    • nah, he's perfectly qualified and he's demonstrating it with subtlety. i'm not a john mayer fanboy, but i do believe one of john mayer's best traits as a musician is that he's a guitar maestro who doesn't feel the need to steal the shine from a composition (sometimes to a fault, as that's what a lot of nerds want to see). he typically chooses clean lines and tasteful flourishes over crowbarring showy playing that's clearly out of place

The difficulty is mainly why it sounds off, but to say John is overqualified for this like the original comment said, when he's pitchy is just bullshit. Also, why put a performance on at this level, in front of this many people, and not rehearse harmony lines (if they did indeed not practice beforehand).

  • The best thing about John is he’s the ultimate vibe. Sometimes less is more and John knows this. He knows the perfect time and place to settle into a song with his guitar. Not to mention he knows when to just shred. He’s one of the most talented guitar players of the last 20 years

  • If I remember right, Ed sheeran has a tenor voice type and john mayer has a baritone voice. Plus their timbre and tone is quite different. Hence why their harmonies don't sound as good as some may expect. Much respect to these amazing musicians!

  • I was there for this. Right before playing this song, John played "Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey" and casually stated "This is for you, Ed." We had no idea that he was referring to ED FREAKING SHEERAN who was about to come up on stage to play a couple songs. What a delightful surprise!

  • By the bass note on 3:55 , I think that they should've come back in "people fall in love in mysterious ways"... But Mr. Sheeran went to the chorus. Thank God it is a great band, amazing musicians, and they could follow the lead.

    • On the recorded version, Ed comes in after the guitar solo with "So baby now, take me into your loving arms" as he did here. For some reason they weren't on the same page. You're right though, great band.

  • I play music full-time for a living as a solo LoopingArtist, I never wanted to do any of Ed’s songs because they’re always so simple, 3 chord songs, etc. But sitting here, stoned, watching this, feeling the groove, I’m definitely surprised how good this song is. Or maybe it’s because it’s John and his band backing Ed up. Either way, this is probably the best guitar solo I’ve ever heard John play! Jesus, this is pretty amazing.

  • That was April 10, 2019 in Budokan. We had big snow in Tokyo but totally worth the trip because the 3-hour-show was just amazing. We were so lucky to see Ed Sheehan who was staying in Tokyo for his own live in the same week.

    • @@nblackmore he didn't play the lick, it was one of the other guitarists but his reaction was because it sounded sweet, it's an r + b staple and comes from another song which I can't recall, hopefully someone can remind me. Pretty much John going -'I understood that reference! '
