  • I have no idea if someone else has commented what I'm about to post, but I'll say it anyway. I have played and replayed this game many times, appreciating the story anew and experiencing new and more brilliant aspects each time. For me, the final track is the most beautiful, but I'm a softie for the human voice, particularly when recreating an approximation of the sound of an ancient language, which will never be really known. It has been seen said, and should be well known by now, that Austin Wintory used the First Tablet of the Enuma Elish, the Babylonian creation epic telling of the slaying of Tiamat by Marduk and the creation of the world from her corpse and various other wonderful things. It is also known that 'Abzu' is the English transliteration of the Sumerian (pretty sure) word meaning many things like "wisdom/freshwater/life," or perhaps best captured as "to know the water which brings forth life." Playing through the game makes this meaning clear even without being an Assyriologist, though perhaps the architecture could clue someone in with knowledge of ancient civilizations! Abzu is also a god. He was the husband of Tiamat, the mother. He represented the 'sweet-waters' (fresh, life-giving waters, particularly groundwater) and Tiamat represented the saltwater and oceans. "When on high, and the Earth went without form" there were the waters, who, from their mingling, brought forth life, their children: various gods and deities. From the corpses of these ancient waters, the world was constructed and water flows through all things with and without life. Also present in this game is the explicit story of our little robotic diver, who is in perfect communion with the water till that fateful moment where they learn the truth of themselves (which itself very tied to that Jungian individuation process), then it all fractures, peace and harmony and love. How can a being which was created to take advantage of this beautiful, primordial sea exist anymore within it, especially after it destroyed it, indirectly or directly? To become reunited with the water which it grew to love, the diver, plunging into the depths of its own self, takes down that evil which invaded itself and the ocean. The diver goes through a process of atonement to make up for the sins of those who came before it and the sins of its own making, which have driven the holiness out of the oceanic temple. Purify the self, atone for the sins, and life returns to the world and sanctity to the individual. According to Julian of Norwich, to atone is to become 'at-one' again. Our little diver makes itself 'at-one' with the waters, reuniting them as well, and restoring the balance to this Abzu, the sea of wisdom at the center of all things, particularly, you the player. And we feel at peace, finally, and lose ourselves in the singing and the voices at the end, which, appropriately, link us back to the very beginning with the creation of the world. When on high, and the earth went without form, neither Heaven nor earth were named, no destinies ordained...

    • Absu could mean different things depending on the context (and whether you read the cuneiform as a sound or a symbol) but most of the time it is a reference to either the groundwater table or the sea/ocean. Referring to the mythological realm of endless water ruled over by Enki/Ea, it is quite likely also the origin of the word "abyss".

  • Playing this game is surreal. It makes me want to cry and smile, laugh and weep. Dance with colorful ribbons, yet also sleep in a pile of fluffy feathers. This game with it's gleaming lights, astounding colors, visuals that looks like a moving canvas of an artist's wildest, most glorious dreams, and above all, it's breathtaking soundtrack, helped me through a moment of despair in my life. Like light being brought into a dark room and illuminating it fully, even more than light, like oceans flooding a dry and lifeless land, filling it with life. This game touches my soul on an spiritual level that I never thought any game would be able to, it is visual poetry, a masterpiece in every way possible. I love ABZÛ, a lot. If you haven't played this game, I suggest you do, it's a wonderful experience! :)

  • To be a bit explicit : the majority of sentences in the OST titles are extracts of the first paragraph of Enûma Elish, a sumerian poem telling the birth of the world and the gods thanks to the union of Abzû, the pure water, and Tiamat, the salted water. To me, that answers a bit of questions surrounding the long-gone civilisation in the game and the title of the game.
