A record *17 defenses* of the WBC junior featherweight belt, all by stoppage, and a shiny *WBC featherweight prize* are what Gomez brought into the ring against “The Professor” himself, *Azumah Nelson.* Behind on the three Judges scorecards, *Zoom Zoom* rallied in that Last Round to become World champion in Puerto Rico. 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊

But all respect for Nelson who gave the great Sanchez all he could handle in his last tragic fight.

    • What I'm talking about is Azumah called McGuigan out right after demolishing Pat Cowdell in his great post fight interview. Any fighter worthy of being called Champ must respond to this but Barry never. PS Barry beat an OLD Pedroza

    • Granted , Azumah Nelson was a brilliant Boxer one of the greatest Featherweights of all time . . But he was beatable as the legendary Salvador Sanchez did do so in 1982 . . A rematch was in the pipeline for 1983 but it didn't happen as Sanchez died in a Car Wreck 2 months after the Nelson fight . . PS Pedroza was 29 when McGuigan fought him , hardly old is it ? He was the reigning Champion for 7 years . .

    • Yes. Nelson started that fight by showing Sanchez the Ali shuffle. By half way Sanchez had him doing the chicken dance. No other fighter beat him so easily or badly and none but Sanchez stopped him. Nelson, like Laporte and Gomez, had to wait until Sanchez was no longer around to become world champion.

    • @@markcynic808 "had to wait until Sanchez was no longer around" Sanchez died two months after he fought Nelson and they had a rematch scheduled. Its by no means beyond the realms of possibility that Nelson would have won. Any man who can jump into the ring with Sanchez in his 15th fight on two weeks notice with a broken mouthpiece and give him the hardest fight of his life deserves to be considered as a potential victor in a rematch.
