  • Torbjörn Nilsson was the best goalscorer in the UEFA Cup 81/82 and in the European Cup 84/85 and 85/86, while playing for a swedish amateur side. He scored more goals in european football than anyone else from 81 to 86 when he suddenly retired at the age of 32 to become a chef. One of his last games was the semi final of the 85/86 european cup against Barcelona where he scored two goals. Sven knows what he's talking about.

    • @@ScrivScrivener Of course it's a matter of opinion, but neither Vieri or Crespo has ever been top scorer in europe and Torbjörn has a vastly better goal average then them. He scored 14 goals in 14 games for IFK in the European Cup and 12 goals in 14 games in the Uefa Cup. And, again, it was for a swedish amateur side against big teams like Barcelona, Hamburg and Kaiserslautern.

    • If he was the best striker Sven ever coached? Maybe, maybe not but he was in the same league as the players he had in Lazio, Sampdoria, Benfica etc. And I thinks it's great of Sven to give a shoutout to Torbjörn who is criminally forgotten and anyone who laughs at that only shows his ignorance.

Before Svennis won the Uefacup the club was in a chaotic state, several board members were forced to resign, and they had millions in debt. The year Svennis won the Uefacup they even had to take out a loan just to travel to the game against Valencia. The victory in the cup saved the clubs economy, there is no way the would have managed to be as succesfull later in the 80s without that revenoue that the Uefa cup win generated. • He was a bluffer who was fine when the players were able to do it for him but would sit on his hands doing nothing when things were going wrong, instead of being proactive and doing something positive to earn his money. For England, the "Golden Generation" team basically picked itself when fit, considering how few English players there were available in the PL, Sammy Lee took the training sessions and I remember one substitution where there was a mix up regarding which player came off/went on and so the wrong one was made, yet Sven sat there twiddling his thumbs instead of getting up and taking control......It makes you wonder what he actually did for his money! Then on top of all of that, he was secretly touting himself out to clubs like Chelsea for the money when still England manager and instead of sacking him, the FA were daft enough to give him an extra million as a golden handcuff while he was still under contract anyway.

Oh and by the way, I've never driven in a Formula One car before either but if I see a driver stall his car on the starting grid or crash into the tyre wall, then I reckon I can make a judgement call on it. You do get right that you don't have to have done something yourself or to even know how to do something yourself, to know when somebody has done it badly or wrong? If you want to disagree with what I have said then that's fine, but then argue your case with things to support it, and don't just go for the tired and lazy "show us ya medals then" approach. Sven was a failure with England and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded, and he then went on to be a failure at Man City and Leicester too. Oh and let's just say for example that Alex Ferguson was to later say much the same as I did about Sven, does that suddenly make my views right then? Call me old-fashioned but I go by what's being said, rather than who is doing the saying and if what's being said is accurate and valid, then that should be all that matters. So you can have that little life lesson for free, as well as never dry your mouth on the corner of somebody else's towel.

    • @@vduigdtgfffhhjufd2042 He did not only have to win the WC with England to be a success, he just needed to do better than flopping as badly as he did, where he did no better than and in some cases worse than previous managers but for a lot more money. I'm also not sure where the depleted England part comes in, considering he has the likes of: Beckham, Campbell, Carrick, Ash Cole, J Cole, Defoe, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Hargreaves, Keown, Lampard, McManaman, G Neville, Rooney, Scholes, Seaman, Sherringham, Terry and so on to pick from, and how many League winners from several countries and CL. Mind you, he also gave caps to James Beattie, Lee Bowyer, Sean Davis, David Dunn, Francis Jeffers, Anthony Gardner, Paul Konchesky, Zat Knight, Gavin McCann, Chris Powell, Michael Ricketts, Jlloyd Samuel and Alan Thompson too, so....... He also did not quite understand the concept of the best 11 players do not necessarily make the best first 11 team, so tried to crowbar in all of Scholes, Gerrard, Beckham and Lampard into the same team, with Lampard as one of the most attacking and highest scoring midfielders totally wasted in a defensive role at the bottom of a diamond, instead of being decisive and not so wishy-washy and choosing one of Scholes, Gerrard or Lampard as his main attacking midfielder and then choosing from the likes of Barry, Carrick or Hargreaves in the defensive or other roles for balance and have them playing in their normal positions, instead of Gerrard on the left wing......And it was even made easier for him too when 3 became 2 when Scholes retired from international football, yet Sven still couldn't grow a pair and make the call. Then you had the farce of him choosing a 16 or 7 year old Theo Walcott (can't quite remember) to warm the bench at the 2006 WC despite only having played 13 senior games and none of those were for Arsenal so no games at all then in the PL, whilst leaving behind proven PL goalscorers like Darren Bent, who was the top scoring English player in the PL that season, Andy Johnson and Jermain Defoe. OK so none were world beaters but at the time had to have been better choices than Walcott. Yet considering Rooney and Owen were starters and Crouch would come off the bench, he just wasted a selection that could have been used elsewhere......Even Vassell perhaps? And no I would not necessarily have expected Sven to win the PL with Vassell, although he picked him 22 times for England when he did not have to, so in his judgement rated him but I would have thought they should have been finishing above 9th, which was one place behind Portsmouth when Ciry failed to win 23 of their 38 games that season and managed to lose 13, when his players included Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Dietmar Hamann, Elano, Benjani and Daniel Sturridge. • You can see Sven's philosophy of playing his best players in the field in full swing here. He played Scholes as a LM for the same reason he selected Nedved as a LB in this XI, he was too good to be left out. Despite getting so much stick from the English fans & media, he was pretty good for England. Lost only 3 competitive matches inside 90 minutes during his lengthy tenure. Absolute top, top manager. Winning 3 trophies with Lazio in a single season during the best era of Serie A was probably his greatest achievement. One of the greatest managers in football history in my book.

    • SERVANT OF THE WATCHFUL you idiot England are the bottlers they haven’t won a trophy since 1966. Sven won the Serie A with Lazio against world class Juventus & Milan teams. He also won the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Cup Winners Cup & 2 Coppa Italia’s with Lazio as well as winning the UEFA Cup with Gothenburg. He was up against Capello, Lippi & Ancelotti who had much better teams. He also mentored Mancini & Simeone who have gone on to become good managers. You prefer Southgate who hasn’t won anything in his career he isn’t even as good Roberto Martinez who at least won the FA Cup with Wigan, what did Southgate do other than get relegated with Middlesbrough.

  • Always remember a match between Argentina and England and the Argentine fans gave Sven a standing ovation when he walked out of the tunnel. One of the commentators asked why they had done that and an Argentine pundit (cannot remember who it was ) said the Argentine fans loved and respected Sven because he was always pulling younger ladies lol
