Why Did Pep Guardiola Dump His Philosophy This Season?
Why Did Pep Guardiola Dump His Philosophy This Season?
If you watched Manchester City this season, you would notice that the team underwent a lot of tactical changes to achieve what they were able to achieve. For years, Guardiola was so stubborn about sticking to his football philosophy at every club he managed, but this season, he completely dumped that philosophy!

He didn’t dump his philosophy :he was adapting to Halaand but fundamentals remained the same
Not in one go, no. But slowly, we've seen evolutions of his tacting growing and changing to a point where it's unrecognizable to his reign in Barcelona.
@@samoeurnkaing2868 that is the main problem with yo guys you think he is gonna play axact same kinda footbal like he has Xavi,Iniesta and busq..look the game he played at Bayern certainly none ever thought he could adapt into a no9 like lewa but he did ..so as to now 🤷🏾♂️

Pep went from possession and control to just control the game. He find a way to control the game even with sharing the possession.
And yet they still had mostly high possession matches
Well he had Xavi, Iniesta & Bosquets mid field hence controlling was a lot more easier.
Man City defence was top class this season. No denying about that.
That’s why City 🌃 won 🥇 the Treble 🏆🏆🏆 besides Haaland 50+ Goals ⚽️⚽️⚽️
After fixing the defence they finally won the UCL
I don’t think he dumped his philosophy, he adjusted it to compete against modern tactics and the roster he has. Physical strong strikers are becoming more important not only to keep the ball but to also make space and shooting lanes for your midfields. They still control posession in almost every game.
They always were important except in Barcelona. Heskey, Crouch, Toni, Koller etc.
Suarez Firmino Torres Aguero Tevez Berbatov VanPersie Sanchez Jesus Trossard Messi.
3:05 Speaking of total football, there's a video of Cruyff where he says that, although he likes his centre-forward to drop deep in order to create a diamond in midfield, if he has a world-class striker then he's gonna play him as close as possible to the box in order to play to his strengths. That's similar to what Pep did with Haaland. Maximizing your best players' strengths is always the key.
Pep is Cruyffs favourite student
Yes. When Barca players were mostly short guys they mostly dumped crossing in corner kicks and just played out.

Pep has tactically evolved because football is a sport that evolves as well. Pep has expounded on his tactics and understanding of the game since his Barcelona days. The current version of Pep Guardiola is more versatile than his earlier version at Barca. At Barca, Pep had one way of playing the game which was possession football. Now, at City, particularly this season, we have seen Pep become more dynamic. The fundamentals of Cryuff's positional play still remain the same but certain things have changed. City have won games having less possession than the opponent which was unthinkable of a Pep Guardiola team. Games against Arsenal in the Epl and Bayern in the CL, City had less possession but ended up beating both teams resoundingly. Pep has understood that possession and control are not entirely the same thing. For example, the game against Arsenal at the Etihad where City won 4-1, Arsenal had slighly more possession than City yet had less shots on target than City. So, this means that despite City having the lesser possession, they had more control of the game than Arsenal. Basically, Arsenal had more possession but less control while City had lesser possession but more control of the game. The best way to describe Pep's tactical evolution is that he has become less stubborn particularly when it comes to possession. This version of Pep is way more unpredictable and more cunning to the opponent than his earlier days as Barcelona and Bayern coach. The game against Real Madrid at the Etihad a few weeks ago in the CL semi final, City played very similar to Pep's Barcelona. But the game against Bayern in the quater finals, City looked a completely different team all together. They looked like a hybrid between Pep's possession football and prime Mourinho's counter attacking football. Pep has 2 main systems that he uses depending on the opponent he is facing. At Barca, Pep only relied on one main system.
He also have to deal with the players he have. Haaland isn't a dribbler. He is a positional player. He will stay around his area or the box and take an opportunistic shots. He is tall and strong which translates to very hard and fast kicks. That is hard ball to block when you are the goalie, and hard to intercept or react to for the defenders. Messi is a play maker, great assists, and he can score by himself with defenders around him. 2 different players. The coach is just adapting to the style of play these players like.
Wym bro?Guardiola still has the highest possession stats, tf u talm bout
@@lordinfernape4753 Read my original comment and understand before replying with nonsense. It's not all games that City have the highest possession stats. The game against Bayern and Arsenal in the just concluded season are good examples. Against Bayern, City had an average of 40% possession in both legs but still won the tie. Like I said, understand my comment first 🤦♂️🤦♂️.
Great analysis!
Nice analysis. Thank God, Pep has somewhat realised that possession doesn’t help you win games. The 3-1 defeat against Madrid showed that. City had the possession but Real won in the end
Pep Guardiola is a smart man, and a deep connoisseur of football. He is not some fanatic of his own one trick wonder. He had Barcelona, he did Tiki Taka. He has a great all around team, with a super strong striker: he acts like the coach of the world's best striker's team.
and still inter manager outclassed him in the final match.
@@pacoextremeOutclassed how? He made stones play no8 with diamond shaped midfield in the right still false 9. It was 3-2-4-1. Just 1 striker to breach 5 defence and 4 midfielders. Are you a d***?
@@pacoextreme Pretty sure he (Guardiola) won that one
@@pacoextremeoutclass in what sense? all inter did was defend at the back and then 1-2 long ball and attack
@@Dshun And yet created more danger.
I dont think he changed his philosophy, to be honest I feel like they didn't use Haaland to his full potential, his stats say otherwise, but there were many times in games in which he made runs behind the defenders but no one passed the ball. Guardiola prioritizes ball control, and does not want to loose the ball. Once they adapt to Haalands runs he'll have even betters stats.
I think so too
He did change, he evolve with modern game , going direct and it also has to do with the quality of the players , they are not one barca level so they'll never play the same.
The greatest coach of all time.
He just adapted to the players but the fundamentals and principles remained the same
Haaland is a box specialist. If you have a player like him you have to use him right. He didn't change for Ibra in Barça because there was a much better player than Ibra who would be underused with that change.
He is awesome GOAT iconic legend
Haaland is so good, that he made the best coach in the world (maybe of all time) reconsider his life choices.
With Captain Clutch gone and Kova in the rooster. I wanna see how Pep use this team. Kova's ball carrying skills are top notch and ik Pep will use his full potential. Let's see what happens. Excited for 2023/24
Possession was not his goal and his philosophy it was the right way with the players that he got. Plus while I do think Haaland was very long awaited addition to man city, it is kevin de bruyne that is truly essential in man city's simpler but deadly attack because his cross speed and accuracy is absolutely unreplaceable.
Yes, exactly, people still don't understand him or what "philosophy" is. He has said himself in interviews that his philosophy is to enable the right solutions for the right problems in the right places at the right times. The tactics help achieve and organise that. Keeping the ball was favoured when players could not complete a goal-scoring chance with every pass, or convert that chance with every shot. With his players now, the direct passes are more likely to create goals and win games, and so he decides to play this way. That is according to a philosophy.
@@C33FernandezAnd he has to make his tactics according to the players as well. With Xavi, Iniesta, Bosquets being in midfielders it was very easily to play control and possession.
Very simple he is the best ,no matter what ,he didn't change nothing..
If you look at Bayren last year and earlier, they KILLED tiki-taka, because their speed and fast Ball Movement means more "open" shots on goal. Most teams learned Mourhino's pack-the-box tactic to blunt tiki. Haaland was lethal at Dortmund bc he got the ball frequently and in open field. Pep changed to accommodate the skills of this player (look at Lewy at Barca - the slow buildup blunts his runs). If you watch Barca's Messi days, 30% of goals were from counters, long thru passes, long shots. A smart coach exploits what is given him. And like the video says, Defense really matters against great teams.
Tiki-taka was only possible and will work on iniesta, xavi, busquets and messi. Mid fielders that can work with short passes, de bruyne is never that mid fielder, neither are the rest of the midfielders in city.
Yep. They are great at handling the ball and dribbling, especially Messi. The coach just adjusted to the type of players he has and the tactics of the today's league. It is same for American football. Coaches adapt to the style of game style and tactics the opponents use eventually. Some coaches adapt to it better than the others. That is why there are different quality of coaches in any sports.
Man you need to watch some football if you think man city play a different type of game then Barcelona
Even if you had all those players, they'd still lose because the tactic is outdated
Silva, Alvarez and Mahrez are the playmaker through short passing and dribbling and gundogan a little bit, Grealish not a good dribble
@@doomedtolove9214They're not even close to quality displayed by Xavi, Iniesta, Bosquets, Messi in mid field
even in 2020-21 season pep used a false 9 because agree hardly got any game time

This is why Pep is the best🔥 he isn’t obsessed with his Phylosophy but when he has a different squad he just creates another tactic
great video. Pep always a trend setter. his experimenting trait will ensure his football style evolving. everyone else has to keep up.
No way did he dump his philosophy. The foundation of his team is always present with his triangles, overloading centre mids in the midfield. He barely play wingers anymore for his important games this season. John stones is a revelation this season though
Love the videos bro ❤
The philosophy never changed.
I disagree, you adapt the strategy to the players you have available. Also the "tiki taka" was a big myth. The biggest and most important part of that football was possession and pression on turnovers.
Isn't the philosophy Possession positioning & pressing
Tiki taka is called for small intricate one touch passes That's what it is 🥴 Obviously isn't the philosophy it's the more beautiful part of the philosophy
How is it a myth?
Yeah, Pep himself said he hates the term "tiki-taka". Because it implies passing for the sake of it. While his tactics are all about passing for the purpose of progressing the ball and ultimately scoring goals.
Barça's tiki taka cannot be replicated by any team either. They had short, nimble players, the best midfield trio of all time and messi, alongaide other greats. Man city doesn't have that midfield quality. What they do have is de bruyne who is a through ball genius along haaland who's a box monster. So no point in keeping the passes short
GOAT; (great video!)
Like Bruce Lee says flow like water adapt,Pep is very dynamic
I feel like Pep will change next season l, I think he was just exploiting the momentum and shock that Haaland had with city
I disagree with your premise of Pep’s philosophy. Pep has not embraced a new philosophy. His philosophy remains the same and he communicates it clearly to players. That’s why he excels. What he has done this term in the premiership - and has done everywhere throughout his career - is play to the strength of the players available to him. In FCB, Tiki Taka was unavoidable. The same worked for him in Bayern except that recognized he had a very good focal point in Lewandoski and do not need to play with a False 9. This term in City, he brought a machine in the Focal Point, Harland, who obviously cannot play the pass and move game because he loves to hang around the box. Would have been a waste to compl him play as a false 9, so he finds a way to incorporate him into hIs philosophy through lobbed balls and fast breaks and it worked perfectly. That does not mean he has abandoned his philosophy. He continues to innovate and evolve!
People here claiming Pep didn’t dump his ideas and the “fundamentals” remained the same, which is is misleading to me. The only thing that has remained is aversion to counter attacks. He did this before by having control in midfield, this season he did it by having 5 defensive units who can win 1 vs 1 situations.
Well you can't disagree that he's the best
@harveywhite8060 I doubt after he won 2 trebles But even if that is thew case still then I'm pretty sure he will retire as better than anyone else from past

Pep stopped being obsessed with possession, when he realised possession alone couldn't help him triumph. Instead, he adapted with the rise of Haaland, and fundamentally reshaped his philosophy. Instead of possession, it is about controlling the situation. He achieved all three cups in a row for a year because he realised better control win all.
he was more direct than he used to. More like zidane as a manager
But seriously though 17/18 18/19 Man City were more delight to watch.

City won the Prem because Liverpool, Man U, Tottenham and Chelsea all performed well below their average. Arsenal throwing away the title gave them the ultimate courage to go all in on the FA cup and UCL. This upcoming season will really test how good they are. Especially in the UCL. If you can't perform on this level on a consistent basis you are not a great team. Everyone can do better in domestic leagues and cups but to me UCL is the ultimate test
If you can win treble means you a good team. Even 3 peat Real Madrid lose domestic cups. Means they are not totally good in that season. Only good at 7-8 matches in UCL. That is why Sextuple Barcelona is considered the best in history. Because they win all titles in a season/calender year. ALL TITLES
Best coach of the century
Oil money 😂😂😂😂😂
@@gibrielmarong782 loser. we won treble
One thing i will say though, teams are better off taking pot shots at goal this season against City. Than trying to work their way into the box. Because there's just no way they will get past the defence. At least taking long shots from outside the box will increase their odds with shots on target.
Zidan did not dump his way. But I heard that the luckey Zidan was just telling Marcelo and Carfajal to cross for CR7 (he just had the dressing room and the team superstars) But Pep adjusting to the qualities of his squad his wisdom (social media reach media in a nutshell). Tactics follow weapons. You have a weapon like Haland, you adjust your tactics.

Hear me out, since 2017, I wish Barca could adapt the arsenal style of play. Possession, press after loss of possession, dominate games , and creativity inside the box. Right now we have youth players and good finishers.
Pep is a legend but would like to see how he can manage a team to success that has a limited budget or is a mid table team. The only challenge left with Pep to do it. Jose and Klopp have achieved success even with limited budget or average teams.
GOAT manager - Pep the 🐐 forever
It is impossible to play like Barcelona if you don't have Daniel, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and Busquets.
Yea when I watched the final, I knew city is nowhere near prime Barca... To play like Barca he's needed 6 midfielders to control the tempo 😂
i would love to see how a player like luuk de jong would do under pep he is kinda a mini haaland in a way so would he play him like haaland
Of course he is a great coach only great coaches can win triples with 3 different teams barca bayern and now city... This man truly is a genius
no he didnt dump his philosophy he just tighten the defense and adapted his tactics with the resources he had, only Barca born and bred players can play the tiki taka style of play if he had to get he had to get only that sort of player he would have to dump the whole team and all the reserves as well. he had to adapt a little to what he doesn't have and get the type of players he always wanted but could not get in other teams players who respect and listen to him young one like Haaland
He did What he needed to win
U just reavaled peps plans 😮
He tweaked his philosophy to accommodate players. This helped him find answers to all sorts of problems that any team has thrown.
Greatest (TOP LEVEL CLUB) coach of all time... national team or relegation coach im not sure if he would be the best at that..
Pep is great. But he also has to adapt to players and the game. His players at man city are not the same as barca, they have no messi like players for false 9, barca players have no ego and plays passing a lot in the past cuz the players in barca that time were smart passers. Man city has power strikers at front with aggressive forwards. Tiki taka is not viable to man city.
Answer: he didn't. Guardiola has always been adaptable. He tweaked a couple of things, like sometimes City will sucker teams in to pressing their first phase to then quickly attack like Brighton do, but using a big number 9 isn't something that's anti-guardiola.
What he said about cancelo was wrong though , he plays more like a winger than midfielder
Johnny, Johnny Stonessss, Johnny, Johnny Stoooonessss 🎵🎼

John Stones for Ballon d'Or 😁
Pep = GOAT
Imagine if he used this tactic with Zlatan
Tiki-Taka sometimes is useless like when you need a fast goal
Oh he changed tactics, everybody applaud. Some coaches out there change their entire play-style on a match-to-match basis, possibly because they can't afford to buy one of the best squads in football, and they're not hailed as geniuses. I want to see Guardiola coach Westham with a mediocre budget and then I'll be impressed.
He changed football
Philosophy evolves is not dumped.
Why was smoke coming out of Gabriel Jesus?
Why doesn’t pep play 433 anymore
He did not abandon his philosophy is still have highest Possession.
He didn't it's called evolving. Still tiki taka but with pnp and direct.
People have to realize its not the same players and he cant play the same like in 2009 becuase his players cant adapt perfectly to that playing style. Remember all those players from prime Barcelona were teached to play like that for years in la masia.
Pep got the idea from Brighton..
Stones at striker?
Very interesting
Because it was a style of play that fit the world class, professional players he had at Barca…He’s also missing Messi who was the key to that style! It’s not rocket science and he gets way too much credit for that style of football and his teams success afterwards. When you manage the worlds wealthiest teams a toddler could win the league as the manager 😂
he never went unbeaten
5 defenders and 5 attackers with no need for the traditional midfield
He didn’t dumped his philosophy, he just brought his philosophy into English football culture and try the best way to emulate it
He did not dump his philosophy he used a natural no.9 instead of False.9
From what I watched this season, 85% of this is wrong. The only correct thing said here is "the system was restructured to fit in Haaland"

You guy, you understand nothing about tactic. Pep didn't change his philosophy. Pep's tactic is not based on possession, but position. Possession means nothing. Pep always use positional game, even this year. This is Pep's philosophy : position but not possession.
Which team had the most possesion in the EPL and the UCL??? City. He did not abandoned his philospohy, what a fukn joke off a video. High pressure after losing the ball, attacking football, defending with the ball, attemping to have possesion. Thats Cruyff philosophy, and thats Pep philosophy. Defending well, doing fast counters, long balls, are just resources they can use (along with making many small passes and long possesions), they arent against Cruyff philosphy.
His philosophy is winning
