Woodturning - MAXED OUT !!
Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - Whomping Willow (Iridescent Finish)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a green willow log into a large vase with an iridescent finish.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

I gotta say I’m not a fan of painted wood , however I do like the use of this particular application 🙂 Thank you for sharing your ability and craftsmanship on yet another intriguing wood turning project 👍
Thanks Chris. Much appreciated buddy 😊👍🏻
I honestly had no idea where this was going. Starting with that huge log and ending with that beautiful vase! I'm impressed to say the least!
Thanks a lot Julee!

BLASPHEMY of the painted wood! 👍
Blasphemy?
@@JackMackWoodturning I'm just messing with ya, I'm not a fan of painted wooden items. I love the look of the grain.
Interesting how willow makes fairly flat strips when you turn it. A lot of hardwoods make curls and spirals. Great work as always.
Thanks T. Much appreciated my friend 😊👍🏻😉
Can you imagine the trial and error to get this to do right by hand and sight? Skills!!!!!!!!!!
Thank J. Much appreciated 👍🏻🙏
Beautiful vase, I wouldn’t adulterate the wood with all that paint though, you may as well use glass or plastic as the natural grain is totally covered. But each to his own I guess, thanks for sharing!
Hi Kath. I wouldn’t either. I create these video’s for entertainment purposes. I did it so others won’t have to 🤣👍🏻😊
There are many woods which are important to save the grain but, as an amateur woodturner, willow if far down the scale. This has turned out to be a superb project.
Astonishing.
Thanks Skeeter!
Sir, Your creativity knows no bounds. I am beginning to think that with nothing more than your lathe you could solve world peace, end hunger, and start a space program, if only you had the time.
We have come so far from our first interactions mr guy. 😊 we humans could creat world peace if we just decide to be a little more understanding
@@JackMackWoodturning You got that right. Living here in Florida I am right in between some groups that do not understand each other at all, and do not seem like they want too.
To jack mac good luck on your wood 🪵 turning from paul chapman
Thanks Paul 😊👍🏻
This is a beautiful vase!! I loved how you applied the paint to the vase while it was still turning. You have an incredible talent! Video was wonderful, just an artist with his tools! Bravo Sir!!
Thanks Chris. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😉

Brilliant at first I was like what's he doing with spray paint but the droplets look amazing. Don't know why I'd ever think to question your vision you are in a league of your own thanks for letting me watch the process.
No problem P. Thanks for watching 😉👍🏻

Beautiful vase. Nice work... Ibrahim. TR.
Thanks TR. I’m in the process of making another one. The new one is going to be waaaay better. 😁👍🏻😉
I know this is an old video but a trick us furniture restorers do in order to get two lines to look like none is take small amounts of wood glue put it on the line and immediately sand it. The wood glue and sawdust fill in any gaps. You can’t tell that it was ever cut. Love your videos!
Holy moly rocky. I could not imagine how this would turn out when you started with that huge log! Very cool project!
Thanks Rebecca! Glad you liked it.
I thought he was making a huge bowling pin.

Великолепная работа! Мне очень нравится, когда человек получает удовольствие от работы. Когда я смотрел самое начало ролика, то подумал, что таким образом можно делать спагетти.
Spaghetti?
@@JackMackWoodturning Стружка получается очень длинная и похожа на спагетти. Шутка.-)
Great stuff. Thanks.
Beautiful vase and clever painting idea.
Thank you so much 😊
...well, you never cease to amaze me with what you mount up to that lathe...and again, I'm amazed!...👍
You even liked the paint?
@@JackMackWoodturning ...generally, I'm a fan of wood grain...but I understand you wanted to hide the glue lines...and let's face it, the willow grain is fairly unremarkable without some other technique to enhance it... But, to answer your question, yes...I like paint...and especially the technique you used to produce it...I like the way you think and your approach to different projects...👍

That's therapeutic to watch
Thanks Mo. Much appreciated buddy 😉👍🏻
That thing is beautiful!
Great job But having worked in the timber industry for a long time it pains me to see wood coloured
I couldn’t agree more. 99% of the time I celebrate the wood, as you can see from my other video’s. This was just an experiment with iridescent paint. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
I know it's a year later, but coloured wood can be beautiful ... if it's *stain* and the grain, texture, and surface are on full display. Then the visual appearance of the wood can be enhanced by well-chosen stain (even if it's not a natural wood colour). Paint just blocks out everything and then the nature of the material is obscured. Which might be right for something that's mass-produced out of cheap ugly wood -- but with a well-done bit of serious woodcraft it's just a sin. 🙂
It pains me to see the vast wastage of natural timber to make this object; furthermore, agree it’s wood, why spoil all the very skilled work by painting it? 😢
I noticed what was probably glue at the seams. I suspect that trying to stain would be difficult.
Una meraviglia di vaso complimenti 👌Silvano di Schio Vicenza 🇮🇹
😊👍🏻
I thought it was going to be a giant bowling pin. 😂😂😂😂
😆… did you like the end result ?
@@JackMackWoodturning loved the end results.
МАСТЕР!
You could probably sell all those shavings to some fancy backpacker website as good fire starter material. 😁
That certainly isn’t a bad idea 🤣
I love the colors. Well done!
Sees giant log, expects a toothpick. Cartoons have destroyed my reasoning skills. Watching log turn into a spin art vase, amazed and flabbergasted. That's all folks.
Love to see you stain it next time, nice work.
The paint wasn’t nice was it? 🤣
Marvelous!! //Lars

Good job sir......

Classy.
Glad you enjoyed it Moss. Thanks for watching 😁👍🏻
Outstanding work very inspirational great
I can’t believe you mounted that monster with a tiny spur drive!
The fish! That’s a 2” drive. It’s as big as they come. My lathe Max’s out at 20”x 50” So that gives you some idea how big this is. I’m on the hut for a log that will fully max her out so watch this space. Appreciate you watching 😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning My mistake, Jack. My lousy spur drive is practically useless!
I completely understand you saying that. It looks like it shouldn’t work. 🤣 Its also much safer in this application that other holding methods. I appreciate you watching 😊👍🏻
Absolutely beautiful

Looks like a fun project
Do you do much wood turning?
I just started about 6 Mo ago. I'm 80 miles from the nearest road in Alaska and have thousands of Birch, Spruce and some Cottonwood trees. I mostly use Birch crotch and Burls. I have a small 12" Delta that a friend sold me but now I'm looking for something substantial. I don't want to buy Chinese so that pretty much limits me to Oneway and Robust but they are so expensive I'm on the fence.
Sounds like a beautiful place to be buddy. You Must find some amazing birch burls ey ?
Literally thousands. Spruce, Birch and Cottonwood, that's about it. I haven't tried Cottonwood yet.
Another masterpiece... good show...
