  • Nice job. For your information, you shouldn't have sanded the outside of the transformer. The laminations are insulated from each other to prevent eddied currents in the core and unnecessary heating. By sanding them off they are all most likely shorted together. This is the reason you never see a cast single piece transformer core. It would be cheaper to make then this way, but they wouldn't work very well. Drilling and tapping the cores is also not a good idea. Think about it this way: the current flowing the the transformer core is current that could have been flowing through your wires.

    @DudleyToolwright@DudleyToolwright2 жыл бұрын
    • but the microwave transformers are usually welded together, probably because it's cheaper even though it's less eficient

      @l0k048@l0k048 Жыл бұрын
    • That's only on the surface where they are sanded, so internally there will be little eddy current. Should be ok. It will be noticeable in excessive heat in the core if there's too much eddy current. Nicely pointed out there, it shows you have good observational skills.

  • One improvement I can see for this, is to have a foot release to free both hands, and not have someone else to open the jaws. Started making one a while ago, but the vids then, had you grind the transformer apart to remove the coil in one go. This way is so much better, as I don't have to work out how to reassemble the transformer casings.

  • 4:10 Nice job shorting the laminations of the core!!

    @hzmeister9596@hzmeister95963 жыл бұрын
    • It's not actually a big problem the way they did it. At least as long as the inside of the core (where the windings are) is not ALSO shorted in some places.

      @Basement-Science@Basement-Science3 жыл бұрын
    • @@Basement-Science Sure, it's not as bad as a dead short, but it's like using a solid iron core with high induced eddy currents and subsequent losses. Could have just held it down with a couple brackets.

      @hzmeister9596@hzmeister95963 жыл бұрын
    • @@hzmeister9596 NO it is not. There needs to be a complete conductive loop in the iron laminations for it to become *_SOMEWHAT_* like a short circuit. All you get by shorting laminations together on the outside is an (electrical) OPEN loop in the core, so no eddy current flows *_between_* laminations and it is pretty much like before. A slightly bigger problem with what they did is the fact that they put the transformer(s) right up against the steel case around it, again not so much because of electrical contact with the laminations, but because a portion of the magnetic field will pass through the case and cause some eddy currents inside it, which would be higher than in the core laminations because the case is thicker and not made of low-conductivity silicon steel. But again it's not a big deal. In total the things they did "wrong" will probably cause 2% or less extra losses. And either way the transformers will probably burn out in less than a minute simply because they are running way over their spec and without significant cooling. Which is true even for many professional spot welders as well because they never run continuously. The core(s) will be saturating and from there efficiency drops off a cliff and the windings heat up especially fast.

      @Basement-Science@Basement-Science3 жыл бұрын
    • @@Basement-Science agreed. If shorting the laminations together was such a big deal, they wouldn’t have welded the I and E sections along the seams at the factory. Although the drilled and tapped screws does cause the generation of eddy currents closer to the secondary winding, with that large a wire, it’s a marginal difference in efficiency. I personally have built a single transformer spot welder in a The King Of Random(rest his soul) inspired manner. That is to say, wooden case. But I added a fan from the same microwave in an attempt to quell the heating problem. I just don’t see any good reason to make the case electrically one with the high voltage device core. Especially if the operating handle is also electrically connected to that same case. I don’t like being an option for the path of least resistance should a short circuit arise.

      @michaelhicks7452@michaelhicks74523 жыл бұрын
    • @@michaelhicks7452 Unfortunately a fan will pretty much only help on long timescales for cooling down, but not if you want to make a lot of welds in quick succession. Thermal conduction is always very low in transformers like this, with or without a fan. Even under oil it wouldn't be meaningfully better. A metal case isnt such a bad idea for a device like this. At least in case a transformer were to fail catastrophically, metal cant catch fire. I'm sure they are aware that they need to *_solidly and reliably_* connect the case to the PE when making things out of metal that involve mains electricity. In that case electrical safety of it is not really a problem anymore.
