  • Key principles of Stoicism: Dichotomy of Control: Stoicism teaches that some things are within our control (our thoughts, choices, and actions) while others are not (external events, other people's actions, and circumstances). Stoics believe that focusing on what is within our control leads to inner tranquility, while accepting what is beyond our control helps us avoid unnecessary suffering. Virtue as the Highest Good: According to Stoicism, the ultimate good in life is the development of moral and intellectual virtues. These virtues include wisdom, justice, courage, temperance, and moderation. Stoics believe that by cultivating these virtues, individuals can live a good and fulfilling life. Acceptance of Nature: Stoicism encourages individuals to align their will with the natural order of the universe. This means accepting the impermanence of things, embracing change, and recognizing that suffering and setbacks are inevitable parts of life. Negative Visualization: Stoics practice negative visualization, which involves contemplating the worst-case scenarios to develop gratitude for what one currently possesses. By imagining the loss of something or someone, individuals can learn to appreciate and value them more fully. Amor Fati: Amor fati, or "love of fate," is a Stoic concept that encourages individuals to embrace and love their fate, whatever it may be. Stoics believe that everything that happens, even hardships and misfortunes, is part of a larger plan and should be accepted without resistance. Tranquility of Mind: Stoicism aims to cultivate inner peace and tranquility by freeing individuals from negative emotions such as anger, fear, and anxiety. By practicing self-control, self-discipline, and detachment from external outcomes, Stoics strive to maintain a calm and balanced state of mind.

    • It is confusing. Because you hear the quote "you don't have control over your mind & emotions, but you can however choose how to respond to them." In essence it's true we don't know how thoughts enter our mind and how much of that is involuntarily, science hasn't caught up yet. You think about something and you feel good, but another thought comes up and it make you feel bad. Why? Because some rules you agreed on of what is good and bad? For example, in Europe burping after eating is rude and people might look at you with anger, but it is appreciated in China because it means you liked the food. So you can also say "whatever happens, good or bad, i will always choose a positive interpretation." It sounds simplistic but if you just practice that often enough you start to believe that and it becomes your new belief. So then we cán control our thoughts and emotions if we can deliberately insert new thoughts which create positive emotions.

  • Unironically, I may have adopted stoicism unintentionally. Being a person born in the fine line of poor and middle-class, I've learned how to accept the life I was given. I recognize my situation and instead focus on the gifts rather than the misfortunes we had. It is not as if I don't feel sad about it, I do. But I don't dwell on it and I just wish for the best. I am also a very timid person, often times I get dragged to my friends and other people's shenanigans. I can't do anything about it, I may feel annoyed or pissed off, but I don't let it affect me. In a way, it is kind of the same as the voluntary discomfort exercise. And to be clear with you all, I am not saying I can't feel emotions, I can feel just as much pain, anguish, sadness, happiness, etc. as all you guys. It is just that my standing in life has led me to learn how to control my emotions better than others. I remember being a kid frustrated about other kids having things that I don't, I had a talk with my dad about it, we cried and reconciled. My point being, is the fact that I unknowingly adopted a similar mindset to Stoicism might just prove that Stoicism really works.

  • Genuine stoicism is not about feeling nothing, it's about feeling everything and thinking nothing of it. A lot of people put on an act of stoicism in the form of "I'm not upset, I do not care, I'm not bothered, I'm not emotional." The point of the philosophy is not to act like you do not care or tell yourself and others you are not affected. The point is that as a human you will care about certain things, but you shouldn't care about the fact that you do care. Look at the Zeno example. He said, you cannot control the things that happen to you, but you can control how you react to them. Does that mean that you must put on a facade that nothing happened? No. It means you accept what has happened, you feel what you feel, and then you carry on despite that. If you're angry then you're angry. If you're sad then you're sad. Acting like you're not, is not stoicism. It's more self delusion. Accepting the fact that you're angry or sad, and then leaving it at that and moving forward, not letting those feelings affect you beyond simply feeling them, THAT is the philosophy of Zeno. He didn't say he unbreakable. There is no such thing in existence. He said, it is better to bend than to break, and accepting the fact that life is going to bend you plenty, and accepting the fact that you don't have to think anything of it, is the essence of stoicism. I prefer Musashi's philosophy myself. Stoicism is something that can be put on when it's not properly understood. The "I'm rubber you're glue" understanding instead of the "if it sticks then it sticks" understanding. Musashi's philosophy is more concrete. It's about what you do, and do not do. Not what you think or do not think. It's genuine by definition.

Nor can you attempt to cite logic or reason because any lack or presence of logic or reason would be predetermined and set in stone. So the will in your words, in a world without will, would be absolutely nothing at all. Just noise on the wind, without purpose, influence or ultimate meaning. That's what saying "free will doesn't exist" ultimately implies. After all, how can you change anyone's mind, or anyone change they're own mind, if they've been predestined never to do so? So I told the creator that despite the lack of traffic the video has seen, it very much helped someone who needed it, and so the video was high value to at least one person.

  • Pretty thankful to this video. I have suffered from anxiety for about 3 years, and the reason why I always feel anxious is that I keep being afraid of the things I cannot control like the past and the future. And I always blame myself for my failures even if they were caused by the others or some uncontrollable factors, which is the fact that I didn't notice for these years. This video is really inspiring for me, especially I'm still struggling with mental diseases. Maybe I can try to practise to be stoic, and just let the things go.

  • Stoicism is understanding that everything in life is neutral, unless we give it meaning. The goal is to just experience everything with all our senses. There's no need to add meaning to this experience. No need to judge, label, or define it. If you can't help but add meaning, add positive and colorful meaning to it.

    • I can't agree more. When I was 15 I had a really tough time with addiction, but I overcame it. Over time I developed the philosphy explained in the video on my own. I began thinking in the exact same way as stoics without even knowing that's what they're called. My first understanding was that we percieve reality through our senses and these senses create emotion, but emotion is simply controled by the brain and the chemical reactions that happen there. So, since we are able to control our brain, we can actually manipulate emotion and perception in a way that benefits us the most or at least hurts us the least. After that, I developed almost every other idea showed in the vid. By the time I was 16 I felt like I have already made the transition between a child and an adult in maturity. Every day I felt a bigger and bigger difference between me and my peers, because I felt that they still treated everything as careless kids and hadn't realized a lot of things. Now I am so glad I found this video and this comment so that I can learn more about Stoicism!

  • I've suffered 2 house fires in my life, both due to electrical faults. Both of which I lost everything, over 10 years ago. I'd never heard of stocisism until recently. But I guess life has taught me this lesson the hard way. The things I've lost were mostly replaceable, except for family photos. However, I've found myself talking and reminiscing about those lost moments with my family recently, and I've come to realise, the photos didn't contain the memories, we do. As hard as this was to deal with at the time, it's made me the person I am today. Very little phases me. I want less in life, I'm more grateful for what I have. And ultimately, I'm happier. I don't wish this on anyone, but life has a strange way of teaching you what you need to know. Good luck in life too everyone.

  • I always wondered, what was wrong with me. I always felt unhappy, feeling like life is useless and unlogical. One day, I downloaded an app called "The Stoic". I opened it and read the first few citations from Marcus Aurelius and so on. Immediately, I understood that the way of them thinking reflects exactly my point of view on everything we can control - ourselves. The way we treat ourselves and others around us is not the key for binding to people, yet it is an important part of being happy - and making other people around one happy as well. Thanks to the philosophers from 2000 years ago, I finally understood who I am: a Stoic. I am not confused anymore and very proud of who I have become, without knowing Stoicsm at all.

I used to be insecure af, started doing self-improvement, and got the friends and random people being attracted to me. i developed an imposter syndrome because I though I was being fake for learning how to be better perceived, then I met a girl I like who helped me with fixing that and some other insecurities which came with the self-improvement journey, after her I made a lot more connections and I began doing even better things for myself like reading and overall be more on a schedule to be more efficient, got motivated again to workout after a 2 years break and now for the first time I actually enjoy it, BUT I don't have her love or attention and I'll probably vanish from her life by the next year even if she's kinda enjoying my company currently, just because she's moving and also she's such a type of person to let go easily even if she says she's not, simply because she's not interested in the things "she does not let go of easily". And that is literally the only reason I've been sad recently and I knew beforehand that it probably wouldn't go my way. And I used to say to myself that I was happy with just ever knowing her even she'd vanish from my life in the future but now that it's slowly happening it's not as good as I thought it would be. I am still grateful for her but I really dislike the fact that we probably won't ever keep in touch after a year.

The proposed solution to this is tweaking your mindset so that you're more content with the uncontrollable nature of life, which includes situations such as yours... However, as someone who's been doing a lot recently to overcome depression, improve myself, and be more stoic, I think that trying to not be upset over failed romantic plans or failed friendships is one of the hardest parts of stoicism. It seems so difficult to be callous to the pain of a failing romantic relationship, especially if finding a partner is one of your long-term goals.

Instead of accepting what I experienced, I fought it for years and found myself right where I started time and time again. My mindset shifted from an endless struggle to the nihilistic mindset of nothing matters which made my struggles easier by negating value I allowed struggles to possess, but I still felt that way of life was unhealthy. It was then that I realized how I felt was something I could learn to control.

I had a day where I doubt everything around me, and everything I could and did. I then used that hard time to make it a motivation. I have lost 25KG/55 LBS in 3-4 months. Instead of giving up and let myself be consumed by it, I build it into something that I could move on from and learn from. Learning to be healthy, learning to eat well, working out and taking care about my body. I still have a good bit to go, but I’m glad I had this happen. I learned not to take my body for granted, to focus on me and learn from this experience. Many other things have also happend in my life, but I think that is a good example. I didn’t know I could relate with the ideals of stoicism untill this video. Thank you.

So you get something that will allow you to improve your progress in this area. • When I originally came to the US, I was put 2 HS grades behind because of things out of my control. I suffered a lot, cried pretty much every night with the anxious idea that I would graduate high school at 20, not because of my own doing, but because of the system. I was very depressed, and would constantly have panic attacks in the bathroom stalls. One day I ran out of school and walked for 8 hours in the winter, thinking and contemplating. I stopped at a gas station and I opened Pinterest, and a quote stood out to me: "You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strenght". I saw it was from Meditations by M.A, I went home, and for the first time in 3 years I picked up my old journal, after writing the situation I was in, the reasons, my feelings, and re-reading it, I felt renewned. I was draining my spirit for something outside of my hands. The only thing I could do was to either find a solution or accept where I was. After that, my brain changed. I tried to work out a solution, preparing myself mentally for it not working. But it did. I graduated at 18 like I wanted, and now, anger no longer conquers me.

After experiencing the first significant emotional pain and heartbreak in my life, I found my way to this video, on the usual meaningless late night youtube binge, thanks to your narration and choice of music, the video calmed me. Yet it did much more than that, it was the spark that led me to further research stoicism and led me to firstly get back into reading, but to read the lectures of epictetus and the reminders of marcus aurelius. These books helped me get through some short term emotional pain. But the effect on my mindset and view on life in general has been bigger than I ever could have imagined. And more than I could explain in a short youtube comment. So tonight I come back to this video, and will watch it a changed young man, and a better listener. So I express my thanks to this video and of course to fate aswell.

Every breath, cracker, smile and ray of sunshine fills us with more vitality and life than a new car, a diamond ring or designer handbag. To begin to learn to live with less, spend some time each and every day writing down or at least contemplating what you’re grateful for. Chances your daily list will be full of the smaller, life-giving joys and simple pleasures rather than large material items.
