Timelapse of Every Battle in History
This video shows every battle referenced on Wikipedia (10,624). Every battle is represented by a dot. Dots stay on the map for a while and then disappear.

Rules
• Battles are included only if they have a Wikipedia article
• Each country can only have 1 predecessor state at the same time (eg. the UK's predecessor is England, but not Scotland)
Methodology:
I used Wikipedia as a directory of battles:
1. I created a query with Wikidata Query to get the list of all articles tagged as "battle" by Wikipedia. This gives me about 12,000 battles
2. I downloaded the data that is included in the top right hand table of every of those Wikipedia article. I did it for the following versions of Wikipedia: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, Danish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Hindi, Hebrew, Basque, Bulgarian, Romanian, Catalan, Finnish, Swedish, Vietnamese, Persian, Indonesian, Korean
3. I cleaned up the data on Excel to remove double entries and obtained 10,624 unique battles
4. I created an index of countries with their predecessor states:
• France (476 - 2018): Frankish Kingdom, Frankish Empire, West Francia, Kingdom of France, French Empire, French Republic
• UK-England (927 - 2018): Kingdom of England, Commonwealth of England, Great Britain, United Kingdom
• USA (1776 - 2018): American patriots, USA
• Russia (882 - 2018) : Kievan Rus', Muscovy, Russian Empire, Bolsheviks, USSR, Russian Federation
• Germany (843 - 2018) : East Francia, Kingdom of Germany, Holy Roman Empire, Confederation of the Rhine, German Confederation, North German Confederation, German Empire, Germany
• Spain (718 - 2018) : Asturies, León, Castile, Kingdom of Spain
• Poland (960 - 2018) : Kingdom of Poland, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Duchy of Warsaw, Polish insurgents, Poland
• Rome (753 BC - 476) : Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic, Roman Empire, Western Roman Empire
• China (2500 BC - 2018) : Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, 3 Kingdoms, Jin, Sui, Tang, 10 Kingdoms, Song, Yuan, Ming, China
• Turkey (1037 - 2018): Seljuk empire, Anatolian Turks, Ottoman Empire, Turkey
Limitations :
You probably noticed that Europe concentrates the majority of battles. Possible explanations include the fact that Wikipedia is used more in Europe, the ban of Wikipedia in China or Turkey, or the lack of documentation of military records in some countries.

Fun fact: At about 1250 BCE a little dot appears in the northeastern corner of Germany. That was the battle of the Tollense-valley. There aren’t any written records about it, but archeologists dug up a battlesite with incredibly high casualties for the time and place. This is the first large battle in Europe that we know of

@Hornyshark No he became emperor after having become First Consul of France following a coup he orchestrated in 1799. He became popular in France near the end of the War of the First Coalition when he single-handedly kicked Austria out of the war when a triple attack was supposed to do so (the other two generals who were supposed to drop on the Austrians from the north while Napoleon did from the south were defeated but Napoleon who was leading the french army in Italy still succeeded in securing victory anyway which got France rid of the last threat.... Only Britain remained and their navy was a pain in the ass, their army alone was no big deal so France was no longer under threat of invasion, hence Napoleon's popularity). But by the time, Napoleon did all of that against the Austrians, the French had already conquered the low countries (the Netherlands included) and vast swathes of the HRE. Spain and Prussia were already out of the war by that point as well. Napoleon had nothing to do with any of that. There was only Austria and Britain left by that point. Most tellings of the the French Revolutionary Wars overly focus on the role Napoleon played in them due to his future role which leads to all other fronts (but the italian campaign as well the Siege of Toulon) not being talked about. And Napoleon spent most of the War of the Second Coalition in Egypt. Him coming back and successfully seizing power did help in that one though as the war wasn't going that great for the French up to that point.

i agree, but since i learn Chinese History in Secondary, I wanna tell you what the real events is. in the Shang Dynasty (商朝), the last king is called Zhou, and the people really hated them so a nation called Zhou killed the king and made a Zhou Dynasty (周朝) In the Zhou Dynasty, the first king called Wu cut China into small pieces and called a lot of people to go and look after the lands, also putting the old Shang people in a smaller land 'Yin' so everyone can stop them if they try to go and ruin the government. Seems nice right? Actually not. After a few years, the government of the lands around Yin got persuaded by Yin and attacked the government, but it didn't succeed. Alright I wanna eat lunch bye

American revolution led to more countries declaring independence, popularization of enlightenment ideals, and creating the conditions in which Napolean would rise to power and he is not only one of the most influential people in history but we still use his organization of military forces today in almost every major military. And yes I understand he is French but it was the US revolution that created the conditions for his rise. Im not saying we are the most significant but to say worthless is wildly off base and untrue.

Меня поражает тот факт что Германия и Россия(у которых война - это сплошная история ) в свое время выиграли немало крупных битв с армиями 30k+ с каждой стороны и у них 400 битв за всю историю, а у американцев за битвы считают какие то бандитские стычки с индейцами и мексиканцами
Бандисткие стычки? Они с индейцами десятки лет друг глотки резали. А война с мексикой подарила штатам около одной пятой своей территории
Это не сравнить с битвами с участием многотысячных армий, так то и в России тоже боролись с коренным населением, а про германию я вообще молчу ( особенно если взять Территории Германии середины средних веков, когда они там друг друга резали только в путь. ( где в этом списке наши 800+ битв с самими собой и коренным населением) потому что без этого Ну ладно у США есть война с Испанией, которая тоже не сказать что бы была шибко затяжной, (Корея, кампания в западной европе и Италии +- 10 крупных битв. (Франция Сицилия, высадка в самой Италии, окружения Моделя под Руром Тихоокеанская кампания +-30 крупных битв (Но я бы назвая Мидуэй , бой за Филипины и Иводзиму с Окинавой как 4 отдельных крупных сражения. И из последнего Иракская кампания (кампания 91-го и 2003 го годов) Буря в Пустыне + еще сколько то ну я уверен менее 10 сражений где Иракская армия еще представляла из себя что то способное организованно сопротивляться) Где они там насчитали 800 битв?

Now we could pin it down to political fragmentation as a source of conflict (and it works really well for China and Japan), but then we look at India and the amount of battles is underwhelming for the population and political fragmentation (I'm convinced that most battles on the Indian subcontinent went unreported.)
@@meneither3834 Actually you are wrong. India indeed has seen many disastrous battle, but comparing it to Europe or China, it was very very peaceful. So much so, that it's the wars in most cases, the reason for the downfall of an empire, but in case of India, it was a volcanic explosion in modern day Indonesia in 6th century AD, which led to drastic change in seasons ultemately causing famines in India, which led to first deurbanisation of North India.

That is a very impressive work on the battles and wars throughout our history from ancient times to the present modern era. With every single battle referenced on Wikipedia with the dates, locations of the battles with the dots, the countries who fought and won in them and epic music playing in the background would back the video an very absolute impressive achievement masterpiece. As they all say: War… war never changes. It is men who change, the paths they walk, their symbols their flags. The roads they carve, and this one… has come to an end… History is written by the winners and the winners get the spoils.

Battles are not equal to wars, that why for exemple some of the longest wars in history like the Roman-Persian war or The reconquista don’t even show on the map despite lasting near a 1000 yrs you can have not too many battles in a war.

You have to have writing before you can have history of war records. Civilizations that don't have writing will hardly have any records of war unless they are fighting against a civilization that has writing.

Can you think of any another empire that was the non-stop undisputed hegemon of the classical world (East Asia has different rules due to geography and China was broken several times to be reformed by a new dynasty) for a period of 600 years (from -200 to 400 roughly) ? Having a solid tradition of written history also helps to get a high score there, and the Romans did a fantastic job when it comes to that. It doesn't matter how many battles you win, if no one writes about them and they get forgotten when too old to be living memory.
