The other day I went into a bunch of Chinese restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions - both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! Thanks everyone for supporting me on my language learning journey - Fuzhounese videos coming up very soon!

Once I was in London and a Taxi driver asked me where I’m from and he suddenly started speaking fluently German. That really felt great. I just wanted to mention that because it shocked me back then.

You would have just ignored the notification of that person's reply and went on with your day. The fact that you decided to spend some minutes of your time to write up a reply and stating how "truth hurts" which is you wanting people to know a view that you have, strongly indicates that you do actually care. You hope that making a statement of "truth hurts" which implies that the guy is lesser than you because he "avoids the truth" would provoke him further because you want to sound smart and draw attention to that smartness. You're basically a little bitch of an attention whore who claims not to be one just to sound cool. You probably love reading your own comments and marvel at how enlightened they look to you. • I remember reading a story about a grocery store cashier who was scanning and packing, while the Chinese lady was complaining in Mandarin about her short hair, saying she looked like a boy, and telling her husband to make sure she doesn't crush the eggs. Right near the end she says "make sure she doesn't forget the water" and the cashier replies in English "I won't forget the water". Lady was horrified when she realised the cashier had understood absolutely everything, her husband was like "That's why you shouldn't badmouth the retail workers".

  • When I was in China with a tour group, we were warned that as individuals we could be approached by individuals wishing to to practice English. This happened to me as I was walking alone and we had a wonderful conversation. The gentleman offered to buy me a cup of tea but I had to get back to the ship. Others were taken to homes and had a wonderful time. So glad we were given a head up.
