    • @@m8jorerror220 Yup. My own personal experience with Carly mirrors the many negative reviews on TrustPilot. My issues aren't so much to do with the product itself, it's more the poor (i.e. total lack of) customer service, expensive auto-renewals with no reminders and a refusal to engage in terms of refunding the auto-renewal transaction. The 'customisation' functionality is pretty much limited to BMWs and just how few marques are supported by functionality is conveniently NOT made clear.

    • @@m8jorerror220 Carly only reads data from ECU's and Control modules, it cannot make up stored faults. Highly likely you found historic faults on first scan that had not been cleared in the past, once cleared they will not return. all faults are mileage stamped for future reference. this is why it is suggested to first clear all faults then scan car after a few days of use to determine actual issues. Hope this helps.

Everyone ought to be wary of this when buying bikes/quads & farm stuff anyway, Rory just isn't the target market as most of the usual buyers wouldn't care to look into further or would be aware of what they have.

  • Watching this motorcycle being taken away on a huge transporter truck brought back memories of 2011, when I went bankrupt. I was told by the official receiver that I would have to give up my 'project' Yamaha XJ600 because it was seen as a luxury item, and would be auctioned off to help towards my creditors. I tried to argue the case, and offered to pay market value to retain it, but the official receiver was having nothing of that! Come the bleak day that the bike was seized. Some guy in a massive low loader turns up, that looks like it could haul off a double decker bus, and when I showed him the bike he was seizing, he said to me, 'how much did you offer to buy back this bike?' I replied '£150' as that was probably all that bike was worth at that time. The truck driver then responded 'It's costing the official receiver four times that much for me to recover it!' Go Figure!

Where the bankruptee gets that money from is their problem. What the Receiver does not do is leave the Bankruptee totally destitute, as they have to retain enough income to live off. They will only take money away from any disposable income that the bankruptee has, i.e., any money eft over after all living costs have been paid such as rent, rates, heating, food, clothing etc.

They took his car. A year later they told him that his car is not one of the shady deals so he can come pick it up. Since it was sitting in some lot without being started or moved for a year the battery was dead but the bonnet was a bit tricky to open so it took him almost a full day to get into it and start the car. On his way home a hog ran out of the woods where my friend was driving home (about 5 miles away from home) and the car ended up totalled. • Rory was right in that as the previous owner was paid out for the stolen bike, the ownership of then transfers to the insurance company. If the stolen bike's ever found (as it was here) the police will seize it and return it to the rightful owner (the insurer) to then do with what they want. As the bike has been tampered with, they will probably have it crushed as there is no way to sell it on considering all the VIN markings stamped on the bike belong to a completely different bike. The best that could happen is the insurer sells it to a trusted breaker to break it down for spare parts, then crush the frame.

    • Well, you say that, but the people in the comments who know their KTM models knew it wasn't right... if a log book says a bike is one model, & the actual car or bike is a much later model, cloning is actually the usual explanation. Probably worth just checking out a photo of the model what you are buying claims to be to ensure that whatever you buy looks like that actual thing, & not something else - you don't kneed to know anything about what you are buying to do that, & if the two things don't match then you can walk away, unless the person selling can somehow _prove_ that it actually is the same thing... which they probably can't. A friend of mine ended up with a 1.9 Pug Gti that claimed it was a 1.6 when he was in his early 20s, falling for a similar scam... that didn't end well for him...

  • Irrelevant, but true: in my home country Hungary 🇭🇺 you MUST bring every used motor vehicle to a paid vehicle check before you get the new V5 on your name. It’s mandatory by law. The cost is £35-50/vehicle, it’s called: Eredetiség vizsgálat. I worked 5+ years in that position where we checked the primary and secondary VIN numbers, engine number, and other hidden information (not including ECU data). We had metal X-ray to filter out the hand made or welded VINs, but mostly based on many years of experience and VIN databases. This is how they try to filter out many of the cloned Eastern European cars, vans and bikes. The failed vehicles are impounded and investigated by the police. They got automatic silent alert while the car is still in the test centre. (On a side note: that’s why the obvious clones are never got to the test centres, and stuck on the name of the previous owner forever).

  • So back in the 1960s in America trailer manufacturers didn't have to put a unique VIN(Vehicle Identification Number) on every trailer; they used 1 VIN per week or so. Fast forward to the 1990s and I bought my Dad a little used 1960s pop-up camper in California. I'd bought it on a Saturday from a rancher, and it's now Monday morning(ie, about 48 hours). We took it to do the papers at the DMV(Department of Motor Vehicles). They ran the VIN, and it came back stolen. Next thing I know I'm handcuffed in front of my three children by CHP(California Highway Patrol) and DMV is calling to have the trailer seized. Neither the CHP nor the DMV would listen to my explanation. That's when Dad stepped in. Question 1 to the DMV supervisor: "when and where was it stolen?" His answer: "two days ago in Virginia Beach, Virginia". Right then the CHP officers started getting a bit uncomfortable, as Virginia Beach is just shy of 3000 miles away from where we were(Lodi, California) and is a 40-45 hour non-stop drive. Question 2 to the DMV supervisor: "what is the description of the trailer?" His answer: "motorcycle trailer with ramp." Now they're really worried, as they are looking at a fully functional pop-up tent trailer. Dad tells them about the "1 VIN for multiple frames" process as well, but they refuse to believe us. They call the Sergeant, who calls the Officer on Duty. As their Lieutenant arrives, a man about my Dad's age comes over and shakes hands all around. He introduces himself as a retired CHP Captain and former head of the VIN inspection department. The Officers and DMV agent begin explaining about the stolen trailer thing. Before they can even finish the retired Captain raised his hand and asked the exact same questions my father had. After they answered, he asked the Officers if they truly thought that I could've stolen the trailer, modified it, and driven it across country in 48 hours. Now they're REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE. The Lieutenant, the DMV supervisor, and the retired Captain step away for a few moments. When they return, the Lieutenant directs the officers to remove the handcuffs and tells me that my Dad will have his new title and plates as soon as DMV can get them assigned. Although everyone handled themselves professionally and with courtesy, I lost most of my faith in 'civilian' government officials that day.

    • Yes, the check on lots of these sites is only against a registration or vin. It in no way guarantees that those numbers are on the correct vehicle, that is why none of the companies will pay compensation as promised if you end up with stolen vehicles after buying it based on their checks. They simply try and get out of it by saying the details were from a third party and they're not responsible for the accuracy. Read the T&Cs and don't use these sites. You need to get a proper check done by someone that can make sure the vehicle matches the displayed identity and then look through history. Sadly a lot of people lie about Apps as they are on affiliate promotions offering codes and taking a cut for each person that signs up. The first check was for a numberplate and vin, NOT to check they were on the correct vehicle as the App doesn't know! The second check was for the details extracted from the ECU, which belonged to a reported stolen bike. Two different sets of details. So this proves Apps are of NO use to confirm the true identity of a vehicle, they only provide a collection of info from other databases.

At least it exposed why you should never rely on these sites. The second check was for the ECU extracted info which showed the true identity, when checked it was found to be stolen. You need to FIRST confirm the correct identity of the vehicle, then check in the VIN and Registration plate match. Then you can delve in to the history knowing the vehicle you have is the correct one. So many make this mistake as they don't know how to check a vehicle identity. • are you not gonna try and get your money back from martin for selling you a stolen bike? i mean you’ve got it all on camera so there’s clear evidence of the sale.

    • Martin didn’t know it was stolen. He also paid money for it a few years back in good faith.

  • For the ones saying that Car Vertical didn't got the correct info, please watch the video properly, the VIN in the frame is from a clean bike so of course will pass Car Vertical checks. The VIN from the stolen bike is the one in the ECU that Car Vertical actually said it was from a stolen bike, and the only way to acess that one VIN is with a proper bike diagnostic machine that KTM used as they are not out in the wild as much as car ones. So actually Car Vertical worked very well.

  • My 2020 390 Duke was stolen back in september 2021. Found abandoned in a backyard a week or so later. Heavily trashed (spray painted everywhere), but mechanically sound. Haven't been able to fix the spray paint (mostly on the engine) because too expensive but I have it back. Hope the original owner was insured.

  • Why don't all vehicle manufacturers have provision to flag a vehicle as stolen. I had a VW Touareg that was one of the first keyless entry thefts, and thay said they had no provision for it. As most manufacturers have a global database, at a stroke it would reduce desirability of stolen goods.

  • The VIN number is nowadays scraped / engraved with static hardened needle (static = it's non-rotating tool), mounted on robotic hand in an armature with x and y linear motors... It's definitely not punched these days...
