This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.

Heyhoo! This song was requested by my PATREON SUPPORTERS!
They chose wisely, you gave this song a great performance :) Have your heard of the game "Sea of Thieves"? The characters have a hurdy gurdy among onther instruments and thee music is beloved by many players, maybe you want to cover the songs or create a medley? ^^
will there be an instrumental version of this cover???
Loved it. Seeing Nightwish in Las Vegas next month. Just bought your EP.
This song is my favorite Nightwish cover (of Gary Moore's song), an amazing job you've done covering this song as well. I look forward to what comes next! (edited to give proper credit, Thanks Rictus for correcting who's song it is originally)
Heyhoo. This is only Gary Moore's song! Not Nightwish's. Nightwish only covered it themselves. I like their version very much but they did nothing to earn credits for this great song. All honors to Gary Moore! Your version is ok, but it lacks drive and power. Sorry, but as a fan of Gary Moore for more than 30 years - it doesn't convince me
So gifted girl. This version of song is truly amazing. I hope for Eurovision 2023 for her.
If she does i'm voting for her! Belgium never has any good stuff
Не надо ей в этот гадюшник. После травести пидара в финале - я хочу видеть Пэтти в других местах.
That lead riff sounds so much better on hurdy gurdy than guitar. I love this
It's a traditional Irish style riff, so naturally sounds better on more traditional style instruments, like here on the hurdy-gurdy, and also when played on fiddle and uillean pipes, like on the original Gary Moore version.
Her voice is the reason I understand why Odysseus tied himself to the mast to hear the sirens song.

I love that she has so much fun with her performance. Her enthusiasm is infectious! These guys should officially form a band. They'd definitely gain a following.
First off I'm shocked to be seeing someone actually playing a Hurdy Gurdy. Second this song turned out absolutely amazing.
There are plenty of players!
Nothing shocking about a hurdy gurdy, Even some people still play the recorder. In, like, orchestras. This is not weird. It is rare enough to get my attention, though. So that might be something. All the love for Patty, her singing and the instrument that she plays so well!
Eluveitie my friends! Look em up
amazing
Playing a Hurdy Gurdy is one thing. Rocking with a Hurdy Gurdy is something entirely else.
I'm at work today talking to a customer about The Witcher 3, specifically the background music, trying to figure out what instrument was used. The customer says "oh, thats a hurdy gurdy", and I say "No. That's not a thing. You're lying." So he pulls up one of your videos and now I've got a new obsession. How have I never heard of this before?
James Klarkowski what genre of music do you normally listen to? Cause that might be why.
@@zerotodona1495 You can probably listen to more than 99% of all music without ever having heard of hurdy gurdys anyway.
These days, hurdy gurdies are mostly used in folk music. It is an awesome instrument.
James Klarkowski, I had always heard of "Hurdy Gurdy Grinders" as a kid in the 1950s and thought the old folks were talking about organ grinders like I saw with monkeys at fairs. I worked for Bob Moog when I was in high school and liked unusual instruments, and when I was at college Donovan Leitch came out with "Hurdy Gurdy Man": kzhead.info/sun/dqyxlrOSf2qZmK8/bejne.html I was curious and did some research and have been intrigued ever since, even though I never got my hands on one. I think one of the best explanations of how a Hurdy Gurdy works is here: kzhead.info/sun/mr2Dl52bg51nqKs/bejne.html
I might answer that question like this. ... because your haven't lived long enough. Respect age.
I never knew what this instrument was called. I've always loved the sound ❤️ And to actually see someone who knows how to play it in today's day and age 👍 Thank you 🙏
this is definitely my favorite version of this song.
She really made this song her own. I love this cover so much
kzhead.info/sun/eMlsY6qre3OEnmg/bejne.html
It isn't her own?
@@thearcher9940 This song is a cover of the Gary Moore song.
@@chrisgates8891 The song is from the 1700s
Yes, there is a traditional song 'Over the hills and far away' from the 1700's, but it is a totally different tune and different words. Same as there is a song by Led Zeppelin 'Over the hills and far away' which is totally different. This version is a cover of the Gary Moore song.
MY Dog is like an emotional support dog, If I ever cry she comes to see why and make it stop. When this song started with the slow sad notes in the beginning, she came over immediately knowing the sound would draw my tears. when the song picked up and started sounding happy she was able to lay down and relax. I Love my dog. This is great music.
There’s something about her voice that just make me at peace
LYRICS: They came for him one winter's night Arrested, he was bound They said, "there'd been a robbery" His pistol had been found They marched him to the station house He waited 'til the dawn And as they led him to the dock He knew that he'd been wronged "You stand accused of robbery" He heard the bailiff say He knew without an alibi Tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom Over the hills and far away For ten long years, he'll count the days Over the mountains and blue seas A prisoner's life for him, there'll be He knew that it (would cost him dear) But, yet he dare not say Just where he'd been (that fateful night) A secret it must stay He had to fight back tears of rage His heart beat like a drum For with the wife of his best friend He spent his final night of freedom Over the hills and far away He swears he will return one day Far from the mountains and blue seas Back in her arms, again he'll be Over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills and far away Each night within his prison cell He looks out through the bars He reads the letters that she wrote One day he'll know the taste of freedom Over the hills and far away She prays he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas Back in his arms again, she'll be Over the hills and far away He swears he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas Back in his arms is where she'll be Over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills and far away
I was a U. S. Marine for 10 years as an infantryman . many times I had to " go over the hill and far away " whether by land or sea and leave my wife and children . it always broke my heart to do it , and your song brings back those times . But I also remember the sweet homecoming and the smiles and kisses it brought . my wife and I are old now , and the children grown and on their on but there are still smiles and kisses when we remember .

Incredible voice, musical talent, and beauty. Patty G should be a world-wide name by now.
This gal deserves so much more awareness.
First time hearing this, shivers all through the song. As a long time fan of Nightwish - thank you for this amazing piece of music. 🙏
Original is from Gary Moore back in the late 80s, all versions have their own flavor but they're all amazing!
@@Scurvy_Soso Oh, I did not actually know that. Thanks for pointing it out, much appreciated!🙏
I'm still coming back to this video after two years. It all came together here you know. It's enriched by your explanation of the instrument and what you love about it. Thank you Patty.
Wow, you have an old account
Never dreamed I'd hear a hurdy gurdy, much less on such a beautiful rendition of this song. Thank you.
I spent the first few seconds adjusting my volume and checking my headphones were plugged in.
There is more talent in this incredible song than what is played on current music stations in The States. Love it Patty.
The atmosphere alone is so strong in this version.
What's with KZhead actually recommending good things to me recently? I love it!
Omg same here! It recommended me "Oonagh" and i loved because i'm a Tolkien fan (you shoul try it, it's mindblowing)😍😍😍 and next this!? I'm almost in shock 😃
@@angeramirez25 came back to say thank you. Is there a song you prefer that I and the world should hear?
It's just a glitch; they'll have it fixed soon.
I get it too. A varied bunch of content as well!
Ditto
Holy cow, what she does with that Hurdy Gurdy is marvelous. Makes me wonder whether I should get one to learn how to play it.
You should! Just don't bother with a cheap instrument, they aren't really proper instruments, more like expensive props. Kolibri Gurdy is a good place to start, they are only about €5-600
There's not enough thumbs up available for this. I keep coming back to this. So haunting and emotional.
The instrument Patty is playing is called a Hurdy Gurdy. She actually is playing a customized model. Such an awesome sound!
Hehe Hurdy Gurdy.
i genuinely hope you're still singing Patty.... epic voice, epic look, epic vocals..... definitely more please
She's done a bit on the new alestorm album Curse of the crystal coconut
I like how the moral of this story is if you catch your wife cheating on you with your friend frame them for a crime
Better yet, "Don't cheat on your best friend with his wife."
@@Thomas.Wright cause if you do he just might get you locked up for a long ass time
I see I'm not the only one that thought it was a set up lol
Not quite as dark as The Long Black Veil, a classic Jonny Cash song, but dark enough.
Or maybe the moral is just don't get caught.
Patty is fantastic. She may be modern German, but in the romantic part of my heart she is 18th century Scottish or Irish. The music and images in her videos are some of the most beautiful ever recorded.
Well, England was formed by Germanic tribes Angle Saxons. Plus Celtic tribes and Germanic tribes lived next to each other as well. Plus let's not forget about the Vikings as well.
There arises occaisions sometimes in life where upon discovering a thing you feel that your life is more complete and enriched for having found it. This is one of those things. Thank you.
Amazing work Patty. Again you left me absolutely delighted.
It song made me cry. Thank you. My grandma played this song when I was little. You made an old man very happy. Thank you again
I love this song, year after year it's still so good.
For the first tike in my 30years of existence, I came across the sound of this small yet powerful instrument. It mesmerizes me, soothes the very aches of my soul in it's musky voice when it speaks the words only my soul can comprehend. Wow.
If you havent already, go listen to the Black Sails theme.

I've come back & rediscovered this beautiful song & others like it in my binge playing of the mystical folk songs collection & play list I have on you tube here. It is a fun thing to go & listen too & along with the other songs I've collected. In addition this song & others remind me of a long lost time in my growing up as a boy with Irish & other ethnic friends & their families in my junior high years when I was a runaway in my 7th grade year. I miss it & wish I could have it again especially with the truest of those friends one day of Gabriella valnaire a young Irish dancer I used to know who was a singer & gypsy like too.

I dont know why.. but still your voice nearly brings me to tears... Just absolutely outrageous considering I feel like I can never express my emotions...
This is sublime.. Love it when a song makes all the hairs stand up on your arms. I can see NW doing your version acoustically and wondering why they didn't at first. 😊
You, Janet Devlin, and Lindsey Stirling NEED TO DO A SONG TOGETHER
Idk about the other person but definitely w Lindsey Sterling
@@darth368 janet Devlin is another Irish singer who actually looks and sounds a lot like Patty but a little more higher pitched. I think both their voices together would compliment well, and then having Lindsey go crazy on the violin would be amazing!

A beautiful young lady singing one of Gary Moore’s best songs
The vocals is what makes it even better
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever seen
As a pianist, I’ve always been jealous of string players for the fullness they can add to individual notes and this seems like the perfect instrument to adapt to so I will not be any longer.

Fantastic, loved this song many years ago, and so good to revisit it in such a great version. KZhead recommendations may be rubbish most of the time but occasionally you get a gem like this.
I got the chills listening to this. That means, I am totally in love with Patty Gurdy and her magnificent voice and singing style. Awesomeness!
My absolute favorite song . It introduced me to nightwish. And I eventually learned their version was a cover. But honest from an 8-bit to a gurdy cover.. its honestly my absolute favorite song

I came here to see how one actually plays a Hurdy Gurdy. I had only ever heard of one and seen (poor) animated representations of one in games I play.
