  • People often don’t know that American Sign Language is not translated English. ASL is a language of its own used by the deaf community. When you use your voice and signing ASL, you are basically speaking one language and signing another at the same time.

  • We have to address that Java's subtitles are the best. "It is ok, I told him to go away" cracked me up!! - This made me wonder: Does Java have different behavior with Ellen than with Ryan? Does she uses more crying and braking with Ellen, but more visual cues with Ryan? I guess that since barking won't call Ryan's attention all the time if he is not seeing her bark, she might associate that for him she needs to act differently. Does that happen?

    @astropgn@astropgn3 жыл бұрын
    • Despite how good dogs are with verbal commands (and other sound cues, like in clicker training), they actually respond _exceedingly_ well to visual signals. That’s why it’s really common for dog trainers to use hand signals at the same time. I’ve even heard some claims that dogs respond to hand signals better than verbal commands, though IMHO they are both highly effective. My childhood dog was originally trained with commands in Spanish by my mom. Then my grandma moved in with us and simply started speaking English to the dog, so she quickly learned the English commands, too. And then we moved to Switzerland and my stepdad simply used German commands, so in the end we had a trilingual dog! 😂

      @tookitogo@tookitogo3 жыл бұрын
    • I believe Ryan said he can hear her bark. Some deaf people can hear their dog barking, some can’t. I have a medic alert dog dog who is bilingual (knows her commands in in English and home signs, some of which are ASL) because I’m deaf and everyone else in the family is hearing. Side benefit, she’s smart and she figured out i can hear some things and not others so if I’m not paying attention she tells me when someone is at the front or back door, or if she wants to go for a walk she will either go to the back door and bark once then watch to see if anyone is paying attention and coming to walk her, and if not will come look at me pointedly, then look at the door or try to herd me towards her leash LOL. She communicates very clearly. Like looks at me, looks at her toy, her bowl, the door, and if I’m ignoring her visual cues she will stand in front of me and bark once to get my attention, but if i don’t hear her or see her she will come nudge me. Like i said, she’s really smart LOL their dog seems to be pretty smart too.

A big change with this video was once I was intensely concentrating on Ellen's signing, the noise from Ryan innocently reaching in the food basket for a tater tot was seemingly SO loud. I actually jumped. Earlier on, I also started squinting when Java was barking at the door bc I was trying so hard to concentrate on Ellen's signing. Had no clue how much I was relying on Ellen's voice all this time! I thought I was getting better. I love all your videos, but I hope you'll do more of these. • It was really enjoyable seeing all your expression on your face and body language when your signing. I miss all that when your talking. Don’t get me wrong I like you talking too. It’s very helpful for my learning and identifying what I do know. But I loved watching your natural flow. Thanks for sharing that you two!

  • It was so nice to see how much more comfortable and chill Ellen is when she doesn't have to focus on voicing at the same time! It's true though you guys have parts of your signing that are similar, but ellen does have her own style. What a cool video, thank you guys so much!

  • This was awesome, thank you so much for sharing this with us. I feel like we got to see Ellen's personality more than we usually do, which was cool. Major props to Ellen for speaking two languages at the same time on the other videos. It's no wonder you have to take your time a speak more slowly! It's not like ASL and english even have the same sentence structure!

I have noticed myself with voice off, I sign more faster. So you did great job Ellen! Ryan, you should be PROUD of her! Java is sooo patient with u guys. Love her

  • I work with someone who is deaf and I know basic signs but am really trying to learn conversational sign. I had seen Deaf social media accounts I follow talk about students learning best by not using voice. Seeing how different Ellen is when she's not doing both voice and sign is really a great representation of that. The energy you mentioned it takes to do both makes more sense now. And seeing how you were so fluid and your body language and face, it just makes me understand more that I want to turn off my voice and keep working on it. I might just need Skillshare to help me figure that out 🤣

  • Sign is so interesting to me because it doesn't even look like you guys are looking at the other persons hands to understand what they are saying. Does that come with practice?

    @Ca_1021@Ca_10213 жыл бұрын
    • I remember them saying in one vid that they can see the other’s hands using their peripheral vision? I think lol. And when signing another important thing is to read lips as well, it’s kind of strange to focus on two things at once but it gets better w practice.

      @juliarunn5009@juliarunn50093 жыл бұрын
    • I remember from another video that they said they can maintain that eye contact because they've known each other for so long and they're familiar with the way each other communicates. They said that if it's someone they don't know as well that they sometimes find themselves looking at the other persons hands as well

      @mia-saraking5479@mia-saraking54793 жыл бұрын
    • Hello! It does come with time! Often beginners look at lot at the hands, but then they miss part of the message that is portrayed in the facial grammar. When you are more experienced you use your peripheral and wide lens vision to take in the whole message looking at the face and hands at the same time.
