This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.

    • Heyhoo. This is only Gary Moore's song! Not Nightwish's. Nightwish only covered it themselves. I like their version very much but they did nothing to earn credits for this great song. All honors to Gary Moore! Your version is ok, but it lacks drive and power. Sorry, but as a fan of Gary Moore for more than 30 years - it doesn't convince me

    • It's a traditional Irish style riff, so naturally sounds better on more traditional style instruments, like here on the hurdy-gurdy, and also when played on fiddle and uillean pipes, like on the original Gary Moore version.

    • James Klarkowski, I had always heard of "Hurdy Gurdy Grinders" as a kid in the 1950s and thought the old folks were talking about organ grinders like I saw with monkeys at fairs. I worked for Bob Moog when I was in high school and liked unusual instruments, and when I was at college Donovan Leitch came out with "Hurdy Gurdy Man": kzhead.info/sun/dqyxlrOSf2qZmK8/bejne.html I was curious and did some research and have been intrigued ever since, even though I never got my hands on one. I think one of the best explanations of how a Hurdy Gurdy works is here: kzhead.info/sun/mr2Dl52bg51nqKs/bejne.html

  • LYRICS: They came for him one winter's night Arrested, he was bound They said, "there'd been a robbery" His pistol had been found They marched him to the station house He waited 'til the dawn And as they led him to the dock He knew that he'd been wronged "You stand accused of robbery" He heard the bailiff say He knew without an alibi Tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom Over the hills and far away For ten long years, he'll count the days Over the mountains and blue seas A prisoner's life for him, there'll be He knew that it (would cost him dear) But, yet he dare not say Just where he'd been (that fateful night) A secret it must stay He had to fight back tears of rage His heart beat like a drum For with the wife of his best friend He spent his final night of freedom Over the hills and far away He swears he will return one day Far from the mountains and blue seas Back in her arms, again he'll be Over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills and far away Each night within his prison cell He looks out through the bars He reads the letters that she wrote One day he'll know the taste of freedom Over the hills and far away She prays he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas Back in his arms again, she'll be Over the hills and far away He swears he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas Back in his arms is where she'll be Over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills, and over the hills And over the hills and far away

Marine for 10 years as an infantryman . many times I had to " go over the hill and far away " whether by land or sea and leave my wife and children . it always broke my heart to do it , and your song brings back those times . But I also remember the sweet homecoming and the smiles and kisses it brought . my wife and I are old now , and the children grown and on their on but there are still smiles and kisses when we remember .

  • Here is the lyrics... They came for him one winter's night Arrested, he was bound They said there'd been a robbery His pistol has been round They marched to the station house, He waited for the dawn And as they led him to the dock, He knew that he'd been wronged "You stand accused of robbery" He heard the bailiff say He knew without an alibi, Tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom Over the hills and far away, For ten long years he'll count the days Over the mountains and blue seas A prisoner's life for him there'll be He knew that it that it would cost him dear, But yet he date not say Where he'd been that fateful night, A secret it must stay He had to fight back tears of rage His heart beat like a drum For with the wife of his best friend, He spent his final night of freedom Over the hills and far away, He swears he will return one day Far from the mountains and blue seas, Back in her arms he swear he'll be Over the hills and far away Over the hills and, Over the hills and, Over the hills and far away Each night within his prison cell, He looks out through the bars He reads the letters that she wrote One day he'll know the taste of freedom Over the hills and far away, She prays he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas, Back in his arms she swears she'll be Over the hills and far away He swears he will return one day Far from the mountains and blue seas Back in her arms is where he'll be Over the hills and far away She prays he will return one day As sure as the rivers reach the seas, Back in his arms is where she'll be Over the hills over the hills Over the hills and far away Over the hills over the hills Over the the hills and far away.
