Imagine making a cover of a song more popular than the original, and completely worth it by the way. Mr. Pettys version, which just about anybody with the slimmest of links to music and pop culture is more than likely familiar with, on the other hand, made it to #1 in 1989, So, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. It's December 15, 2021, Kolkata, India, 5:48 a.m. It's been almost 6 years since this song introduced me to John Mayer's music and my whole career on guitar studies changed once and for all. Tired after doing my engineering assignments for the entire night I decided to take a break and suddenly this song popped up in my head and as I came to check it out for almost the 1000th time, the nostalgia hit me like a running truck. The tears I shed through this man's music, the healing this man caused me incomparable to nothing. I know John Mayer personally. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people I know. Extremely smart, articulate and genuine.
He has this relatable, down to earth quality to him. He is a world renowned superstar, and yet, every time I listen to him, be it his songs, his interviews, whatever, I feel like this guy is just a more successful version of me. He could have been this friend we all have from high school, talented but too shy to make it. He could have been this brother who guides you through life with words of widsom and neverending support. Very few artists are able to navigate and stay themselves without being eaten alive. Mark Knopfler comes into mind as a bit of the same type for me. I flew all the way from France just to see Mayer live last year, and will also see him in Paris in march. He's become, through his songs, a dear friend to me rather than an artist.
