    • Ha ha it does! I play Pep's 2 3 5 with a false 9 free 8 & inverted fullbacks it works all the time. But Ive been follwing Pep closely since 09 if you told me he'd play that type of 4 4 2 Id say never. Espescially as you saw it at Bayern. Their 4 2 3 1 was more like a 4 2 4 at times & he hated that. At Barca the closest he came was a 4 2 2 2 once. Pep is a Master adapter that's what makes him a master tactician.

    • @@q.veyane5388 I think Pep also played 343 diamond a few times too in the past, mimicking Cruyff style to some degree, but of course on the pitch the players movement are fluid and it looks more like 3412 or 3142 with Alba and Alves overlapping then Pedro and Villa cutting into the half space and Messi dropped wide to link up with Alves.

    • Yeah, I also think his time at Barcelona b is underrated(since it is it's own entity and therefore it's own team I think it's just not allowed to compete with the first team so no Copa Del Rey football and they must play at least one division below Barcelona). Relegated from the 3rd division and on a downward spiral(with failing to win their final ten games) Pep took over and already had a style of play in mind, people around him at the time say although the Barca DNA was there, he always demanded extra from his players. From an article about this "Things were stale and there was disbelief that Guardiola even wanted the role - turning down the more prestigious position as head of the academy. Luis Enrique and Eusebio have since used the job to progress their careers but that was only viable _after_ Guardiola...He disbanded the C team and merged the two groups. He allowed a limited number of older players to join the squad and brought added professionalism. Fines were introduced. In-depth opposition scouting, practically unheard of at that level, became commonplace. It quickly became apparent that the B team was better run than Frank Rijkaard's first team." Dimas Delgado and Sergio Urbano (a midfielder and striker, respectively, in Pep's team) gave their thoughts on him later in their careers to sky sports "He had very clear ideas and he was fantastic at explaining them. He explained himself so clearly. Every player in the team understood their job and the plan for how to win every game. I think this is his secret." and "He was different to anyone before. It was noticeable when he talked about the game, but above all it was noticeable in the way that he transmitted ideas, how he lived and breathed football and understood it" This must've been tricky, he wasn't working with people who had been playing for a while, these were teenagers getting their first taste of competitive football so he probably had to be careful when conveying his message ( that said it most likely helped that he is Spanish and is also a product of the same academy). Gai Assulin(another player from the team) said "I remember that the videos were never longer than 10 minutes. He knew that the players would disconnect after 10 minutes. But he used to have a lot of information for himself. I remember that he used to arrive at the stadium hours before the players and leave hours after the players. He put in a lot of preparation himself before games but he never made the mistake of giving too much information to the players." From an article that quotes another player "Urbano endured a tougher time through injury, but credits Guardiola for his support. 'He was always attentive about how I was mentally and physically,' he says. 'My memories of playing in that team are ones of joy, having fun with the ball in difficult situation on small pitches. We knew that we had to be the protagonists. We defended by keeping possession. It was strange because the pitches were very small and it was believed at the time that it was impossible to play football on them. But Pep and his concepts made us believe that it was possible to play football on the floor." He won the title securing promotion back to the 3rd tier and the team went on, I believe, to secure promotion again when he went to the 1st team.

Guardiola's Barcelona was totally unexpected, it was an earthquake, not just in results, but in the way of playing the game And 13 years later Guardiola continue to changes it ! People who only swear about Champions lies to themselves. Everything could happen in a game. And anyone is invincible, like a God of the game. Guardiola didnt win since 2011 in Champions but he won A LOT 3 Liga, 3 Bundesliga, 3 Premier League (I mean... OMG) with the breaking record of points in the three countries. He had great squad ? Of course, but he never underperformed, and most important : it's just that every club in the world want him.

It's next level football tactics. Essentially it's all about having numerical superiority in all parts of the field, Pep solves this by having players play in multiple positions in different phases of the game while city never become disorganized because of it . His teams may lost at times but they never play cowardly football. You'll never see luck in his team's goals because there's always a start & the end, Players don't lose Appetite in his teams. Most of these Players in City squad were discarded or unknowns before they boomed with him. Idc what people say , his football makes you believe he's the one. • "Most of these Players in City squad were discarded or unknowns before they boomed with him" I agree with your comment in general, but that particular quote is false. Apart from Zinchenko, Jesus and Foden, who came through the own youth squads, literally all players of City's current squad played on a very high level at their previous clubs, were well-established and had many clubs interested in them. Why do you think City spent so much money on these players, if they were unknown or discarded you'd think they would get them for a low price. So I don't get how you can come to such a conclusion/statement.

I just wanted to say that apart from the three I mentioned (Jesus, Zinchenko and Foden) none were generally unknown or discarded. For example, Sterling was really good at Liverpool already and a starter for them, De Bruyne carried Wolfsburg into the UCL knockout rounds and broke the Bundesliga assist record (back then), Cancelo made his first appearance for Portugal in 2016 already and played for Juventus before going to City (and to my knowledge was only sold for financial reasons?), Dias and Ederson were both high-ranked talents at Benfica, Dias was amazing and made his Portugal debut too when he played there, Stones made his national debut also in 2014 so two years before going from Everton to City. Of course, all of them reached their next level at City under Pep and he definitely made them better players, but it's not like they are a team of underdogs and discards who proved everyone wrong, that's what I wanted to say, so maybe a misunderstanding here =)

Someone uses it all over the field, and someone leaves an extra defender like Bielsa why, if it is so effective, then teams like Liverpool and City do not use personal orientations (man to man pressing ) like Flick's Bayern, Conte's/Inzaghi's Inter, Bielsa's Leeds, Gasperini's Atalanta???

  • People might say that City aren't as penetrating or clinical as far as goals now compared to other years, but I admire so much the movement on the pitch. One of the more interesting videos I've seen on guardiola is how he splits the pitch into 11 different sections and instructs players that he wants a player in each of these positions at all times. I feel you can see this especially in the fb's in more recent games as they constantly switch from coming inside to going out wide and cover so much of the pitch. Has suffered a little not having that 'natural' striker in and around the box, but is fascinating to watch the movement. The recent match against Liverpool was a great watch and I feel Liverpool's strength is the players and where you know how Liverpool will play it's just a question of well a team can stop Mane and Salah

  • Pep has improved City massively. No one can argue that. But the only trophy that City does not have is the UCL. Trophy and a lot of rivals make a mockery of that, especially after spending millions. Last season City were in the final against Chelsea. Before we saw the starting lineup on the final I was pretty confident that we would beat Chelsea with the kind of form the team was against B Dortmund, RM, and PSG. City spend millions on the midfielders, and not playing any holding midfielder, and starting Sterling who was completely out of favor, was the choice of Pep. As a City fan, I was very furious with that lineup. And you all know the result. Sometimes, overthinking can backfire. I don't think Chelsea beat us in the final but Pep beat his own team on that day by selecting a miserable starting lineup. I am just wondering now if that was the time we came the closest to winning it but end up losing. I am not too sure of this year as the UCL competitiveness is so high. We should have won last season as we never had to face teams like Bayern and Liverpool. Hope is there if Pep does not mess with his team at the crucial games.

For example, you said a feature of Pep’s first campaign was “tactical uncertainty”. Was it tactical uncertainty? If so provide or mention the evidence! Or could this “tactical uncertainty” have been a deliberate variation in cases were Pep had the knowledge to adapt I.e it was a purposeful strategy. Tactical variation might be more suitable re future videos? Many thanks again though and great video!

City played Raheem on the left and Mahrez on the right simply because they were better in small spaces than Sane on the outside going direct, since teams sat back against City after their 17/18 counter attacking output when pressed high.

Only new recruitments brought the fix. Gasparini, in Atalanta, much more interesting as he's probably outperformed with the available squad. By contrast, all PSG managers have underperformed.
