I get a lot of comments saying that all the jumps in figure skating look the same...and that's true if you don't know what to look for.
This video explains how you can recognize the different types of jumps in skating: what to look for, how the jump is performed, and lots of examples!
Don't be discouraged if they still all look the same even after watching the video, it takes some practice before you can correctly identify the jumps in real time.

Ikr! I’ve been skating for seven years but when I watch it on TV it’s so hard for me to tell a toe loop from a flip cuz it goes so fast. Axel, lutz, loop, and salchow have gotten easier for me to recognize.
@@fishythefish7984 oh btw hi didn’t see ya there
So lutz jumps basically look like they are about to break an ankle.
No. They are just putting their other leg behind with their toepick and turning the other foot.
Yes.exactly
i'm watching it and I just. it looks like they twisted both their ankles at the same time. i think the lutz is my favorite jump

Newb here! Why are so many jumps "only for men", only "attempted by men" or, only used in women's skating under specific circumstances? Is it because of rules, it makes more sense point-wise, or are women's bodies just not made for it?
You clearly must love the sport and be kind to people to make a video like this. Thank you.

@@lindathrall5133 We also use them for spins :)

As a competitive figure skater this was very entertaining because we never get like a “guide to figure skating jumps” you just kinda learn lol😂
Yeah 😂
Yeah lol 😆
Hehe, yea
But don't they teach you like "oh you have to take off from this side of the blade etc. etc."? Do you have to figure it out yourself omg
Ice King Yuzuru coaches differ, but in my experience it’s mostly done through demonstrations. Although watching someone’s program at full speed and identifying jumps quickly is an entirely different skillset
Yuzu and Yuna aren't called the King and Queen of figure skating for no reason. Their technique is impeccable. Great speed, right edge, incredible height, and smooth landings.
Agreed. Good technique is so important for a jump to look good. Poor technique just makes jumps looked sloopy
Agreed :)
I'm sorry but hanyu and yuna are on a different level.
Well said
@@runrun1935 Duh. Do you think Serena Williams and Roger Federer were on the same level? Obviously no, but still they are the goats of tennis. Hanyu and Yuna competed in different disciplines and era of figure skating. They are the GOATs and golden standard when it comes to textbook technique and artistry.
Finally, I can understand all of the ice skating lingo in Yuri on Ice.

I have seen so many videos not caring to explain what is an 'outside/inside edge', 'toe pick' and just throwing common expressions like "right back outside edge" etc as a given. They probably don't realize that even this is very confusing to complete newbies. I really command you for including that bit since It's essential and so many videomakers brush through it and if the viewer isn't able to understand that then the rest falls flat. The video is very clear and take things slow showing first the mechanics of the jumps in slow motion with pointers and only then the videos in real time speed. Possibly the best one on this topic to show complete newbies. You're a jewel! Keep going with the channel!
I agree on everything you said, this video is sooooo well done!
I’m a figure skater so I would know all of the stuff you mentioned but I think it should be an element part of a video

this is literally eteri teaching the girls flips and telling them (and the judges) its a lutz
Yuzuru really has some of the most beautiful jumps. He makes it look so easy. In his Notte Stellata exhibition performance, he performed a delayed single axel, and he looked like he was flying. If any man can fly without wings, it's him.
Right. I don't even care about jumps (why am I here lol) but that one stops my heart every time.

Hanyu Yuzuru's triple-euler-triple is the smoothest in terms of rhythm. Evenly paced.

i fully take for granted being able to tell the jump aparts since i'm a figure skater, i always forget how difficult it is for non-skaters. interesting point made with the /\ salchow legs and the X loop legs, i had never noticed that but it's a genius way to tell them apart
Great video, you explained the jumps very clearly. It's true the only way for me to recognise the loop was to see the x legs. Great to see so many jumps with Yuzu, Yuna Kim for the lutz amongst others, Javi for the 4sal, and the only 3 men who do correct 4lutz, until Yuzu does it again in competition.
Yuzuru Hanyu is the god of figure skating
i like how every time something is difficult alexandra trusova is on screen, what an absolute queen

Aaaaand.....Yuzuru just did the quad axel. He didn’t fully do it yet but he try it this year. He did the 4 rotations but he underotated. But he won and is qualified for the olympic! SUCH A LEGEND!!!!!!!
Sadly he didnt land it at the olympics but now Ilia Malinin smashed it. The boy honestly said his goal is to achieve a quintuple jump someday. He also is the first scater to land quads in combination.
You know… I always enjoyed watching this sport, however whenever a clip of Yuzuru comes on it’s just another level. Anything he does just looks so smooth… bless that man
Thank you so much! It is the best “how to recognize the jumps” video! I’m waiting only for the video, where we can practice recognizing jumps (a jump, replay and then the name of the jump) that would be awesome
Yuzutea liked your comment! I assume he/she will make one? I'm excited for this video!
jaxnkatya ooooh YES PLEASEEE
Now all the competitions have technical elements point table displayed in the right corner, it takes a few sec for the points to appear after the element was done, so you have enough time to guess the jumps and you can see straight away if you were right.
Yes please!!
yes like a quiz type!!
I've been watching skating for years and have heard of every single one of those jumps and NEVER knew the differences, thank you!
wow quadruple axel not even mentioned. yuzuru must really be pioneering this effort. i want to see him succeed one in competition so badly!!
This is such a good video for people (like me) who know nothing about the technicalities of figure skating! Thank you so much! Here are some timestamps for those of us who would like to return again and again to find specific jumps: Toe jumps: 2:14 - Toe Loop 3:35 - Flip 4:46 - Lutz Edge jumps: 7:12 - Salchow 8:48 - Loop 10:53 - Axel Other: 12:51 - Euler
Now I have seen that Yuzuru is really the best in his jumps and skating
I feel like my mind has imploded: FINALLY, I can make sense of figure-skating that I really like to watch! Thank you for making this vid. It was fab!
Came here after the news of the Quad Axel being hit by the Quad God, as a layman this video helped me a lot with better understanding and appreciating the accomplishment. Great vid!
That is really super interesting. How people are able to do those things without breaking their legs is a miracle.
ok I will need to re-watch this a few more times lol but thank you for taking time explaining and giving examples!! It really clarified a lot of things that I didn't understand before :)
"Double axels are standard for ladies, while triple axels are standard for the men. Very few women attempt triple axels." Now (2/8/2022, one day away from Olympics men's free skate), there should be another line: "Very few men attempt quaduple axels, in specific, Yuzuru Hanyu only." Update: IT WAS CERTIFIED!!!!!! WE JUST WITNESSED HISTORY BEING MADE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Ok I was so sad when I saw that he didn't do it and also didn't land the next quad and I was like crying through that day and the day afterwards but I'M SO PROUD OF HIM DOING IT!!!! He really could've just played safe, but he didn't (very yuzuru-y)! Yuzu said the ice hates him in the short program but as idk who but somebody said, "The ice doesn't hate you, the ice is just trying to keep you." I totally agree !! Update again: omg he said he's gonna continue attempting it and he won't quit being a competitive skater yet!!!!!!!!! I'M SO HAPPYY!!!! I was literally preparing mentally both ways, if he retires or if he doesn't. I was thinking if he continues then YAY he gets to continue his dreams and conquer the 4A and if he doesn't continue then YAY he doesn't have to get hurt that much anymore. Anyways I'm sooo happy because this is the yuzu I'm used to knowing (not the one that asks why effort doesn't pay off)!!! :DD
I felt this 😭 it was a week of a roller coaster of emotions and constant binge watching of Yuzuru’s vids. But after seeing how fast Yuzuru managed to recollect his emotions and braved the press conference alone, i managed to calm myself down too. At this point I’m just like SO PROUD OF YUZURU! I can’t wait for his GALA performance, he said that he’s gg to be performing Phantom of the Opera coz it holds a significant meaning to him (coz of the horrific accident that he had with Lan Yan and both were seriously injured during the Cup of China) and hence would like to complete this program in China. Such a sweet heart and a true champion. Really excited for his performance now AHHH I’m sure it’s gg to be mesmerizing as usual!!! ✨☺️💓
heeeyy could you please tell me what it means for something to be certified? I don't know anything about figure skating, but wouldn't it be the most logical for the jump to be landed in order to be certified? Thank you so much for this. No one talking, just looking and reading, pauses in the right place, text that's easy to understand. I learned so much from this video, thank you!
The movements is too fast that I already know all the jumps but I can't comprehend which one is it lol
This video is two years old but for anybody who comes in now I just want to say that there’s another jump, the quadruple axel, never been landed before (because it’s basically the hardest jump to ever have been attempted), but in the Beijing 2022 olympics Yuzuru Hanyu attempted it and was LESS than HALF a rotation off and got it ratified by the ISJ as a quad axel (4A). He didn’t land it but he’s still the first person to every get it and it wasn’t marked down as a 3a.
This video is three years old, but for anybody who comes in now I just want to say that there’s another jump, the quadruple axel, and young Ilia Malinin lands it during practices, free programs and exhibitions. And he's got that half a rotation more in him.
This was so incredibly helpful for someone obsessed with watching performers but not understanding the difference between each jump, thanks so much can you please do one for the spins too?
I’m here learning so I can appreciate yuzuru talent. First I need to memorize (I have terrible memory) then I need to train my eyes to follow those move because those skaters are so damn fast! 😅
I have finally found a clear video showcasing the different jumps. Usually the skaters at to fast and you slowed it down and gave multiple examples. The lutz is crazy with that back outside edge. Now I have a working knowledge of the jumps. I only knew the axel and the flip before this. I use to do a flip on quad skates and never got the axel, I was too afraid. This video makes it all very clear. Thanks!!
Loved the Video. You did an amazing job explaining the jumps. Just one thing fir future videos: if you put in so many clios of different skaters it might be nice to add their names on the bottom. Just a suggestion. :)
Honestly I got into figure skating a couple of seasons ago, (I managed to catch a few seconds of the winter Olympics in PyeongChang and I was hooked) and I didn't understand a thing. Even more so while searching for explanations on KZhead, (because every single one I've seen brushes over the details) so it's really awesome and helpful that you're doing it! Keep going bro! lol✨💜⛸️

And now there's Malinin's Quad axel. Thanks for the video, I've watched for years and never got the difference. I just nodded my head and let the announcers say Loop and flip and just believed whatever they were saying.
Oh my god thank you for this, it was so satisfying to watch and learn. Now I realize why women’s double axel looks like a triple to me. It’s that half revolution-and it’s such a fast and pretty jump!
Thank you!! I learned a lot, being an amateur figure skating enthusiast, I found the video very helpful. I always thought a skater fell out of their jump when doing a “Euler”, didn’t know it was actually a jump!
This is so so useful, THANK YOU!!!! I’ve been dying to understand the differences for so long. This video is excellently made!

Wow, this video is great, now I won´t feel so ignorant anymore while watching skating. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!!!
The best way to enjoy figure skating is understanding the jumps, the most difficult part ofevery program. I've seen so many videos describing them, I am still confused when trying to identify the jumps in areal time routine. Thank you for this video. The best. You are a great teacher!!!

I truly appreciate how much effort you put into making this video. Everything was clearly explained and demonstrated. You deserve some kind of award for this.
I just want to say that this is an incredibly clear and effective video. I would have liked more A vs B comparisons to see the differences in action but it was an amazingly informative video and I'm very grateful. I can see the passion and care that went into it. 11/10 video
Wow, I used to see the Eulers and think that the skater messed up since their legs were never as tight as they were for other jumps. I thought it was just regaining balance, I had no idea it was actually intended!
I know this is a 2-year-old video..but it really is so comprehensive and helpful. Thank you
This video should be played before every figure skating competition! So helpful
I think i wouldn't be able to recognize a jump watching a competition. 😂 But this video is really great. I appreciate your effort, because you explained everything so good.
Nice educational video. I can recognize the differences between a flip and a lutz, but not a flip and a toe sometimes. Or I still don't fully understand a flip. I need to rewatch that part again. And thanks for using a variety of skaters! It's interesting to see.
I never even knew about the edges of the skates. People that live in a tropical country like me don't about that sort of things. These explanations are much appreciated, and helps a lot. Thank you very much! I'll definitely come back to this whenever I need a refresher.

Thanks, this was a great video. I used to be a figure skater when I was a kid/teenager so I knew most of this but it was still a good refresher for me on a few things.
