This is what 'Jeopardy!' host Alex Trebek is really like
CULVER CITY, California - We recently had the opportunity to visit the set of "Jeopardy!" on a taping day and got to talk to the iconic host of the show, Alex Trebek.
Trebek allowed us to chronicle his entire daily routine, from his morning production meeting with the "Jeopardy!" staff, to sitting in the makeup chair, to the actual taping of the shows. Five episodes are filmed on each taping day, and there are approximately six taping days every month.
We got to interview Trebek in a few different settings, but we also got to record his interaction with the studio audience. During each commercial break, Trebek takes questions from the audience. It's during these segments that you'll get to see a side of the iconic host that you rarely see on the show itself.

He filmed shows up to two weeks before his death. His skills never diminished, the show never lost popularity, and he never stopped hosting it. RIP, Alex
Ten days before his death
Alex dies, his glasses become garbage!
His retirement involved hosting Jeopardy to an extent. If Alex Trebek wanted me to understand that some people have their own version of retirement I would have to get used to it and it’s not just because of TV.
"I prefer simpler things in life, like drinking" -Alex Trebek 1940-2020
having died of pancreatic cancer, this did not age well
"I prefer simpler things in life. Like drinking." is now my motto for life.
Bodenlose Dosenhose nice alcoholic, congratulations. You are apart of the average marvel dc comic loving world that exists. Drink away, you know you do it due to your lack of self confidence in social situations. Keep up with the jones’ your doing great!
Nick r/wooosh
@@johnstamos8403 How do you get down off that horse? Do you keep a ladder on you, or are you extremely tall?
He has pancreatic cancer. Stage 4.
@@johnstamos8403 Come off it, drinking has been a global pastime since nearly the dawn of civilization. Hence the backlash against prohibition (regardless of "self-confidence"). Now, discussion about composure and drinking is a different story.
“I have a brown thumb”.... woah alex I didn’t know u was freakin like that
You silly silly man, LoL
I try to do handiwork around the house, too. I have a black and blue thumb.
So you are sayin' he's been playing the rusty trombone?
Your username makes this comment even funnier lol. Fuckin grade A shit right here
nut master he always thumbs me in the ass 😪
I was so worried that I was going to have to hate Alex after watching this. Im glad that is not the case. He seems quite pleasant.
Y’all should listen to Howard Stern show when Alex is on it. His choice of words and convos will make a sailor, trucker or whoever blush.
Guess again. He was being filmed. That's why he was being "pleasant."
bernard brown he's always being filmed though
No he’s an ass
I was on the show in 2012. He’s America’s cranky, but cool dad. During commercial breaks, when he’s not answering questions from the audience, he sings to himself, but he’s wearing a mike, so everyone can sing it. I was rocking a decent jewfro then, and he sang to himself how I had the same hair he had in the ‘70s. That was fun.
He looks really good to be 78. He still looks the same as he did 20 years ago... except the hair of course..
76, but yeah he looks really good. Not a day over 55. I can't believe that he doesn't work out.

Happy belated to the one and only Jeopardy host!
Um, look up "Art Fleming".
Turning 79 this year.
How does he keep such a straight face? I love it!
A lot of patience, a lot of practice ( a million questions from the audience ); but I suppose if I were wanting to be flippant - "the botox".
Professionalism, Through & Through.
He's Canadian...it probably froze that way..years ago. hahahha
this hurts so much after hearing of his passing, rest in peace ❤️❤️❤️
You never retired... you still managed to host even when staring death in the face, and amid the Covid pandemic... Rest in peace, Mr. Trebek. A legend. I can't imagine anyone else hosting Jeopardy. You will be sorely missed. :'(
He was earning money for the funeral in a way that most wouldn’t think of doing.
He really does seem just like a nice normal (albeit very charismatic) bloke.
Josey Bojangles lol, you’re still trolling on this video. I can hear that faint “...please clap” behind all of your comments.
Constant Throwing ur a fucking bloke.
Josey Bojangles well I only take it in the ass. And calling me a cig as an insult is rather backwards.
Josey Bojangles There there, don’t delete some comments but leave others
Constant Throwing great guy .. very surprising
He's totally opposite from his stuffy, know-it-all elite TV persona. Very warm, funny and engaging. The fact he said "thank you" to the make-up lady indicates he really treats all people with thoughtfulness. Most stars don't even speak to the crew, unless they are barking orders at them or cussing them out. Trebek seems like a decent guy, far beyond needing others to polish his ego.
He knew he was on camera when he said "thank you," keep that in mind.
Seriously...have you ever met him ?
Watch him when he hosted Classic Concentration. He was much looser and 30 years younger. He was still a pro but he would joke with the contestants and was really chill.
He still is the know-it-all elite TV persona in the afterlife, as well as in real life off camera.
I just came here right after i found out Alex had cancer.I'm praying for you.
Same. Sad news, Im heartbroken 😣💔
Hos joke at the end didn't age particularly well.
I love Alex Trebek... I pray for his recovery.. may the Lord keep him to do Jeopardy till 2030 or so
He is dead
@@nathanelgeorge6369 oh man this comment aged badly
I met Alex while I was in the Marines. He came out to Camp Kinder on Okinawa in 05 or 06. Super nice guy. Thank you for that.
As of this writing, Alex has been renewed to host Jeopardy! through 2020. That will be 36 seasons. Such a hard-working man.
You know he only works one day a week... All five shows for the week are taped on Saturdays.
@@asuicuneontheobx823 they did, he said it in his announcement that he had pancreatic cancer
@@asuicuneontheobx823 Unfortunately, he won't get that chance because he died on 11/8/2020.
Alex is amazing to have hosted a show that has been that successful for so long, while the television formats all over have change so much. "Jeopardy!" is one of the few holdovers from the great game show era that began in the mid-seventies. There's nothing finer than information and knowledge. Thanks for providing so much of them to Alex and the entire crew of "Jeopardy!"
Don't ever retire, Alex.
he didn’t
He didn't, he's still hosting in the afterlife.
He's quick thinking. I like quick thinking.
Gee, why don’t you just marry him?
Judges? Sorry, Alex is already married.

@@YahirGarciaChannel lol
I cant imagine anyone else besides Alex hosting Jeopardy. However, I said the same thing about Bob Barker hosting The Price is Right.
Caged the only way it will work is, the new host has to be awesome enough to usher in their own new era. As you were mentioning for example, Price is Right. They picked Drew Carey, a guy who had hosted shows before and demonstrated great charisma and poise. A strong enough character to move from a "Bob Barker era" to the "Drew Carey" era.
Ditto
Sadly, now that will be the case.
Drew sucks on the show
Ken Jennings, Rich Fields, Robin Roberts, etc.
Love this guy, a real enigmatic genius, a true original, and a real man's man.
Shiftless Lazycrat just curious but what does being a “mans man” mean to you?
Be Strong Alex! We are here to support you
Had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Trebek back in the early 2000's at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. He came through my vendor booth, asking some very specific questions about plasma display technology. The whole time we were talking, I kept thinking to myself "I know this guy", but I couldn't figure out from where. I had to sneak a look at his badge before I realized why his voice sounded so familiar, and then it all clicked. It was during that brief period where he had shaved off his mustache, before growing it back again (anyone here remember when he finally shaved it off for keeps?), so he really did look completely anonymous at the time. Nice guy.
Ha! It's no wonder. I feel like I could recognize Trebek anywhere. That being said if he just suddenly showed up at my booth I'd probably be completely confused for a bit. That's a crazy and funny story lol. Reminds me of that time I met Justin Long and Key from Key and Peele in the same night on New Years. Had a rich friend who got us into his local neighborhood bar, which happened to have been rented out by the SNL crew that night. I was hammered. I literally hugged the dude from Key and Peele, and later found out he had followed through with his divorce that day lol.
I saw him back in his "Toronto Days". He was-and is-a class act. Millions of prayers are going out to him.
“The show is the most important thing, and the contestants. The host is important, but in a third stage only. And get out of the way. Let the game play itself on with these 3 great players.” So humbling 😌
R.I.P. Alex. You're so loved that they show you on repeats during the w/e.
LOL! Trebek was always my favorite host. After a short glimpse of his personality, I like him even more.
I.E. "I prefer the simpler things in life like drinking." I rest my case!
Alex Trebek's success has been earned every single step of the way--he started out working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto as an announcer doing station breaks-he moved up to doing short news stories and then he was asked to do a high school quiz show called "Reach for the Top"--it was then that his friend fellow Canadian the late Alan Thicke had him audition for a weekday game show for NBC called "The Wizard of Odds"--he got the job although the show didn't last long--the brass at NBC were impressed enough that they offered him further announcing jobs (High Rollers, Concentration etc)--then in the 1980's Merv Griffith was looking to revive Jeopardy and hired Mr. Trebek and the rest is history
Alex is cool as hell. He's like today's Mister Rogers. I'd love to hang out and have a drink with him.
I bet he has bottomless kidneys. He could drink you through the craziest straw.
Rest easy Alex. An icon of my childhood has passed on.
I got goosebumps with that response of how much longer he'd like to continue hosting. All of that happened till the end. RIP Alex!
YOU WILL BEAT THIS! DONT GIVE IN DONT GIVE UP
I miss Trebek soooooooo much! Still not over his passing RIP.
Still hard to believe he’s gone. Even if you didn’t watch jeopardy you knew who he was. He is greatly missed.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Trebek a few years back when he hosted the NGB. It was my first and only year making it to the national level and I have to say, he is a wonderful person.
God bless you Alex Trebek! I hope that you can beat the pancreatic cancer survival statistics!
Steve Jobs had all the money in the world and I imagine he sought the best medical treatment for the same disease, but we still lost him. That goes to show that even though it can give you better treatment options, money doesn't buy you good health. Alex has my best wishes all the way, but knowing how fatal this cancer means having to prepare myself for the worst...it comes from being the daughter of an M.D. and a retired nurse.
My aunt had stage 4 .. they told her she had some days..she lasted some months 😥
He’s died
@@ASiegelCADAL Sorry dude I’m in 2020 and he passed away :(
@@ASiegelCADAL not to say you are wrong as yes money doesn’t equal health but have a google of Steve jobs, he adamantly denied any proper medication and went with herbal such treatment which led to his death as people actually said it was actually caught early and could of been cured but he denied it.
Over the years, I have learned quite a bit by watching Jeopardy. AImost like being in a class without the classroom...lol! I also pray that Mr. Trebek's health improves. Keep 'em coming Mr. Trebek!
Dude he's the fucking man he seems cool as shit to just hang with
But he wouldn't like you :c
Dean Martin you know this how
A) He clearly doesn't like most people, and rarely if ever likes to 'hang out'. B)My guess is that people that talk like this: "Dude he's the fucking man he seems cool as shit to just hang with" do not appeal to him very much. More of a reflection on him than you, no offense
It's nice to know what Alex Trebek is really like outside of the glitz and glam of the camera's. He actually seems like a genuinely good person.
Always loved the show and Alex Trebek! Praying for you Alex. Get well soon!
An amazing person & show host. God be with him through his tough times ahead ❤️
I’m watching this the day after he died. May he Rest In Peace and his family find great comfort during this saddening part of their lives! ❤️😔
we are so proud of you ,keep it up. we.love watching Jeopardy and you.God Bless.
My FAVORITE show, all these years!!! Love ya, Alex!
I'm just here to pay respects to Alex..... god i loved jeopardy We lost a true *legend* today...
They should release a DVD where they show all (or at least the best) questions the audience asked him
I like him, a little arrogant it seems at times but I like him
heroinhero69 well I'm guessing you don't live in California or NY by your username
California makes up the VAST majority when considering total Population, If you arnt on a coast (east, west, south) you probably belong to a tiny city with conservative values (that are about 20 years behind). Large populations are always more liberal and progressive. They're melting-pots for a reason (not debating the moral/ethics of it all just the pure action itself)
The comments about the country that isn’t in the cost is ignorant. We aren’t dumb people, we live in nice suburbs and we aren’t behind the rest of the country
heroinhero69 Have you ever been anywhere else in the US, because it sounds like you're basing things off of stereotypes.
heroinhero69 you listen to the young Turks, I’m not taking your opinion seriously
Love him so much
I love this guy! His voice is possibly one of the most familiar voices on the planet.
I’ve been watching since 1994 when I was 8! Alex has an epic voice!
Looks like a fun time to watch Jeopardy live and see another side of Alex Trebek. Will miss him hosting Jeopardy plus a proud Canadian.
"I don't like spending time with stupid people, so I have very few friends" 😂😂
Andy Saenz Hey Alex you have a collect call from the white house, will you accept? *Click....Tone*
I definitely relate to this statement.
An absolute legend. Rest in peace, Alex.
Wow Alex Trebek you......REALLY need to grow back that 80s thing. You looked AWESOME. And yes, you still do. Can anybody answer this: This person is an AMAZING human, and a very good and nice man. What Is A Good Host

Love Alex!!! Best game show host ever!!!
Why all the subtitles? Heck, he's Canadian, not Cambodian.
joltinjack, The show is close-captioned for those who cannot hear. It is a godsend for the deaf members of society that enjoy this show. Duh.

Maybe the UK and Australian audience?

THIS is the correct use of clickbait. I thought it was going to be fluff or maybe a hitpiece or I would not like Alex after watching this but, turns out he's a really funny modest guy!
God bless you Alex! Continued prayers for you!
Bless you, my dude. I’m happy this isn’t a negative video

I was in the audience once in 2013. Some one asked him "What's your favorite breakfast cereal?". Trebek said: "Frosted Mini Wheats".
Why are there dislikes for this video?
You echo my sentiments Alex. I now have my granddaughters hooked on Jeopardy.
