Woodturning | The Floating Octagon Bowl

Today's video: After doing that hexagon bowl with the poplar wood and green resin a couple months back, I really wanted to revisit the idea using a transparent resin. I'm glad I did, because I really love how this turned out! For this bowl, I cut out 24 total pieces of oak, and then glued them all into 3 separate octagon rings (8 pieces each) using wood glue for the joints. Once those were dry, I attached them to an oak ring which would serve as the base, and I left enough room between the three to create even gaps. Those gaps were then filled with epoxy resin dyed in a transparent turquoise. After turning, I wet sanded everything up to 3000 grit. I have to apologize for any streaks people might see in the final photos. I was experimenting with a new finish on this bowl, and it came out REALLY bad. I tried sanding it down and then just using the tried and true Waterlox, but I apparently didn't sand off the original finish enough as you can still see some of the streaks and runs underneath. It looks fine over the wood, but over the resin, the imperfections are quite noticeable. In the coming weeks, I'll be wet sanding the finish all the way down to the wood once again and then doing a couple coats of waterlox to finish it properly (hence this won't be available for purchase just yet). Anyways, that aside, I am quite pleased with how this came out, and my mind is already trying to come up with other ways of utilizing wood rings like this in future projects. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them down below!

Every piece of work I see is prettier than one before. This one with being able to see through the resin just really makes it showcase! I am total amazed by your skills.
Mama Mia! I’ve got to quit watching your videos because I want everything you make!! Ha-Ha This is a stunning piece of art! It is out of this world gorgeous! Fantastic work! I love this!! Bravo!
Thank you so much for all your support! I really appreciate it!
Apart from the nice work you did, feeling of the video is really nice. I used to watch 40 minutes long wooden ring making videos. This reminded me that. Really nice and calming feeling. It was about 8 or 10 years ago and most of the videos like this had a personality back then. I hope this makes sense.
Thank you, Evren! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
That looks absolutely amazing! 👏👏👍👍
That’s beautiful and so precise, the colour and wood grain go together perfectly. 👍🏻
Thank you, Kev! Glad you like it!
real NICE bowl Davis
Thanks, Jeff!
Stunning! I just can never understand how the geometric patterns emerge out of lathe turning--it's always a delightful surprise! This is a gorgeous piece--wow!
Thank you so much, Molly! I'm glad you like it!
Beautiful & very creative- - those shades of blue are gorgeous!…lots of respect for the process, time, and energy that goes into making these magnificent pieces!👏👏👌👌🌟🌟

Brilliant use of wood and resin, a very unique piece ... the different shapes you see as you orientate it in different ways is very pleasing to the eye ... absolutely stunning 👍

Just beautiful! The colors, the grain, the design - all of it is lovely. Well-done, and thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you! Glad you like it!
What a fantastically gorgeous bowl! I see you being all clever with the small dowels across the top to hold things in place!!! Very smart! I super look forward to your posts because you create beautiful and thoughtful pieces that seam simple but are actually quite involved and very interesting. I salute you my friend!!!
Thank you so much, Jayson!
First video I saw from you and really love the style of doing a video as well as the project you created. Subscribed! I don't think you need ideas from other turners who seem to compete with the complexity of segmenged turning. That is one form of entertainment to watch, but after seeing a few they all seem so similar and you'd rather watch something you might actually try yourself. Plus, I like to see the end result before I decide to watch the process, how its designed and done, instead of watching a lot of turning to finally see what came out of it. The colors you chose are lovely and something I would choose as well. You just can't go wrong with sea green / emerald / turquoise / petrol blue.
Sos muy creativo, hermosa pieza!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Your designs are fantastic…beautiful!
Ottimo risultato anche se io non amo la resina, preferisco tutto legno.
Nice work. Beautiful bowl.
A very creative work.💛
A lot of work and a beautiful bowl.

@@formanwoodworking You are so welcome!
Great job. Fantastic looking bowl.
Thanks again, David! Glad you like it!
@@formanwoodworking, I have been looking at full sized lathes, and value your opinion. What is your opinion on Rikon lathes? I'm considering the 70-18/24 because it has every single feature I want. The 70-30/40 with electric sliding rail is an absolute beast on paper, but no rotating headstock. Its hard to pass up on something this sturdy, and solidly built. Which do you think is better for ALL aspects of woodturning? Is there a lathe brand or model that is superior in the $5,000 price range? My sincere thanks if you answer me back.
I recommend you buy an 80 or 100 tooth cutoff blade. will totally make your day
That's the next purchase for sure!
Very nice bowl, creative and thanks for sharing the steps.
Thank you!
Très très beau résultat !!!
Stunning
Thank you!
Bela peça amigo parabéns
Perfect top show beautiful beautiful
Thank you, Sidnei!
Very beautiful bowl
Thank you so much!
Can you power sand instead of hand sand? Or would the different densities between wood and resin cause an uneven surface?
How do you figure the amount of resin for a project like this? I’m new to this. Amazing bowl!
how expensive is it to make things like these? I have a Lathe that I suddenly have an urge to dust off and making myself a Resin Bowl sounds like a fun project but I don't think Resin is that cheap. Do you have an idea of what the cost of materials is?
I can't remember how much the oak cost. I didn't need a lot to make the rings, so I'm going to just guess and say the cost for the wood was somewhere between $15-$30. The resin was also ~$30 in total volume used. So, not including other little costs, like the material needed to make the mould, sanding paper, finish, and all that sort of stuff, I'd say it was around $55 give or take.
Oh, and sorry, that was all in Canadian dollars
...stunning!...very well done!...👍 Ideas???...using contrasting woods...adding veneers between pieces...Mayuko Wood Turning segments pretty much everything and may give you some new ideas...he doesn't use resin, so you'd have an advantage for some more incredible pieces... Matt
Thank you for the ideas, Matt! I'll be sure to check those out!
@@formanwoodworking Please understand, I'm no expert...just someone getting started and watching several amazing turners that I've found...of course, you're one of them... Another is BAW Breizh Art Wood...he'll segment pieces, but then incorporate common items such as sticks, bamboo, etc. and use resin as a filler. You might get some ideas from his channel... Anyway...looking forward to see what you come up with next...👍 Matt
Very good, but sometimes it's good to talk, give us a clue what you are doing...
How many days did this take to make man?
