh on the bottom, followed by the cardboard and then the rest. Your 2 beds are wonderful and what a great start & experiment! You are so right to pace yourselves. My goodness! I don’t know how you get done, what you get done, daily! Kind regards from Wyoming. • If you want to feel better about all those eggs, then take this on board, the human body can NOT absorb the cholesterol in the egg. So eat as many eggs as you like. They used to think that just because eggs were full of cholesterol that meant they were bad for us, but luckily the science has since proven that fact wrong, yay!! I love eggs!! My husband has now put in an order for a rotavator after seeing yours, thanks :) good luck with the potager. There is nothing like fresh vegies straight from the garden. We can not get our daughter to eat her peas any other way!! A right princess it seems.

  • Hey Patrick & Stewart🫶. I’m all in for the no dig process. You actually don’t need to dig the grass up. Just mow it and lay the cardboard over, making sure to leave no gaps. I was told by a friend in the UK whom is a horticulturalist! That not to use soil on top of the cardboard but use compost. Hope you are both well. And yes! Chateau work waits for no one😆💕

    @jamesmcneill2202@jamesmcneill220211 ай бұрын

  • I love how you always manage to laugh while you're working. What are you, the tag team for injuries, taking turns on the Disabled List? Take care Patrick and Stuart. While Stuart was making his Victoria Sponge Cakes, I noticed a Carrefour container on the counter which brought back memories... I worked for Carrefour during the five years that the company operated in Philadelphia. However, Carrefour failed in their attempt to enter into the USA marketplace. But, I digress. I hope you have a smashing good time at the coronation party! Much success in completing the gîte in time for your guests.

  • So I assume the T45 flour is what we call cake flour. I'm dying to get my hands on some of the White Lilly brand flour southern US cooks rave about. It's no longer a terribly high priority since I don't eat carbs these days. I love making scones, but can't resist eating them. 😛🚫🚫🚫😄 I'm sorry you gentlemen didn't have time to prepare your garden last fall. The Dowling No-dig method is impressive. I once put in a huge flower garden from an area of lawn turf by laying out big sheets of cardboard to smother the grass in fall, by spring the soil was perfect. It's windy here, so I needed lots of rocks to keep my cardboard in place through the winter. Your Iris are anemic. For 2x bigger flowers scratch this recipe into the soil around the corms after bloom season is over. Flower Fertilizer Recipe 4 lbs cottonseed meal 3 lbs superphosphate 1 lb blood meal 1lb balanced fertilizer (such as 15-15-15 for shrubs). Don't worry if you can't obtain all the ingredients. The blood meal and bone meal alone will improve the size, color, height and texture of your Iris. My mom was an Iris fanatic. A little of her knowledge rubbed off on me.

  • Patrick and Stuart, you both are doing amazing. Stuart, those cakes already look delicious. I think it is great you are doing both dig and no dig. I think you may like the no dig best, but you both will be able to determine which method works the best for the outcome. I am thinking less weeds with no dig. I am not promoting a channel but Sarah Backmo in sweeden has has great success with no dig. I don't garden anymore myself but do have a fair amount of experience. Either way, I think you will do well and be success. It is worth the try and at least you both had a good laugh. Those tillers are not easy to use, I know. I wonder if it made your carpel tunnel act up? Also, all of that sewing likely added to the carpel tunnel. I have carpel tunnel also. It is not as bad as it used to be though. Maybe it is because I have so many more health issues. Patrick when you were talking about your knives and showed your brace, I cringed. You almost scared the bejesus outta me thinking you cut yourself. I hope this problem eases soon for you. You both got alot on your agenda at the moment. I know those quiches will be delicious. I hope you film some, as Jane said she won't be doing much filming. I also really hope all goes well for you all and I know you all will be very busy and enjoy yourselves. Gardening is one of the vastest areas to (literally) dig into, and your approach to just go ahead and get cracking to not waste time or plants makes sense. Gardening once you start will always be a never ending journey of experiments, analysis and improvements, but plants can't wait around, they need to be tucked in beds and you simply take it from there.
