Woah! Did not expect this to happen...
Unfortunately, there are businesses out there that don't train their employees properly on accessibility and communication. As Ryan said, that was a degrading experience, but you can't let it make you sad; you have to stay strong. If you face discrimination because of who you are, stay strong. Hopefully we can highlight how businesses should communicate with their customers, and encourage businesses to become more inclusive.
Have you experienced discrimination from a business? Share your story with everyone in the comments down below.

  • Hey everyone, I want to thank you all so much for the support. However, please refrain from *any unkind comments* towards the employees. This was not our intention. Our only intention of this video was meant to educate and spread a message of how deaf people might order if they enter your drive through so anyone can be prepared. Thank you all ❤️ p.s. *This video has closed captioning, on a computer it is the "CC" button on the lower right corner. On a phone, select the 3 dot symbol in the top right corner and select captions.*

  • I was a customer service rep at a bank when a woman who was deaf came in to open an account. This was my first encounter with someone who was unable to hear. She had written on a piece of paper what she wanted, and handed it to me. I welcomed her to sit down as I started the account opening process. This was back in the late 90’s when everything was still mostly paper. I had no issue. I pulled out a stickie pad, and began asking questions. At the end of the encounter, we were both laughing at the number of stickies that were all over my desk. What s lovely person. It was memorable, because it was challenging but fun and we were both committed to finding a way to communicate, despite my awkward hand signals.

  • So cool to see a deaf person showing the reality of many people who live on a daily basis. I'm deaf, I also want to add one more thing he said. It's true, we're used to it. Since we were children, we have lived in this type of situation, when I was little, I was very sad and felt lonely. But after a while, I started to realize that if I got sad because of people, I wouldn't live for the rest of my life. It's exactly like he said, if you feel sad because of people who treat you that way, you won't be happy. For this reason, I don't like interacting with hearing people because I always feel lonely. I love the deaf community, I feel happier 😊❤ Thanks to the deaf and sign language community, I don't feel down.

Sometimes they want to be a part of the Deaf community and other times they just pretend to be deaf to gain attention or sympathy. It really sucks that these people thought that Ryan was faking his deafness even though they saw him sighting and exactly like you said, there is nothing to gain by pretending to be deaf in a drive through.

    • Gabriela Soltero Honestly with the amount of people who mess with the drive thru employees and they usually hate their job. And the probability of them ever encountering a deaf customer their entire time working there would be 0-1 their entire time there unless they have a regular one there. So it’s no surprise they would assume that he would be faking it since I think it was the guy who came it when he’s just asking him to write it down. And remember they don’t know sign language so all the guy sees is him giving him a sign to write it down. And the girls saying he can’t hear you. I’ve seen a video of a kid pretending to be deaf it got so many dislikes I think he deleted the video couple years ago and he gave them a paper to read and they took the order no questions asked and wrote back the amount. But the second drive thru they went to they were saying he was faking it and he started laughing then he just sped out of the drive thru... They did not have any other people in line either if it was empty so idk why the girl didn’t just write down the order it was there written down.

It's like if a white guy stole from a store; would it be morally correct for the owner of said store to be rude to all white guys because of it? No. Just because there are fake service dogs out there, does it give a right to businesses to refuse service to a disabeld person with a service dog? Federally, no. Because faking a disability, as well as faking a service dog is as illegal as impersonating a law enforcement officer. And if they hate their job, they need to get a new one instead of taking it out on customers, especially disabled customers. There is no excuse for insulting someone apart from the person who is doing it is a disgusting person who should not be working with people in general.

  • Your videos are very enlightening and informative. I'm sorry that you guys deal with these situations so often, but posting these is definitely a great way to promote understanding and kindness. My love and support to you both. I'm currently trying to learn ASL, specifically words and phrases related to retail, so I can help my customers better. In over a decade, I've only had one deaf customer (that I'm aware of), but I think about her all the time. She and her dad were the sweetest people, and taught me the signs for "Thank you" and "You're welcome". The way her face lit up when I spoke to her directly and then used the signs they taught me was something I will never forget. It just goes to show that you don't need to know ASL to have a good interaction and help people out - some kindness and understanding will do in a pinch.
