(Feb. 21, 2021) Former four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner returned from his two-year hiatus from boxing with a unanimous decision victory over Jovanie Santiago in the main event of Saturday night’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast, live on SHOWTIME from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
The popular, must-see attraction Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs), who last fought against the legend Manny Pacquiao in January 2019, started slowly but used the second half of the fight to surge ahead on the judges’ scorecards. The fight was scored 116-111, 117-110 and 115-112 and all three judges had Broner winning rounds seven through ten.
Cincinnati’s Broner landed just 35 of 138 punches in the opening six rounds of the fight while the previously undefeated Santiago (14-1-1, 10 KOs) landed 93 of 305 during the same stretch. At the end of the fourth round, Santiago was deducted a point for a punch that landed after the bell. Over the final six frames, Broner landed 63 of 300 punches while Santiago landed 114 of 392. Broner was most active in the ninth round when he connected on 14 of 38 punches. Though outworked over the entirety of the fight, Broner landed quality punches over the second half of the bout which earned him the victory.
SHOWTIME’s unofficial scorer Steve Farhood scored the fight 114-113 in favor of the Puerto Rican Santiago, much to the chagrin of Broner. Santiago, on the other hand, was not surprised by the judges’ scorecards.

  • In my opinion the commentator overlooked key moments when Broner was throwing punches and did not comment on them. Even the slow motion instant replays where Broner was punching the commentator said nothing to acknowledge the work Broner was doing. Listening to the commentary and watching the fight it appears to me that there was a significant biased against Adrien Broner. Whether it was intentional or not who knows. I didn’t have a favorite in this fight. I just wanted to see a good fight but but In my opinion the commentating didn’t seem fair.

    @devinmitchell3718@devinmitchell3718 Жыл бұрын
    • Wasn’t a knock down, but close. Broner should have utilized the jab more as Santiago was coming in rather using the jab to keep him at a distance. Broner also should have kept throwing more uppercut’s. But he definitely won this fight being the more technical puncher than Santiago. Santiago was basically bull rushing his way in. Reason why I honestly think Broner should have kept popping the jab out there for him to run into it.

    • People -- myself included sometimes, I admit -- just want to see AB lose, but this was just a close fight. Broner took at least 6 rounds, and that point deduction saved him imo. I had it 114-113 AB this time around, and I've watched it twice now. It was thoroughly unimpressive, again, but Broner probably edged it. Santiago much more active and landing more frequently, but Broner landing much higher quality blows. AB's lack of workrate is a serious issue for him as far as scorecards go. Sometimes it just seems like he doesnt even wanna fight.

  • Something is terribly wrong with AB. He's lost his fire. He doesn't let his hands go. He's totally unmotivated is what I see. It looks like he's not listening to his corner, like he doesn't want to get hit or something. If nothing else WE KNOW THAT IF YOU WANT TO WIN. YOUR production and accuracy must impress the judges more than your opponent. He's lost it. It being whatever it was that made him go undefeated until he wasn't anymore. Very disappointing.

  • They figured out brokers style. He’s too committed to counter punching and he’s kinda come forward or stay in the middle of the ring kinda fighters if you not really throwing it won’t let him get into Rhythm. Then it become a boring chess match with one fighter throwing very little because he only want to counter and the other throwing very little cause he don’t want to get countered… Broner would take out guys like this in 5 if he was actually aggressive

  • This announcer sees every punch from Santiago but can’t seem to see when Broner lands. He sounds bias. He just keeps complaining that he’s not throwing enough, Broner has nice combinations in spurts but that’s not his game he likes to pop shots like Mayweather. And the ref can’t tell boxers to stop talking, that apart of the fight, it’s the mental portion.
