    • Well, the original is by miles better than sequel. Not only because the visuals can compete with the sequel, but the story and twist were daring and genre defining movie itself. I can say none to sequel. It looks albeit beautifully composed, very flat. Story was especially obvious allegory, which astounded me. Scott as a producer shouldn't have backed up when Villeneuve asked not to trespass his directorial works.

    • Original Blade runner is maybe the greatest movie ever made, not just sci fi ... the sequel is kind of meh, its nice but with the original as a guide, thats the bare minimal most directors can come up with, there are so many even better cyberpunk illustrations on the internet more atmospheric and thoughtful than 2049 ..... the sequel has so much unfulfilled potential ....

      @88feji@88feji Жыл бұрын
    • @@88feji not only that, 2049 is around 40 minutes longer than it should. I agree with everything you said. Villeneuve, according to Ridley Scott who produced the film, asked Scott to not interfere with his vision. Admirable, but the script also was too weak. I dearly loved to see Scott direct the movie. I prefer The Terminator to Terminator 2: Judgment Day I think it's overrated with T1 I like it's 80'sness but I find that the twist doesn't make sense. I like The Matrix and Children Of Men. Ghostbusters I don't think it's aged that well apart from Bill Murray being the highlight of the film and some creativity in story. • But the premise was stupid. There is NO WAY that the universe is pre-ordained, but IF it is, then there is no way to measure or discern that, literally by its own logic. If we don't HAVE free will, the aliens can't come and undermine that, a. It won't occur to them to do it, because THEY HAVE NO FREE WILL TO DECIDE THINGS and b. It won't MEAN anything to us if they did "prove" it, nothing would change because everything is pre-ordained. STUPID, ill thought out premise on a STUPID movie. With a stupid female lead actor. I will leave it to your own imagination what liking that trash makes you, in my opinion.

Though there was a lot of questions about the meaning, if you read the book, the meaning becomes clear. But, what I found most fasinating was the special effects. As some scientists have said, this movie was as close to realism as they ever have seen on screen and I agree. I guess that is why I loved it so much. And, of course, I have since purchased the DVD and watch it every so often just for the amazement it gives.

  • Great list, thanks for compiling! Perhaps the list should be a bit longer? A top 40 or maybe 50? The original Invasion of The Body Snatchers was far better than the remake, just my opinion. The 1950s War of The Worlds will always belong in the top 10. Some of the following fantastic SF films may be unknown to younger viewers. I would suggest a longer list, just to be complete. Predator, The Andromeda Strain, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, The Thing, They Live, Lucy, Soylent Green, Stargate, The Fifth Element, Robocop, I saw Colossus: The Forbin Project at the Drive in - great SF, saw Alien at the theater with 2 other couples, I cannot overstate the shocked reaction of the entire audience, Charly, Destination Moon, The Edge of Tomorrow ( just a great SF film), The Brit Peter Cushing version of 1984 - best rendition of the book, Rod Taylor version The Time Machine, Fahrenheit 451, I am sure others will come up with more.. Many Honorable Mentions, 5 Million Years To Earth, Battle Los Angeles, Oblivion, Paycheck, Things to Come, The Incredible Shrinking Man, James Mason versions 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Journey to The Center of The Earth, Gravity - Sandra Bullock, Coneheads, Demolition Man..

  • 2001 is a great film but I still rate the original Star Wars "A New Hope" . as number one. Everything on a grander scale and far more character development. A whole new universe. And the good vs. evil storyline is like a great Western. The Empire Strikes back is entirely dependent on having seen the original. I rate it # 2. 2001 3rd. Alien and its sequel are more horror movies... than science fiction genre IMHO. Forbidden Planet was way, way ahead of its time and the characters really well done... including the robot. A great film with a great story based on Shakespeare. I always have a soft spot for Close Encounters. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a true classic.. The original Matrix is spellbinding.

  • "Inception" is fantastic. The only villain in the movie is the lead character's guilty conscience. The animated special effects in "Forbidden Planet" was supplied by Disney. "Aliens" was the perfect blend of horror, science fiction and a military action film. "Terminator 2" was somewhat ruined by its trailers that gave away a major plot point that would have knocked the socks off of those who saw it the first time - the fact that Arnie's Terminator was NOT the bad guy but the hero. "2001" was the monumental movie where "sci-fi grew up".

    • Star Wars is clearly and blatantly a fantasy series w/ sci-fi elements. It should never be an a sci-fi list. Do I own them? Yes. Have I ever called them sci-fi? Not once.

  • Westworld needs to be on the list at least honorable mention although as pure Sci-Fi it's on par with many of the top 10. Contact and Arrival are same category of film and both amazing. I have owned Silent Running on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD. Much like Firefly/Serenity the sci-fi is more a setting than a story but the story is one of the best of all time.

  • They better have “The Time Machine” (2002) on here, at least as an honorable mention.

  • Unpopular opinion: 2001 A Space Odyssey should not even be in the top 20, let alone #1. While 2/3 of the film is really intriguing, it completely falls apart in the end, with its super anticlimactic ending.

    • I think it's more that 1: It hasn't aged well. 2: The "apemen" in the prehistoric segment look ridiculous & fake. 3: Although there are some very provocative, futuristic & almost surreal ideas, the ending does try to be so open to interpretation that it ends up being too vague & doesn't really say much of anything.
