Korea is living its best car life right now: Hyundai and Kia are cranking out daring designs and fun-to-drive cars that ought to have the European old guard sweating. But what does the future hold for Hyundai’s souped-up N Division? The hydrogen fuel cell N Vision 74 and dual-motor electric RN22e concepts provide some clues - and they’re not just for display. Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew headed to the spectacular Bilster Berg circuit in Germany to lap them both - and see if Korea’s ideas for saving sports cars are ones we should be excited about...

  • People on comment section are saying 'design looks inspired by DeLorean' but what's funny is, as a matter of fact, it was DeLorean that was inspired by the original Pony Coupe concept car, the car that N Vision 74 is based on. Pony Coupe was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and it was revealed to the public in Torino motor show in 19'74'. 74 that gave a name to this car. However, at that time, Hyundai didn't see commercial possibility of Pony Coupe, so it remained to be a concept car, nothing more. In that same motor show, was the founder of DeLorean, John DeLorean. He saw this concept car and called the Giugiaro. He literally told him to design another sports car that looks like Pony Coupe. That's how the DeLorean was born. So yes, this N Vision 74 is based on the original of the original. Interesting facts.

    • It's an interesting aesthetic: the 'futuristic' look. It was very popular in the 80's; think Star Wars and Delorean DMC-12's. Manufacturers are always trying to stay ahead of the curb and believe that their product represents the future, but a futuristic aesthetic blatantly attempts to be ahead of it's own time. In retrospect, futuristic fashions often look ridiculous because what people imagine about the future is always based in the present. Over the past decade the only cars that I like enough enough to buy brand new at full MSRP are the Toyota 86, Nissan Z, and this.

    • Remember, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle (HFCV), is just an EV that stores its energy in a tank full of hydrogen instead of a large battery. However, in order for an HFCV like this to have such performance specs it will need a large battery (although not as large as those in a fully electric vehicle), to act as buffer for the fuel cell. This is because a typical fuel cell sized to fit in an automobile normally cannot produce the amperage necessary for continuous high performance. The output of the fuel cell needs to be buffered and to have this buffer filled (fully charged), before you can smash the throttle and expect maximum power to the electric motors. Even then the power cannot be continuous as the buffer will eventually drain under high demand, usually after 15 seconds or so depending upon the size of the buffer. To date I'm aware of no HFCV's that can operate without a buffer.

Shifting and engine noise is such an important reference for how fast you are going when on the track. • Actually it is kinda makes sense in car maker market. Historically speaking, in order to push the car making technology, the only way to do it is by focusing in engineering, when a car is well engineered, chances are the fan would like to make the most out of it by using aftermarket stuff, and with that the manufacturer support that too, the relationship goes mutually. Seeing the history of hyundai, we know that it might be one of the big car manufacture that for some reason ( correct me if im wrong here) didnt have a stake in racing, you might be thinking there are no correlation between big car manufacture and racing, but in more way than one, racing will always about pushing the technology and engineering to the limit, so when a car manufacture win a specific racing, you could correlate like this : X brand wins le mans 2022, it must be because they make the car so well engineered!. And in many sector, hyundai cant beat car racing in conventional one, but electric racing car is still up for to take, we know that the current market still on tesla, but as much we like it, tesla might not win if you compare it by company size, and it seems hyundai know that

They have also been building up hydrogen fuel stations and fast charge stations all over, especially the areas between cities at rest stops along the interstates over the past year. I think in a couple of years there are going to be a lot more hydrogen based EV models revealed as Hyundai and Kia have both pledged to leave out of petrol by 2035 entirely and are currently retooling their factory and robotic production lines.
