When FC Barcelona won the 2009 Champions League with essentially a 4-3-3 formation featuring Lionel Messi as a 'false nine' (a withdrawn striker) much was written about Guardiola's tactical genius.
Of course, Pep didn't actually invent that system. Cruyff himself played as a false nine behind two wide strikers in the seventies for Ajax and Holland.
Here's a brilliant clip from 2004 in which Cruyff, with the help of a chalkboard, attempts to explain 'his' diamond formation.

  • So what he's saying is that everyone thinks diamond is 41212 but actually the diamond in that formation breaks and loses its shape during the match because the wingers have to defend. So he's suggesting a 433 that turns into a 343 with a wingback pushing up and leaving three at the back, leaving one of the opposing strikers forced to do fuck all and get bollocked by his coach or to track back a dozen times and get tired as fuck. In the 433 to 343 the diamond shifts but always keeps its shape. Genius

And now when Enrique has player like Suarez that is striker he brought that player in ST position. And this is just an example how legend Cruyff influenced Barcelona. Heynckess won both the Bundesliga and the Champions League with Bayern Muncih and Guardiola took the team the year later and was unable to win the Champions League despite having the same team than Heynckess. Heynckess also won the Champions League with 2 different teams (Madrid and Bayern) while Guardiola won 0 Champions outside Barça. Ancelotti won the Champions League in 2 differnt teams (Milan and Real Madrid), smoething Guardiola never achieved. In fact, Real Madrid in 2013-2014 played the best football at club level ever, destroying Guardiola's Bayern 0-4 at their home stadium in the Champions League. Guardioal won the Champions League in 2009 thanks to robbering Chelsea, the referee did not call 3 or 4 clear penalties. With VAR, Barça would have never defeated Chelsea in the 2009 Champions League. Then you get Zidane, who is the only mister in the hsitory of football to win 3 consecutive Champions League titles, smoething Guaridola never did. And Mourinho won the Champions League on 2 teams (Oporto and Inter), soemthing Guardiola never achieved. But because mourinho had really bad seasons in CHelsea and Manchester, I would say he is euqally good as Guardiola.

      @jameswalker6864@jameswalker68644 жыл бұрын
    • @@jameswalker6864 getting trophies and coaching a team for the betterment of players depends upon certian things n probably very different things imo . When Zidane won his consecutive league titles ? Except for first season, the football he played was shit n there's no denying fact. That man was on par with Valverde if u analyse their games , both used Messi n Ronaldo as their main target n nothing more , winning a UCL is often based on luck rather the quality of players n there r multiple examples on that , talkin' abt Gaurdiola , his management time is just 10 years while the others been on the same page with more than 25+ years . The difference of 15 years is huge , it's a not like Pep's never achieved anything with Barca n city , last year he won almost every trophy except UCL n lost to Tottenham coz of luck rather than football tactically , Talkin' abt Winning UCL with different teams , we both know this season City has the best chance of winning it . As u said Barca won coz of the robbery 😂 ik they did n I agree but what abt the robberies made by real ? Scoring an offside equaliser against Atletico Madrid in the 92+ minuted , Zidane couldn't hold the league title nor the CDR. When u talk abt all the other things. Why don't u talk abt he's the only manager in the world with 2 Trebles ? of we talking abt Humiliation games , the oke that comes to my mind is Barca vs Bayern 7:0 coz that was the only time when a team who played better football on the pitch than Pep's team . Last 2 Ucls won by zidane were probably coz of UEFA so when u accuse Barca of that ? I think u should say the same thing for Real madird as well . Incase u don't know , real already won 5-6 Ucls in a row , I don't knw the year. SAF won just 2 Ucls with United ? One of the greatest teams ever so according to ur logic SAF is nothing 😂. We both know Pep could have achieved more if he had stayed at Barca but he moved . Then we have the thing that Pep took over Bayern which had won UCL in the previous season , well Pep has set his standards so high that people wants him to win the UCL every single year n winning that as I already said depends upon different factors not just on management , Barca before he took control was not a world-class team at all while they're below 3 in Laliga , UCL campaign was shit n so were the other campaigns n in 2007-8 season Barca didn't win anything while in the very next season by letting the likes of deco , Ronaldinho go ? He won every possible trophy. But some people just criticize , when he was at Barca - people said it's an easy league n everybody can win it with that team , when he was at Bayern - people said anybody can win it with that team but he didn't win ucl so he's a flow n not to mention he didn't spend anything in good amount there as well as in Barca n these were the times people said he can't win league in p.l coz it's hard but he won 2 seasons straight 🙂 n then we've people who say he won coz of the money ? Really ? United has spent the same amount as city but where r the trophies ? Liverpool spent 600M but couldn't win a single p.l ? Another thing I prefer Pep over anybody is how he utilizes new talent n creates them. I don't think u even saw when porto won the ucl , teams at that time were next to nothing n he played the same game there as well by parking a plane . Sayin Mourinho is on the same page as Pep is a crime lmao and one more thing that I forgot to add is , when Pep coached Barca ? Spain won the w.c ( Spain's golden days started when pep started to coach them n ended when he left Barca , Germany won the cup with same tactics too ) both del Bosque n J.Low didn't change anything in the team n played the same way as Pep was playing coz Germany National team = almost Bayern n Spain's national team at the time had 9 Barca players in the starting eleven. U can see the inspiration there , upcoming generation of Managers would dig for Pep more than anybody.

Both Bielsa and Guardiola like to play the +1 defensive system that Cruyff suggests in this clip without sacrificing the diamond in the middle. If playing against 3 forwards, then a 4-3-3 (false 9) system is implemented to have an extra man in defense. Then playing against 2 forwards gives the freedom to play a 3-4-3 (diamond) system.

    • actually martinez in the benatia position and boateng in the current martinez position. The problem was that the team was too ofeensive. WHen attacking both martinez and boateng would act as holding midfielders leaving the team vunerable at the back. I also noticed that the team was better with coman on the right as he is a true winger. Cruyffs tactics (or peps tactics) needed the winger to stay out wide to put in crosses to muller and lewa

In reality both guys are probably right to some extent. To cruyff the fluid diamond is a team based on the diamond, where the diamond is maintained and the team shifts to maintain it, while the other guy (dont know his name) thinks the diamond can be broken out of and into during the match depending on the necessity of the situation. Both approaches probably have a great deal of merit to them.

  • This video is incredible, I wish it could be longer. The amount of information and how the diamond actually work is just sublime. Either using 4-4-2(double pivot)-playmaker gameplay or using 4-3-3(Wide)-box2box gameplay. The key is wingback and the false 9 that change the whole complexity of the game, and of course the rondo training.🤣 Whichever formation used, it will end up becoming 3-4-3(Total football/tiki-taka) when attacking. Just pure genius.

Either Busquets drops back and the full backs push up, and suddenly you've changed from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3, or more rarely Pique pushes forward with the full backs moving towards the center, and you get a similar result. This is why people say Cruyff created the modern day Barcelona, if some people didn't understand or weren't aware of his team: they're using all of his principles, 20 years later. Along side his great eye for talent (debuted the likes of bergkamp and van basten) and not to forget his famous quotes (Every disadvantage has got it's advantage) In spain his use of "uno momento dado" became so common, That it got accepted into the spanish dictionary. Cruijff learnt his trade from Michels, they passed it on together at Barcelona, but Cruijff really installed it there when he became a coach. Everyone built on a bit on that style - Wenger, Guardiola. And Ferguson, Ancellotti, Capello had their own ideas. There were greats in past like Guttmann, Chapman... The dutch explanation btw is way more funnier than the english translation. Connecting the tactical brilliance with the simple down to earth streetlogic, its just epic. Too soon he left, we miss him.

  • A year and two days since he physically left us, but his mind stays with us forever. Genius.

  • Too many coaches and players think that a formation is a fixed pattern that the players must keep. They call it "shape". A formation is just a division of responsibilities. The physical patterns on the field are fluid. Football is just pressure and support. Pressure when they have the ball, and support when you have it. And the best way to support Johan when he had the ball? As he said: "Get the hell out of his way!" Except he was to polite to say hell.

  • General formation involving the diamond: 4-1-2-1-2 (4-4-2 diamond) Cruyff's diamond: 4-1-2-3 (4-3-3 with a false 9)

    • Nope. Cruyff explains it, his preferred starting formation is 3-1-2-1-3, with 3 full defenders at the back, having them pull wide as necessary, and two real wingers up front, making sure that you have triangles everywhere on attack. In defense the DM can fall back to the back line, giving the wide defender time to track back. In fact, he preferred playing a real defender in that DM position in front of the back three (Ronald Koeman), who was capable of dropping back even further and become a sweeper. And typically Cruyff, he didn't care about speed, that DM/Libero was expected to use his brain to position intelligently on both attack and defense. Smart positioning to free up the defenders and provide a starting point for attacks was his ideal.
