This is what 'Jeopardy!' host Alex Trebek is really like

CULVER CITY, California - We recently had the opportunity to visit the set of "Jeopardy!" on a taping day and got to talk to the iconic host of the show, Alex Trebek.
Trebek allowed us to chronicle his entire daily routine, from his morning production meeting with the "Jeopardy!" staff, to sitting in the makeup chair, to the actual taping of the shows. Five episodes are filmed on each taping day, and there are approximately six taping days every month.
We got to interview Trebek in a few different settings, but we also got to record his interaction with the studio audience. During each commercial break, Trebek takes questions from the audience. It's during these segments that you'll get to see a side of the iconic host that you rarely see on the show itself.

During commercial breaks, when he’s not answering questions from the audience, he sings to himself, but he’s wearing a mike, so everyone can sing it. I was rocking a decent jewfro then, and he sang to himself how I had the same hair he had in the ‘70s. That was fun.

The fact he said "thank you" to the make-up lady indicates he really treats all people with thoughtfulness. Most stars don't even speak to the crew, unless they are barking orders at them or cussing them out. Trebek seems like a decent guy, far beyond needing others to polish his ego.

    • Caged the only way it will work is, the new host has to be awesome enough to usher in their own new era. As you were mentioning for example, Price is Right. They picked Drew Carey, a guy who had hosted shows before and demonstrated great charisma and poise. A strong enough character to move from a "Bob Barker era" to the "Drew Carey" era.

  • Had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Trebek back in the early 2000's at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. He came through my vendor booth, asking some very specific questions about plasma display technology. The whole time we were talking, I kept thinking to myself "I know this guy", but I couldn't figure out from where. I had to sneak a look at his badge before I realized why his voice sounded so familiar, and then it all clicked. It was during that brief period where he had shaved off his mustache, before growing it back again (anyone here remember when he finally shaved it off for keeps?), so he really did look completely anonymous at the time. Nice guy.

    • Ha! It's no wonder. I feel like I could recognize Trebek anywhere. That being said if he just suddenly showed up at my booth I'd probably be completely confused for a bit. That's a crazy and funny story lol. Reminds me of that time I met Justin Long and Key from Key and Peele in the same night on New Years. Had a rich friend who got us into his local neighborhood bar, which happened to have been rented out by the SNL crew that night. I was hammered. I literally hugged the dude from Key and Peele, and later found out he had followed through with his divorce that day lol.

  • Alex Trebek's success has been earned every single step of the way--he started out working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto as an announcer doing station breaks-he moved up to doing short news stories and then he was asked to do a high school quiz show called "Reach for the Top"--it was then that his friend fellow Canadian the late Alan Thicke had him audition for a weekday game show for NBC called "The Wizard of Odds"--he got the job although the show didn't last long--the brass at NBC were impressed enough that they offered him further announcing jobs (High Rollers, Concentration etc)--then in the 1980's Merv Griffith was looking to revive Jeopardy and hired Mr. Trebek and the rest is history
