Why You Don't Need Freesync for LFC - LG C9 Owners Can Rest Easy

We demonstrate that LFC (low frame rate compensation) works even over HDMI Forum VRR on an Xbox One X console, using the secret infobar on an LG CX OLED TV with [Freesync Premium] disabled.
Once again, LFC is 100% GPU-drive, and not exclusive to AMD Freesync. Here is a video from 5 years ago demonstrating that Nvidia G-SYNC already has its own low frame rate compensation technology built-in, even though it's not advertised as such:
• Dissecting G-Sync and ...

Thanks for testing this Vincent. We are NOT in disagreement - It's all about risk to the consumer. As I said in my video, if the Series X doubles its frame rate for all VRR TVs regardless of Freesync Premium or not, that's great, we all win. But if Series X chooses not to do it for whatever reason, then that's a risk the consumer will have to bear. Look at the HDMI 2.1 AVR fiasco - one day it claims to support 4K120 HDR pass through, the next day it's wrong. Without the Series X in hand to validate, I dare not go out on a limb and tell viewers "it doesn't matter, get any new TV with VRR and you'll still get LFC support from Series X" then I'm absolutely putting the burden of risk on the consumer. I will not do that. I agree that if you ALREADY have the C9, don't buy a new TV just for Freesync Premium, wait and see if it works. For those buyers debating between 2 new TVs, there will always be risks involved and my objective is to clarify those risks. From a product management perspective, it's easier to demand a refund/replacement if Freesync Premium doesn't deliver LFC than to demand the same of a VRR TV that never promised LFC.
Vincent is the MAN. best TV guy on youtube HANDS DOWN!!
This!

You just "Stopped the FOMO".
Lmbookk
lmao. My other favorite guy.
fomo is a respected guy. still i think vincent is more proffesional. he is experienced in this industry an knows stuff about calibration. but i appreciate both men:)
Vicent always with good news for the C9
I'm kicking myself for saving a few bucks and going for the C8 instead (a bit over a year ago).
Mine turns up tomorrow! :D
Will be interesting to see whether the new Navi cards will support VRR on the C9.
Thanks Vincent, feeling a lot better about my beloved C9. Always listen to the professional calibrator and not just people with youtube channel who act like they know, but know nothing. Vincent is priceless.
Thanks, Vincent, I own a c9 and am glad this has been cleared up and have been a happy owner of c9 tv. This makes me even more delighted to have gone with the c9 knowing this. Especially since the c9 has full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 as well. I dont plan on upgrading my tv for a good 7-10 years since it's easily been the best choice of TV, since my previous tv purchase which was a Sony 4K 65X9300C LED TV.
Thank you Vincent, your analysis is most reassuring.
Good to know for us C9 owners ! Thanks so much for this info.
THANKYOU SO MUCH! Been waiting for a clarification video on this topic for so long!!! So much misinformation from other channels!! LG C9 customer here happy as heck! :D
Vincent you are the man bring calm to the C9 owners and other tv owners to .
Just wanted to say thanks, been trying to find a good explanation on how FLC works overall as a whole and your's is by far the best I've found, despite looking for a new monitor rather than a tv lol. Thank you. ♥
More top notch, accurate and consistent information from the best TV man on KZhead. I hope the channel keeps growing to get this chap the recognition he deserves. 👍
I feel better now about my C9. Kept wondering if I had jumped the gun and should have waited for the CX but I guess I’m good. Thanks for clearing this up Vincent!
Thanks Vincent for clearing things up. Been worried about LFC since I have the C9.
Was never worried about it personally people like "stop the fomo" were just out to create it (fomo) if you understood how vrr works and what lfc means to it then you understood it would be there with or without something like FreeSync premium
Really appreciate every information from Vincent, I can have peace of mind, I just bought C9 65 inch in my country for 1400$ and I'm really happy with my purchase 🙏
Thanks! You are my favourite channel now!
Great job Vincent ! Best explanation ever!
I really appreciate this video, because FOMO just dropped a video saying the complete opposite! I was thinking of switching my c9 65 for a CX, but you saved me, because I honestly think that besides that freesync update, the C9 is the better TV. Thanks Vince.
Thanks Vincent, very informative video.
You just made my day. Thank you.
This is a massive help and I now feel 100% confident in the 55" LG CX as my next TV to last me 8yrs+ is a safe bet. Trying to future proof myself as much as possible and think this is the best option all round for me.
can’t go wrong with the cx, best gaming tv hands down, just wait for Black Friday 👌
Thank you Vincent. C9 owner here and my soon expected xbox series X is looking better and better with my setup🤙
Glad I bought a 65inch c9, owner of c9 we are not missing anything
Yeah but what about b9? Vincent always leaves b9 out :(
@@danielkissgremsperger3242 I'm pretty sure the only difference is c9 uses better Chip and like 100 nits brighter they're like the same in everything else

Thanks Vincent. I have an E9 and feel much better even though I'm not a big gamer I still wanted the update.
Thanks vincent excellent video. I was worried a little After watching the stop the fomo video
Hey Vincent great content as always. Now that you have a killer PC I wonder if you'd do some experiments with MadVr and all its wonders. Especially the tone mapping options? :)

*Digital Trends and Stop the FOMO have left the chat...*
FOMO is enthusiastic but still clueless somewhat. He has not even got ISF training on calibration.
@@MrRaitzi stop the fomo is literally fomo.
Yeah fomo has been noted to put out misinformation multiple times.
Stop the Fomo sometimes gets caught up into the hype of a thing instead of understanding what a thing means in a practical sense.
What did Digital Trends do in regards to this?
Great info, thanks 😃
Great Video, quick question - thinking about getting a CX9. If the LFC works and pushes the framerate into VRR territory, wouldnt you still have the known panel-related VRR-HDMI 2.1 problem of flickering and / or artifacts, which can be either very noticable or not, depending on the individual panel? So one would have to choose whether low framerate related issues are worse or the known bug?
I’m so excited about all these updates about the C9 and can’t wait to get my PS5.
Me and you both man 😁 C9 + PS5
What are the updates
C9/CX + PS5 will be awesome, no doubt! The C9/CX + Series X will be the best combo for next gen as MS have added Dolby Vision support to the Series X. There won't be any games released with Dolby Vision support until next year unfortunately, but Dolby Vision has been the single most impressive feature in movies I've seen in years, so I would definitely consider a Series X if you have a C9/CX TV that supports it.
Ps5 does not support dolby vision and no atmos. So if you truly want the display to output everything you need a series x or rtx3080. PS5 is a good machine but lacking key features.
@@LockeNL PS5 supports HGIG though and tempest 3D audio. Their 3D audio was incredible on the PS4.
Great info - thanx !!
Don't confound us with facts and data! Leave us with our beliefs, emotions, and feelings. As always, good work.
Thank you. Merci 👍😊🙏 danke schön. My c9 is still compatible with the next gen consoles! Thank response
Thank you 👍😀
Thank goodness.
Vincent we need a cx vs bx video also comparing gaming between the 2.
Tnx for that, i have c9 and it is superb tv, waiting for ps5👍
Awesome news. So that means on the LG CX we can actually use Dolby Vision on our Xbox Series X and be able to use LFC and VRR. As Freesync premium disables Dolby vision. I thought I was going to have to pick if I wanted DV or wanted VRR. Now I get both!
Looks like VRR will be the better format, which is great because I have the E9/C9 model
So glad you did this video. One thing I'm noticing on my CX is that in picture game mode there seems to be a difference in frame rate to standard picture. Standard seems to be smoother. Why is this?
Great video Vincent. One question: I have a LG 49NANO86 and in the Freesync Premium options in the menu it has the choice between "off," "high" and "wide" which the OLED models don't appear to have. Do you know what these options mean?
Man You are the Best!
the green button also works for the nano 85/86 models as well, although not if the magic remote controls the xbox.
Nice video! Is this true also with LG C9 with a new RX 6800 XT?
Thnx for the review could you also tell me if I would be somehow limited with my 77C9 in regards to new consoles (VRR with missing FreeSync, 120Hz ....) also there are some news that HDMI 2.1 chips are broken . Thanks in advance
I love your content Vincent, but I am a little confused. Doesn't the menu you brought up and even the FPS display on the C1 just show the Hz that the input device is sending to the TV? Example, I can play an old 360 game with a frame rate in the 20's on my series x, but if I have the console set to 120hz output it will still show as 120Hz on the TV.
It will be interesting to see a video about next gen consoles missing S/PDIF out and the measurement of lag for a sound carried to LG CX from the console via HDMI and from LG CX back to the sound system via optical cable. This setup compared to the current Xbox One X sound output from its S/PDIF out directly to the sound system. Will we see an additional lag for the 1st scenario?
Thanks for your work. I’m just completely lost with these technologies. I have a Q80T that I want to pair with my new gaming rig (Nvidia RTX 3080) to have good 4K high refresh rate but I don’t know if it will be working. I hear contradictory statements from different sources, about the VRR, HDR, 4k120 etc not working together... if sometime in the future you could address all these problems I would love it. Thanks Vincent
Thank you Vincent! 🤗 So my Lg C9 with Belkin hdmi 2.1 cable will be compatible for the Ps5, and I can play Dirt 5 120fps, Devil May Cry 5, or next year Gran Turismo 7 1440p 120 fps? 😅
I think the thing to clarify is this: -The GPU commands the framerate and "tells" the display at wich frame it should go, so yes, the GPU is fundamental to LFC as it commands the display itself to show the same frame twice or thrice. BUT, remember said display has to have the correct modules to support LFC, despite a display supporting VRR it needs processing for LFC, remember, this is the reason why nVidia uses proprietary chips inside each monitor/TV certified as G-sync. In conclusion: LFC can be supported without Freesync (as this is the name AMD gave VRR support over HDMI wich already existed previously via displayport), but the display actually needs hardware for it. Hope this helps folks looking for new monitors/TVs.
"Hope this helps folks looking for new monitors/TVs" Unless the monitor/TV is clearly advertised for it, only way to know is if it's covered by professional reviewers or others who've bought the display and tested it themselves. May be obvious, but I'm just pointing it out :)
Will hdmi 2.1 big navi cards be able to do the freesync workaround on the 2019 lg oled models? I want to get 120hz hdr freesync enabled on my b9, with hdmi 2.1 Will that be possible? Can you test it when big navi comes out vincent??
Awesome thanks for testing that. Another interesting data point would’ve been what happens with VRR disabled in the Xbox system. Does the free sync info pane show 30 Hz?
No, the consoles always output 60hz
@@hdtvtest oh that’s right, makes sense. Loosely related but have you come across anything for QMS? As I understand, it is a subset of VRR so if the TV supports VRR, it too should support QMS. It’s the last lingering doubt I have about the HDMI 2.1 feature set. Looking forward to that color space matched/ frame rate matched future Apple TV without black screen cut out for format switches. The Marantz/Denon 2020 AVRs have a display info setting that shows all compatible 2.1 function of the connected display but I asked on some forums and videos and haven’t been able to get anyone to show that QMS shows up as discreetly supported. Thanks for all your work in this essential service during lockdowns.

Once again, top notch explanation for us normal users. Your videos are great, but this video didnt have any trademarke joke in it...or did I miss that?
Hello Vincent, thanks for the video. Could you please make a follow up video regarding the C9 HDMI 2.1 VRR AMD driver problems. RX6000 GPUs still cant enable HDMI Forum VRR with C9,CX,C1. So is it AMDs oder LGs fault? Community is killing each other on reddit about this topic...
Hey Vincent @HDTVTest. Thanks for the video. Two questions: 1. How do I evoke the info bar on my C9? Smashing the green button doesn't seem to work. Are there any other steps I need to take to unlock this feature? 2. Comparing how other displays, be it in smartphones etc. are usually set to specific points (60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz...) doesn't it actually mean the "40-120" in your example are also only specific points and not a range? And why its not a 1-120 range?
1. You can get to the menu like this twitter.com/evilboris/status/1319998580401311744?s=21 2. That is a range. I’m not sure why , but there is an argument to say you would never want to drop the refresh that low as they would be very flickery.
@@EvilBoris thanks for the answers. While the menu doesn't look anything like the one in the video (nor does it involve smashing the green button), I guess it does the trick. Will try it out with a few games on the Xbox.
This is a very good video, and helped me understand too that I don't need Freesynch on with my LG CX because it also disables Dolby Vision. I have a question for your next video. There are a lot of complaints online about black crush with the LG CX televisions. Can you do a similar video like this one and the one you just did on the Nano90 vs the CX on black crush. Explain what it is, how you detect it, how bad it is. And also maybe compare black crush on the LG CX vs the Vizio and Sony OLEDs. Thank you. Keep up the good work. You do the best television review videos on the internet.
There are elevated blacks in Dopby Vision and some down elevated blacks in HDR10. It is just a off by one error somewhere.
@@lolerie I've heard that elsewhere in another video. But a lot of people online are freaking out about it in my opinion. Like, how bad is it, can it be corrected, will LG issue a fix if it's because a setting in firmware is off? And what about how it compares to the other OLEDs, and do they have similar black crush issues? Vincent also made some very interesting black crush comments when comparing the LG Nano90 and the CX so I think it would be a cool video to do a detailed analysis. I've seen a lot of videos (like That Shelf, Quantum TV, Digital Trends, Spare Change) and posts discuss it, complain about it, give brief demonstrations, and offer different causes from the simple being the TV needs time to "cook" in a sense, to, it's a nightmare that can never be fixed. But I haven't seen a full, in depth highly technical analysis of Black crush issues on the CX in multiple modes. And it would be cool to see Vincent's technical rigor look into the problem and compare it to other OLEDS. I really don't think there's been a video like that. In addition, he did a good job talking about how a Mac firmware update fixed Black crush on the Apple Pro Monitor nearly a year ago. I think he'd be perfect to do a similar video on this issue with the LG CX.
@@lolerie о чём идёт речь в этом видео?
@@admirall.ackbar I'm currently still running an LG E9 (which is basically a C9 with Dolby Atmos speakers). Black crush was one of the first things I noticed before I even saw a review of the TV. I don't know how C9/E9 compares to CX because I haven't had any time with the CX, but it is very difficult to calibrate out. I've found ways to lesten the extent of the crush, but not get rid of it without impairing the image quality overall. To sum black crush up, you're losing contrast and definition in dark or almost black scenes. This is more exaggerated in gaming I find. For instance, when you're in a night scene and you look at a tree and you can't quite make out the branches correctly because it's all gelled together in a dark mess. That's about the best way to describe it. And back to your question about how that compares to Samsung's QLED, I have an early QLED panel also and it just isn't an issue unless you're playing a game which has an inherent issue there already. Strangely enough, the Xbox consoles are more prone to it than the Sony consoles, and it varies between games as well. The thing is you could adjust your OLED display to calibrate the crush out, or simply change the setting on the console to RGB limited, but you lose the contrast and get a washed out or grey looking image on dark scenes similar to that of a non-OLED panel. I believe the issue lies with the way OLED illuminates the pixels individually rather than via a backlight/edge light. The darker the scene, the less light there is to illuminate the picture and hence the crush effect. It's almost a compromise between clarity and overall image quality when it comes to QLED vs OLED. QLED or LED TVs in general, can offer a sharper clearer image, but at the cost to that wow factor of contrast and black levels.
Dolby vision is not gaming format. I hope consoles automate VRR to dolby vision switching while gaming and not gaming.
Hey Vincent, Can you make a "how to calibrate TVs" Video please? Thanks ✌
Thank you
Thanks for LFC and Freesync clarification. About how VRR can cause trouble with HDR FALD algorithm, do you have any source on that? Thanks

LGTVs' brightness change unpleasantly when LFC is switched on and off on the 50 Hz boundary. Try the manual setting of 40 Hz-60 Hz with the G-SYNC DEMO and you'll see it.
Can you also speak about the B9 in this type of videos, please? Thank you.
I have a 6900XT and a LG C9 OLED and I can confirm LFC, VRR works as described in this video.
When I play games in 30 hz there is a lot of judder. So how does it help 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for the video Vincent, there's a few things I would like to point out (from respect, and ignorance actually) Xbox One X it's confirmed to support freesync, but no HDMI 2.1 VRR thanks to your test it seems to work, somehow... Ps5 it's kinda the opposite, it has confirmed VRR over HDMI 2.1 but never talked about freesync or LFC, would you think lFC will work over PS5 30 FPS games? there's A LOT of misinformation Online from what I've seen, and now this test give me even more doubts if it will. Will love to see a deep test from you with the new consoles, most of ps5 cuz Xbox we kinda know it will work. Your channel it's simply the best, hope to see more content for us, the gamers. Love from Venezuela.
Xbox One X has a option to enable VRR in the display settings so that is what we are seeing here
Thanks for great videos. Do you know how to fix the picture dropout/black screen now and then ? It happens with xbox, satbox and internal apps, so its not a cable problem
THANK YOUUUUUUUUU
LFC is working on the C9. Tested it myself (RTX3080) with and without HDR, also in comparison between normal VSYNC and VRR (Gsync compatible) at capped 35FPS. For many people it will be kind of subtle, for my eyes it's pretty obvious. Motion is stutterfree (vsync stutter/judder is gone), there are slightly less motion duplicates/flickering and most important there is no tearing. Every Display with 120Hz and a variable refreshrate is capable of LFC. If you set your next console to 60Hz you can use VRR but no LFC. But don't think LFC is doing some magic to low fps, low FPS will still look bad. The advantage here is it feels better if you going out of your VRR range, it's a smoother transition. You still want to stay within the VRR-range with at least 40fps (actual 41fps) at all cost, that's why you should buy a TV with the widest VRR range.
Does LG C9 do 4k 120 fps ? What is the advantage of getting of CX model? can you please me help me out, I want to buy either one of them
@@sriramsrinivas4431 Yeah of course it can do 4K120. CX has no real advantages in terms of gaming, nextgen-consoles will also use HDMI-VRR, so you don't need the freesync feature of the CX. Buy the model which is cheaper, you can't go wrong with both.

First comment here, so thank you Vincent for your videos. @lulkLogan I was going to ask for it. I'd love to see the same video in 60fps to actualy see how doubling the (same) frame makes the game smoother than 30fps without it.
@Nabil Tahri The game is still running at 30 fps. LFC just doubles the frames for the VRR and makes sure that there will be no tearing. Recording the video in 60 fps wouldn't make any difference.
@@juusoaho2906 Recording in 60fps would help us see that that stuttering has been reduced. Stuttering is a temporal phenomenon and frame rate gives you more temporal information.
@@juusoaho2906 then what's the point of LFC? VSync is already tearing-free. As @lulkLogan already point-out, we should experience no (or less) stuttering even though it'll never be as smooth as more fps.

I just bought my second 65” LG C9. This one is my primary gaming tv for my game room. Someone purchased it and returned it within the day. 1500 ftw!! I love my c9s.
LG C9 owner here . I currently use an Nvidia card (Gsync) with my TV. I'd really like to have AMD cards as an option. Any idea if VRR would work with RX 6000 series cards which have HDMI 2.1. Just wondering if there would be a considerable impact in terms of screen tearing and smoothness if I didn't go with an Nvidia card.
That LFC is controlled by the GPU is commonly known, as it normally activated when the min. Hz to max. Hz ratio is greater 2. However a Freesync Source and a Freesync Premium Display guarantees that LFC will be used. Everything else is just an assumption that the GPU will always take care of it... especially on consoles when just using Forum VRR. I really hope that you are right on this as this would solve a lot of headache. But I will first believe it when the XSX/PS5 has been launched and thorough tests have been done proving it. I hope Digital Foundry will look into it...

I thought I read the higher spec UK model of the Hisense TV's have FRC in them and as they have 120hz @4K I'm really keen for someone to tell me if it genuinely resolves that image properly or if it does a "Sony" and only does it one one axis ? Also how much actual screen tear there even is on a TV in that case without VRR also what happens if you try a sub 30FPS game on an LED/LCD TV ? People seem to just hands wave away 120hz/4K without actually saying if it's better than nothing (for compatible games) ?
Even IF 9-series owners missed out on a feature, what did they expect? no TV has EVERYTHING. The LG OLEDs are the best and closest thing ofc but there's always something new and shiny around the corner. It's like a building a computer. You buy the latest stuff. Build an amazing machine and 6 months later there's already some shit you might want cause that's how technology works. That being said, this was never a real problem. It was people who like to have all the boxes ticked on a list of features without even knowing wtf they mean. As long as they compare TVs and one TVs list of features is longer, it's therefore better. Thank you for being patient ant explaining stuff the way you do tho. I learn a lot regardless of topic.
Really all you need for LFC is that the VRR maximum is at least twice the minimum so that if the frame rate drops even just 1 below the minimum, the card can compensate. Every single “high refresh rate” (120 hz+) displays will have their minimum be 40 or 48, which is enough for this technology to work
Can you do an updated video on 120 hz flicker in dark scenes please
what about regular v sync? it i falls below vrr range. until now it what have been used.
what i would like to see is - does this tech works if tv is connected via HT receiver? if the work is done on GPU side and receiver is just running passthrough, theoretically it should, even if the receiver is not 2.1 HDMI or VRR and FCC enabled?
Ok for the console case but what about a PC with AMD RX card ?

LFC is enabled when the the VRR range is at least 2.5x between the highest and lowest refresh rate for both Nvidia and AMD GPUS.
