Woodturning | Turning A Bowling Ball
Woodturning | Turning A Bowling Ball
I turned a bowling ball into a bowl! I was really surprised how well they turned. The only real issue I had was the core, which really wasn't a problem to turn it just smelled really bad. I found these at a garage sale for five bucks.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after KZhead started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.
So you took a bowling ball and made it into a bowling bowl, cool
Bowling ball bowl with a hole 🤷🏼♂️
Bowling ball into a ballin bowl?
It's a bowl in ball.
Today on "How It's Made" - Confetti!
Lol
I was thinking that while watching all those streamers! That would be fun to use in a resin project.
Beat me to it lol
I know right i was gonna say the same thing man its alot of confetti at that too
Jon Rumfelt LOLOLOLOLOL
I would totally use this as a yarn bowl. Put the ball inside and the strand through the hole while you use it
Haha that’s awesome!
taking it to the next level. nicely done
@Roger Baker that was sew corny
That was my first thought!
I came to the comments, just to see if someone else was thinking "yarn bowl"
Seeing those purple and red and blue and white chips being thrown at you like that was one of the most cheerful visuals I've ever seen. Looked like the ball was having a party and you were the guest of honor.
hahahaha Thank you so much!!
Orientate the holes toward the "Top". Separate the top in a way that it can be used as a lid, use the finger holes to remove the lid. May need to use two different balls for this.
Part the ball exactly in ½. The narrower the part, the less its effect will be.
This may only work if you have a "passive" ball. Those "active/reactive" ones like the red ball in the video have a heavy core with an off-center-mass. You would want to have this mass centered on your turning machine like Carl did by hoking the ball up at the axis indicator next to the holes. Else the ball could go flying through your workshop... So sometimes the placement may not be chooseable!
use those ribbons and make a bowling ball with clear resin
Cut them thin enough for light to pass through and make them into lamp shades for table lamps or hanging lights. Perfect for a bar, bowling aley, or man cave.
The different shaped cores effect the way the ball rolls down the lane.
send those shavings to peter brown ! remember the aluminum shavings bowl ! (payback time )
Yes but mix it a bright color so it stands out.
Exactly what I was thinking!
@@MontseLC Me tThey would look really good in clear resin.
Yes! Peter needs some of them shavings.
Peter already tried to put Resin shavings in Resin and they vanished. So I'm not sure that this would do anything more than create a colored Resin.
The cores are various sizes and placed in such ways as to affect the centrifugal forces when rolled, thus giving it an 'action' such as hooking to the left or right.
I see I'm not the only one that knows lol I like all the physics involved with the different types and weights of the balls and how it makes them go down the lane
That's exactly right I have a rhino that's offset so I can throw a curveball amazingly
@@KZheadforcedmetochangemyname weight literally has nothing to do with anything
Actually the core causes flare so the ball does not roll end over end and wobbles on its axis so its not rolling over the same track to assist with traction providing the ball to roll over a dry spot on the ball...hool.come from pin placement and the weight block. The core causes flare
Yes the red one is an asymmetrical core it's decent for having a nice hook while throwing it down the lane
I wanna cry “I don’t know if they’re different brands” 😂😂😂
looks like a "How It's Made" video on the making of silly string. hehe
What I thought too when I saw this, I went so is this how they make silly string.. lol
If the holes are on the bottom it could be used for planting.
The item in the center is a weight block and they are made in different shapes and usually off centered to make the ball curve as it rolls down the lane. I dont know what they make the cores out of. Those were awesome bowls by the way. Great job finding something different to turn.
Yup, bowing ball technology has gotten crazy. The core shape, along with where the finger holes are drilled. And how the bowler rolls the ball, determines how much the ball will hook. www.thoughtco.com/bowling-ball-pins-explained-420727
Yes they do that to help people like me with a nasty hook control it and in fact use it.
I'm left handed and did some bowling years ago. Being left handed can actually have an advantage in bowling. The main reason, lane condition break down doesn't happen as much. For those that don't know, oil is put on the lanes. And it is applied in very specific ways. Sometimes heavy in the middle of the lane and light near the edges. Sometimes heavy at the start of the lanes. This is called oil patterns. Well here is where it gets interesting. Every time a ball is rolled down the lane, some of the oil gets carried down lane by the ball. This reduces the grip the ball can get on the dry back end of the lane. In turn, reducing hook potential. Left handed bowlers don't have to worry about this quite as much and right handed bowlers. Simply because there are not as many lefties burning up the left side of the lanes. Now, on to the crazy core shapes of bowling balls. The idea is, the ball spins on one axis while in the oil. Then right as the ball comes out of the oil. The ball flips it's rotation axis, so it can better grip the dry back end of the lane and hook inwards towards the "pocket." The "pocket" is the area between the front pin and the one just behind and to the side. Just to the left of the front pin for left handed bowlers, and just to the right for right handed bowlers. The shape of the weight and where the finger holes are drilled in relation to that weight. That is what determines how easily or quickly the ball can revert back to it's natural rotation axis. The last ball I had, on standard League play oil pattern. I could roll the ball straight down the 5th board from the left gutter. It would get out of the oil and "flip" then hook and slam pretty much directly into the pocket. My issue was being consistent with ball speed, location and direction. Sorry for the long winded comment. Just thought I would share my experience and insight.
I had or have find r still, bit no longer bowl. One of them is a plastic ball with scooby doo on it I think I might try this with that and see how it turns out.
@@horseshoe_nc That is some mighty fine, juicy knowledge you dropped there! Thanks for sharing! Also, long explanations are usually the best, so, yeah! :)
That chuck that you clamped the ball into after tooling the base is one of the coolest things I've seen! Great video, great guitar, beautiful bowls, genius work! TY!
Thank you very much Stephen! It's an Easy Wood chuck with quick change jaws.
That white spot in the red ball looks great. I actually like the result with it.
With all those blue shavings hanging from you, it gives off a real George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic vibe
Was hoping to see you make a Bowling Ball out of some awesome looking wood... oh well, kewl project still...
I thought he was making a bowling ball out of a bowling ball.
@@WadeAlma nope, its a "ballin' bowl".
That's a unique way of turning a bowl. You should do this more often, these just look plain cool. I like them. Very cool project.
Thank you very much!
I was totally BOWLED over by this video. Thanks for posting.
Thank you Mark :)
My favorite part was watching all the beautiful colors come shooting out of the balls! So satisfying!! 😍
You should do a new segment: "Will it turn"
lol
I actually think this is a really good idea and could pull in a lot of views the algorithm for having that in your title should put you in some other categories
This is a great idea
Carl Jacobson He’s not wrong, you should really take some inspiration from Peter Browns titles, they really pop
That's called PeterBrown
Bowling balls would make KILLER yarn bowls for us ladies that love bowling, too!
Holy cow that's incredible. The finished products look fantastic. Who would have thought!
Thank you very much!
The red one looks BEAUTIFUL -- google "yarn bowl" and see what you can do with a solid bowl with a hole in the side. :-)
I was just thinking this. My wife pays all sorts of silly money for yarn bowls turned from nice wood. A bowling ball version would surely appeal to some people out there!
I actually thought he might be making one since he left the hole, but alas I was slightly disappointed he didnt lol
Really funny bowling bowls. Since there's holes.. Some kind of yarnbowl? 👍😃
For someone that used to bowl with a 200 average and had my experience with many different kinds of bowling balls, I really dig this video. I like how you kept the logo and even the thumb hole. You were talking about the core of the bowling balls and each one is different and each surface on the outside is different to give you different results on different oil patterns. Sometimes the CG on bowling balls can be offset which is why some of the cores are smaller and bigger and not as symmetrical. I think what you did with this was very cool!
Thank you Drew!
Ooooh those colors are great! 🤩🤩
'All bowling balls are not created equal'. So that explains my yearly averages! lol Suggestions: 1. Keep the lid. 2. Put the holes at the bottom for a planter. 3. Keep the holes in the lid for a vase. 4. Could you use the holes at the bottom to make a stand out of the ball? Maybe you could use resin to make small round balls as feet or wood as legs. The comments about a yarn bowl were good! I still have all of my balls and I plan to make a water fountain feature from one of them using the holes. And I'll just use the others as decorations. I'm not a woodworker so I won't be making vases or anything but I think the bowls are a great idea. I love this video!! Thank you, Carl.
lol Thank you Sandi! Love the water feature idea!!
I Iove the streamers of resin!!
A bowling ball bowl. Great job. Beautiful result !
Thank you very much!
Very satisfying to watch, and they turned out beautifully.
Thank you!
I feel like those shavings would look amazing in some epoxy... channel some peter brown vibes
You are a genius carl bawling ball convert in to bowl 👍
Thank you!
Oh wow, amazing. Love those. Loved the slow motion too. Tfs,hope you have a blessed day 🤗
Thank you very much Betty!
Amazing! Great work Carl..... Stay awesome!!
Thank you Charlene :)
Wow, that sure made a mess in the workshop, Robin hope you have a good vacuum cleaner. Oh and I love the $5 fine sign behind you
I don't have a good vacuum, but Carl has a great one lol
Robin Jacobson 🤣🤣🤣
Thrift stores are great places to find bowling balls for all kinds of projects... Or canon balls
Such a creative idea! Love the results 👍👍👍
Thank you!
KZheads recommendations have been on point lately
Thank you! :)
2:15 AAAAH!!! IT'S THE SPAGHETTI MONSTER!!!!
They look great, love the idea. Would like to see what you do with the shavings
Thank you Robert!
Great experiment with very cool results. Nicely done.
Thank you brother!
I never knew how beautiful bowling ball shavings could look
Pretty cool huh!?
Pretty cool. The core material is a weight block. It affects way the ball reacts on the lane, depending on size, shape, weight and location in the ball. Just be careful, if I’m not mistaken some block are made of metal.
Thank you Duane!
We can probably assume there will be no video next week. It's gonna take that long just to clean the shop! Great job on an unusual piece, Carl, as always! Phil
hahaha Thank you! It's not that hard to clean up really :)
That’s so cool! Ultimate man cave piece. Two of my favorite things, turning and hitting the lanes!!
Thank you very much!
Wow 😮 they look absolutely amazing 😍
Thank you very much!
Nice Balling Bowls. The red one was most likely a curve ball and the blue ball was most likely a straight line ball. 👍🏼
Good Job I see a yarn bowl Thanks Carl
I was thinking the same thing. You could use the thumb hole for the yarn exit and swirl a gap down to it.
@@shaunfreese2936 Thanks Do you think you need the gap thats a pretty big thumb hole !
That was awesome! I loved how they turned out. 👍
Thank you very much!
With the hole left in it, knitters will love the bowl 😀
Huh!? You made a *Bowling Bowl* out of a Bowling Ball ;P
Since when are those "brands"?
Damn. You beat me to that punch line 😬
@@HelloKittyFanMan. Huh? "Brands"?
Yeah, you capitalized them. Why; did ya think they're brands or something like that? If so, then why?
@@HelloKittyFanMan. It's not for brands, it's more to put emphasis on those words, WITHOUT MAKING IT LOOK LIKE I'M SCREAMING LIKE THIS.
Storm and hammer are two different companies for bowling balls and the core in them affects how they go down a bowling lane on how its hook is
Wow, that red one came out really beautiful. An unusual and stunning turn, thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much Christopher!
Bowling Ball Bowls.....cool...could be the start of some new trend......nice work. Thanks for sharing and keep em coming.
Thank you!
You've shown how to make it. Now, how do you put the silly-string into the spray can?
Thanks Carl. I really enjoyed this video. Being new to the trade I was wondering if you could show us how you mounted this to the lathe
Thank you Mark! I started out in between centers and then put it in the chuck. I can explain it a little more on Tuesday Tip video.
Love the bowls. I love watching the slow motion turning and the long shreds that come off. I think the color shreds from the outside would look great cast in clear resin.
Thank you Susan! A few people have tried to recast the shaving but they don't show up, it's weird.
Awesome work Carl! Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much Gustavo!
Gotta take all the colorful shavings and make a resin blank for some other thing
Great many uses for such a bowl, including a yarn bowl for knitting (you know any scarf and sweater makers ?)
Ya, my sister in-law knits and really wants one :)
Fantastic! I like working in acrylics and synthetics so I'll add a bowling ball to my idea list after serving this.
Wow! Great job Carl, very interesting idea 💡
Thank you Buddy!
Looks like a unicorn vomited @1:20 Love it❤❤
I came BACK to this video a day later just to LIKE this comment. 👍
So...you made a snack bowl for a bowling alley bar...chips, pretzels, and nuts and whatnot..
lol Love that!!
@@CarlJacobson If it was ever a marketable product, that would be the prime market. Maybe a Neiman's item? No two alike. Customize with "your name here." Pick them up at yard sales, and flea markets for a couple bucks and sell them for one-of-kind prices. Could make two from each ball...or make a super classy lamp... All kinds of ideas here.
I love it Carl! So fun!
Thank you Melissa!
What a great idea, turned out great. I like the thought of leaving the finger holes in too to prove it was a bowling ball. Good job brother.
Thank you very much Danny!!
Carl, when you do the one where you leave all three holes.... Yarn Bowl.. no drilling needed..
Good idea Andrew!
So thats how they make the filling for party poppers..
Love it ! It looks like you are having to much fun the end was a great peace of art ! Just put this on my bucket list
Thank you very much Goerge!
Great work. Looks fun to turn.
Thank you!
Most of your bowling ball cores are a mix of resin and a concrete/ cement mix on your higher end balls.
BOWLING BOWL
Watching this video reminded me of one of my early jobs. 16 years-old working at a company that made doors. A lot of doors! I'd come to work after school to piles and piles of sawdust. I'd leave at the end of my day looking at piles and piles of sawdust... It was never ending! This was a very cool video to watch!
lol Thank you very much!!
Not a professional bowler, but I have bowled for many years. As William Jones stated, the core you referred to is a weight (usually a resin based product) that affects how much the ball breaks as it rolls own the lane. It is placed at different places inside that ball in order to have it break into the pocket. Where it is placed in the ball, either more towards the center or to the outside controls the break. Placed more away from the center gives more of a hook or break. Pros most always throw a very large hook in order to hit the pocket (between the 1 & 3 pins). This most always will get you a strike. You are correct that the Hammer and the other are trade names of the bowling balls. Using masks etc. is a very good idea. Nicely done Carl. The finished product was beautiful.
Thank you very much Jeff!
My grandma always told me there was a softball or something in the center of bowling balls 😂
Naw. Just a ceramic or material core. I am a bowler.
So that's how they make party poppers... now I know!
Amazing shots Carl and great results.......... WOW you have joined the million view club Congratulations.
Thank you very much buddy!
Now that was pretty awesome, a great idea to give new life to old things.
Thank you very much!
I did this 12 years ago as a project in wood shop class
You straddling that lathe bed made my hangy down things hurt.lol
This looks like so much fun
that positive aura you radiate when you talk about your work is amazing
Thank you very much!
The thinner red one ........Lamp shade??
The core piece is called the counter balance its helps it carry the spins momentum which makes it turn I watch "How It's Made" a lot
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 beautiful ceral bowl !
Best cereal bowls ever 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
$5 material, $500 labor, $5000 result. Great work, sir.
Thank you very much!
It's a BOWL-ing ball.
Really really cool idea! Loved the video, awesome work!
Thank you very much!
This was very satisfying to watch!
Thank you!
How about trying a bowling pin next
All fun and games until it comes time to clean up the mess. Who would of thought a bowling ball could be so messy. 😀
Bowling pins probobly think so. LoL. ;)
Brilliant Carl … simply brilliant mate. Cheers Mike
Thank you Mate :)
I remember the hammer bowling ball from back in the day. They were actually pretty good balls. They did hit hard. Seeing it turned in to a bowl was pretty cool.
Thank you very much!
It's faked he just sprayed himself with silly putty. lol. Seriously though hope you have one heck of a respirator.
Barely need one, this is clearly not a plastic that generates particularly small chips.
I'd say this project was a STRIKE! Clearly you SPAREd no effort to make this PIN-terest worthy piece. Uh... something about lanes... uncomfortable shoes.... yeah, all out of puns.
lol Thank you Laurie!! Those were great!!
Someone should stop you while you're on a ROLL... clearly we're SPLIT down the middle here! No reason to FRAME it any other way and keep your mind out of the GUTTER!
Those are all great puns from both I can't think of any to add 😏
@@AnthonyTyger Bravo!
Why can't people just stay in their LANE they're are so many TURKEYS in the comments sometimes, This video was was no SLEEPER & didn't cross the FOUL LINE if X MARKS the spot this would get 12 X's in a row and be a PERFECT GAME. I liked this video some of the angles & edits reminded me of the movie 300!
Those are amazing! I love the red one the best.

That’s Awesome, I Love the blue one. Great Job
