Travis Wilkinson and his family were on a sailing trip in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, far north of the Arctic Circle. In late July, 2015, they were traveling through Hinlopen Strait, west of the largest island, Spitsbergen-an impossible route some summers, when pack ice blocks passage. But that summer, ice was especially sparse, making hunting harder for polar bears. These apex predators favor waiting at the sea ice’s edge, striking seals as they approach. A few days earlier, the Wilkinson family had been farther north, near the ice. There, bears looked healthy. But the scene just after midnight on July 23 was desperate. Mother and cub were struggling, skin hanging loose. According to Jon Aars, of the Norwegian Polar Institute, the cub, seven or eight months old, was likely to die if its mother didn’t eat soon. She probably wasn’t lactating. Wilkinson saw the bear sniff the air, picking up something of interest. This thin female couldn’t attack a healthy, full-grown walrus. A carcass would solve their problem. If the walrus were weak or sick, predation might be an option. But that walrus was alive and well. The situation was unworkable. The search for food went on.

  • This mother polar bear is on the hunt for food for her young, but can't attack a large live walrus on her own. How do you think this mother bear can feed her young given the current circumstances? The issue comes when bears get invasive searching for food inside sheds or garages. They often get shot because they attack people or simply scare them. If a bear is shown to be incapable of hunting and consistently invading human places, a nuisance bear, it’s typically euthanized

  • It's videos like these that break my heart. Seeing them both so skinny, and starving for food, while knowing that just 30-40 years ago at this time, skin probably wouldn't be hanging loose on their bodies, and an approx. 8 month old cub wouldn't look as though they're 3 months old.

    @ka10187@ka101872 жыл бұрын
    • Not true. You just didn't have the visual as accessible 40 years ago before the internet. Now that we have camera's everywhere, we see things more that we would never see before. So it's not the world that has really changed, it's our perception of it because we are able to see more. Polar bear starvation happens, period. In fact, there are more polar bears now than there was 40 years ago....over 5-8 times more. The notion of polar bear decline in modern times is a complete and total myth. But as their numbers increase, so will food scarcity and incidences where they don't manage to get enough food. Even a few failed hunts is the difference between life and death in cold climates. Humans used to starve all the time too, before agriculture and even after agriculture, before modern distribution and refrigeration. Humans even still starve today, in a world of abundant food. Not even because people are greedy, but rather, because of the remote environments they live in and their cultural ways that keep out modern advancements. It's why Ebola is soo deadly in Africa.....not because they don't have the medical knowledge to prevent it, but rather, because of cultural behaviors that foster the spread.

      @peoplez129@peoplez1292 жыл бұрын
    • @@peoplez129 I see your perspective on the situation, however what you are saying regarding polar bear population increase is false. Polar bear populations 40 years ago, in the 1980s, were estimated to be from 20 000 - 40 000 where sea ice (their natural habitat) was more accessible for them during the artic summer months. Today, there is an estimate of 22 000 - 31 000 polar bears. These population estimates show a decline of 9000 in the maximum for polar bear populations size, which makes it evident, among other factors, that the polar bear population size has decreased. Even though these numbers vary by the thousands, especially that from 40 years ago, logically it would make more sense that in the past their population size would be more abundant due to more of their habitat actually being available to them during the spring - fall months. I understand what you mean by food scarcity and hunger occurring, but through polar bear health and population research, it has become increasingly common for adult and cub polar bears to be fairly to severely underweight, as displayed in this video. However, I do agree with your statement that a few failed hunts in arctic and/or polar environments can be the death of an animal habituated in these regions. I disagree with your statement that polar bear decline is a myth, because there are dozens of research papers and articles suggesting that this is the reality for polar bears among hundreds of other species due to climate change. This video is evidence of something that is becoming increasingly common in the polar bear species, and it is for that reason that I find it very sad to watch. The technology accessible to monitor species populations does allow for an increase in both healthy and starving polar bear sightings, but it is the increase underweight and starving polar bear sightings that is most worrisome.

Starvation has always occured in nature and a larger abundance of food and habitat doesn't change that. Most animals breed at a rate higher than the natural resources can sustain with the extras dying off.
