  • Firmino also needs to be on this list. People laugh at the concept of 'defensive striker', but in Gegenpressing which demands the team to win the ball back as high as possible, Firmino is possibly the best CF that you could have.

Everyone else can a) see his poor positioning and shotstopping, and b) look at the stats/models, which confirm the eye test. If anything, Ederson looks better than he actually is. His numbers really are shocking. A CB or CM can cover for Trent A-A, you can't cover for your keeper without getting a red card.

  • One of the solutions to the Trent issue, from the England team perspective, is to play him either out of position as a defensive midfielder or (less likely) as an inverted right back. He's spoken about trying midfield for England before, and that he probably prefers that position when playing internationally, at least. In fact in call-up team sheets he is more often referred to as a midfielder than a defender. That being said, he has played both roles for England so his versatility as a Euro squad choice can't really be overstated.

  • Wow. Well done. One of the best analyses I've watched and listened to. I'm an Arsenal fan and it's a club culture for our strikers to be involved in the build up play and should be ready to change position inside a game: Kanu, Anelka, Reyes, Henry, Walcott, Van Persie, Giroud, Babtista, Carlos Vela etc. The list is plenty actually. But what those players/strikers listed above had that time were midfielders, whether attacking or defensive (Gilberto, Edu, Arteta, Vieira, Rosicky, Dennis Bergkamp (he was in midfield before he was moved forward to partner Thierry Henry) who were actively scoring goals. To illustrate it better. Henry was not replaced immediately after his transfer to Barca and Arsenals' input of goals didn't dropped significantly. Same with Van Versie's departure (Giroud and Podolski didn't hit the ground running immediately, But Arsenal never lack goals. Our issue has always been defence. Arsenal is getting there. That's how I rate my manager: Arteta. All his players are scoring goals. That's a threat to other teams. Thank you for the upload 🙏🏾

    @VRed224@VRed2244 ай бұрын
    • One could equally argue the problem is the lack of goals. I.e., Arsenal don't score enough goals to compensate for the defence. Games are won by goal difference. Attack and defence are not more important than each other, beyond saying you can't win without scoring at least once. In the 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22 seasons, Arsenal scored 56-61 goals in the league. Was the problem the defence? Same deal for 1992/3 and the following three seasons. OK in 1994/95 the problem was also the defence.

  • I understand Jesus's link up play is excellent, but his finishing is so poor that it's a case of the ends not justifying the means. At City, Pep played midfielders, wingers and even Zinchenko up front ahead of Jesus despite him being the only recognised striker in the squad, before he was deemed surplus to requirements and sold. At Arsenal last season, the team's record with Jesus was 2 points per game while their record without him was 2.06. What makes this worse is that in those games without him, Arsenal were playing Nketiah, a bang average striker, and actually had a better record. The man simply isn't good enough to start for a top team.

    • Ouch. That's good info right there, and an extremely compelling argument by using Nketiah as the comparison. Being that after the Fulham game I've essentially given up on Nketiah, this is all the more reason to stick Havertz up top. I honestly don't know why Arteta is fighting it. The answer is right in front of you Mikel...You have a BFG on the squad that's a freaking perfect answer for the position. His finishing won't be any worse than Jesus, and considering all Saka and Martinelli are doing is crossing it in...to 5 foot nothing Jesus.... Ugh. Mikel. Put the square piece in the square hole. The difference between the two is that Liverpool has a better attacking dynamics than Arsenal current has, with more creative output (Robert and Trent) and prolific wingers. Arsenal doesn’t have any of these. In fact their dynamic is poor between the wingers and the 8s, which is why they are not scoring. Pointing finger at Jesus is asking the wrong question, and it has nothing to do with whether he can play in a top team or not, because he certainly can.

    • @lordtea I think you misread me. There is levels to Trent and Reece. Trent has always been better. Reece is protected by largely negative to balanced at most managers who play CBs alongside Reece, a DM, and arguably two almost DMs. Trent is the system. And with Fabinho and Henderson aging, fatigue from long seasons and getting COVID on top of Klopp wanting him to progress the play is why Trent has been exposed at times. Walker (doesn't get criticised for his huge lack of attacking output), White last season, etc can afford to sit back as they aren't focal points either. Marcelo wasn't a good defender, but no one ever talked about it once he established himself with trophies. Trent is the standard and there are a lot of people with Liverpool derrangement syndrome who can't use logic to discuss them.

  • Perfect, I've Been Saying This For The Past Decade. Guardiola Took Bad / Average Players And Made Them Into Stars, Individually They Are Not Great Outside Of Guardiola's System. Xavi Wouldn't Do Well In A 2005 AC Milan Midfield (Seedorf, Pirlo, Kaka), He Would Be Just Another Player. Guardiola Killed The Skillful 9 / 10 Like Ronaldinho, Eto, Toure and Ibrahimovic. Yes More Goals Are Being Scored But Players Are Becoming Less Skillfull. The Only Position That Hasn’t Changed In Modern Football Is The Winger (Messi, C.Ronaldo, Neymar, Mane, Salah, Sane). They Are The Most Technical. This Video Perfectly Summarizes What I Have Been Feeling In The Last 10 Years.

    • This is so untrue. At least at Manchester City and Bayern, Guardiola took absolutely elite players who were, on the whole, the most talented squad of individuals in their respective leagues and basically performed as you would expect when you have the best squad in the league - by winning it consistently. In fact, I would argue he underperformed by not winning the Champions League more often, since his Bayern and City squads were more than talented enough to do so. You can't tell me that players like De Bruyne (who broke the Bundesliga single season assist record at the time before joining Man City) or Haaland (who was scoring an outrageous ~1 goal per game at all of his professional teams before City) are "bad / average players." Same thing with guys like Lewandowski (who broke the Bundesliga single season scoring record), Müller (who now has the Bundesliga single season assist record, beating De Bruyne) or Neuer (a revolutionary player at his position with his sweeper keeper style). It's also reflected in the transfer fees Guardiola spends on his players. Manchester City has an incredibly expensive squad - I believe the most expensive in the world apart from Man United and Chelsea - that cost a lot more to put together than other elite teams like Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern. If you spend more than everyone else (excluding those who grossly mismanage their teams in United and Chelsea), then you should be expected to win more. But Guardiola hasn't done that on the Champions League stage, where all of these elite teams compete.
