Cap don’t have superpowers other than being stronger than others and ahead of his own timeline. He fights just like any human being.
One thing I really love about this scene is that the people closest to him, the ones who were there to say goodbye, all were wearing suits of armor that he made for them. To me, that makes the line “We’re going to be okay,” even more poetic.

One of the bits that I think gets overlooked is the fact that Pepper, first and foremost, comforted Peter before her own exchange with Tony because she knew it hit him hard.

What messes me up about this is how quiet his death is... he's dying, no final words, no last "I love you" or "be good" or anything. The way he just vacantly stares past his friends, barely conscious and slipping.
His last words were “Hey Pep…”. And I think those are better than his last words being “I am Iron Man.” Not a bad ass line, but just him casually greeting his wife, who he loves more than anything besides Morgan.
He muttered “Kid” too I think, like he thought Peter was still there 😢
That's how death is, when the body and brain shut down and your leaving this earth. You so exhausted and can hardly comprehend what's going on the only thing to go last is what your hearing around you as you pass away. I've seen it multiple times and this is why this scene gets alot of respect cause that's what death is like.

Looking back, his head looks a little awkward on the War Machine suit in this scene. Now I know why this film lost the best visual effects Oscar.
That part when he puts his hand on the side of his face to comfort him was so powerful, to think Tony was the one who was able to make Rhodey walk again and help him when he was so defeated and Rhodey returns the favour he by comforting Tony while dying.

If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of an entire franchise fizzling to nothing when Tony Stark's heart stops.
From a narcissistic man who sells weapons to the man who sacrificed himself to save the universe. It was the most honorable ending. Doesn't change the fact that I cry my eyes out every time I watch him die though. Not only his, all of the deaths are heartbreaking.

Destroyed caps legacy just to get the emotional ending.

5 years and I’m still sobbing over this. I looked up to Tony because he was an ordinary man, making the best of what he had and trying to help. And finally, when he has it all, he makes the sacrifice play.

What's so beautiful about this scene, to me at least, is that even in his dying and arguably braindead state...Tony still couldn't let go until he knew everyone was safe. This is played as a goodbye scene for all of the other characters to pay their respects, but what Pepper said changes it completely for me. It's like she knew she had to literally tell him to rest, because she knows what he's been through and how he's always got his head on a swivel for the next threat. He had to know everyone was ok.

He couldn't speak for his life-long best friend, he couldn't speak for the kid he not only mentored but saw as a son figure, he only had words for the love of his life. Back when the MCU was something of a cultural phenomenon. And Tony’s death was absolutely devastating, not just cause he was a popular superhero, but because we the audience have seen him progress and know him over the span of 11 years, it was like seeing a close friend having sacrificed himself for everything.
The fact pepper tells him it’s okay and lets him pass before she truly grieves is such a moving moment to me. It’s like king Theo den redeeming himself in LOTRROTK and his niece allowing him to pass before embracing his death, allowing him his moment to shine and not being overshadowed by her own grief.

You can see in this scene that Tony Stark really wrapped a suit of iron - not around the world - but around all the people that he loved to keep them safe. And now I’m crying again

In a way Tony did end up putting a suit of armour around the world; his friends and family who were his entire world.
Tony was still grasping for life before Pep said they were going to be alright. He was fighting to respond to Peter, then he smiled and muttered “Hey Pep…” and looked over to Peter and said “Kid…” I never realized it in the movies but seeing it now where I can pause it and listen closely, it’s such a brilliantly acted scene.

Imagine having Pepper as a wife. That's exactly how one would like to make the passage, with the support and assurance of a strong woman, that understood her husband was dying and the last thing he would like to see was her face, smiling, not crying or losing it. Remarkable scene.
1:24, I remember someone close to me gave me this look on his death bed. It was as if he wanted to say sorry for disappointing us. He promised to fight cancer, but he has just given it his all, and his body is just all worn out. The thought of us being devastated that he is gonna go made it difficult for him. So I remember doing what Pepper did. I did my best to hold my tears and forced a smile on my face. I kept assuring him its ok. I told him "Its ok! We are proud of you! Everything is going to be fine. You did great champ". As he closed his eyes I held his hand to sleep, and I kept assuring him its ok and everything is gonna be fine. Few hours later we made the tough choice to no longer have him resuscitated. We just wanted it to be as comfortable as possible. He was 10. Looking that through the difficult ordeal he had dealing with all the medication, I did the best thing for him. Which is to not make him leave this world feeling guilty for us. Sometimes the best thing you can really do at that point is just accept. RIP lil Champ

What really gets me about this scene is Steve Rogers AKA Captain America's face. You could tell despite he and Tony's differences over the years they developed a mutual respect for one another.

To go from an absolutely WILD roaring theater just minutes before with the portals scene, to this where you could hear a pin drop in a packed theater, that was insane and will never experience anything like that ever again. I am lucky I was there on opening night. #LongLiveTheTheater
The Arc Reactor shutting down was the final nail in the coffin for me. As far as I’m aware, the Arc Reactor has remained active at all times, at least up until then. Like a toy with lights, that blue light in his chest was Tony. Once it shut down, that was it.

So much greatness to this scene The emotions are on point. Peter's shaky voice as he says sorry and that they won, Peps face as she hold in her cries of grief and loss... but for some reason what really gets me all the time is the slow zoom on cap and thor. The three of them once fought each other way back in the 1st avengers where a lot of ego was involved. Then they steadily learned from one another and fought like soldiers side by side up until this moment and became brothers. Watching them lose tony hurts a lot and you can see it in each of their faces. Cap and thor rarely cry but Cap struggles to keep a strong face and even thor in his stoic nature after so much loss and pain has tearful eyes. Stark was proof of how far we are willing to go for the ones we love. They all were... -3000 with ❤ Ps cap and Tony did fight again in civil war ofc but their reconciliation made this moment all the more meaningful
Its weird to think back 5 years because when endgame began with a 5 year time jump to the year 2023 seemed so far away when in reality it came in a blink of eye. I know the characters are not real its just weird to think how quick we actually caught up with the endgame timeline.
"You Can Rest Now" the story of every hard working Father/Husband/Son going out to work to provide for their family till their very last breath.
One of the only movies to actually bring me to tears in the movie theatre. The first Iron Man came out just as my friends and I graduated high school. We went to almost every Marvel movie midnight showing for years. So to me this was an end of a decade long journey. The way they did this scene was very well done for all of us to mourn.
What a great set of memories to have with you friends
There's one subtlety in this that always gets me in the feels. It's Peter, calling "We won, Mr. Stark" and then when he gets pulled away he says "I'm sorry, Tony". It's the only time in the movies where Peter EVER uses Tony Stark's first name. Every other time in every movie it's always been "Mr. Stark".

My little man is a huge iron man fan. He was 6 when endgame came out. I debated whether or not to take him to the theater but I finally did. When this scene happened I looked at him, expecting tears, but he didn’t cry. He looked at me and said “he died being the greatest hero, like iron man”. I just realized that her telling him he can rest is a callback to the beginning of the movie. After he figured out time travel and spoke with her on the couch, he was saying he could basically drop his discovery in the lake so they could move on with their lives. She then asked him "but would you be able to rest?"
To all who watched secret invasion and said that this Rhodey is a skrull. Look at his expression when Tony was dying, that's not something a fake one can make.

exactly, if rhodey was really replaced for a LONG time. it wasn’t civil war, they had to have atleast taken him after the battle of earth bc we see his legs fucked up after civil war and throughout infinity war and endgame. rhodey might’ve been a skrull during tony’s funeral, but there is absolutely no way he was a skrull from all the way back to civil war. like are we really saying that skrull rhodey has even used the war machine suit??

@jonathanthemegageek It's been confirmed that he's been a skrull since phase 3 after civil war unfortunately. If they just made him a skrull after Endgame then I'd be okay with it but this is just taking the piss.

Cap at 2:15. You can tell he's remembering when he said "you're not the guy to make the sacrifice play. To lay down on the wire and let the other guy climb over you." Everyone thinks the payoff to that line was sending the nuke into space, but the payoff was really this scene here.

The best part is that Tony actually ISN'T a super-hero. He's a hero with a lot of gadgets, like Batman, but he's just flesh and blood. Cap has his super-soldier serum. Thor is a god. Hulk has his gamma serum. Peter has the spider bite. Wanda has her meta abilities. But Tony just put on a metal power-suit and saved the galaxy. He's just a smart, loving, caring guy with a brash facade - and a heart bigger than most warriors will ever have. Fare thee well, Tony.

I like how Rhodey didn’t need to say anything. They’ve always had an interesting friendship to me. like one that really shouldn’t work on paper but just does. I think it also plays into the fact that despite their prior differences Rhodey has always been a soldier. Just now with a fancy suit. So seeing his once snarky and egotistic friend, become what is in essence a soldier and martyr, there wasnt much he needed to say. Just acknowledge him

No Rhodey wasn’t a skrull in this scene. This was never on any of the writers minds during phase 3. Spiderman No Way Home will probably be the last marvel movie I watch so I’m not accepting any these dumb plot twists that they keep making up on the spot.

When a girl tells you: "Men don't have any feelings. Do they even cry?" . Show them this. No matter how many times I see this scene shivers and tears are coming out. Pepper holds so hard to not crack up until he passes out, because probably she doesn't want him to see her sad in his last moments.

Peter’s shaky breaths are killing me dude
Obviously, the saddest part is Pepper comforting Tony. But what I love about the acting in this scene is how Pepper gently pulls away Peter so she can talk to her husband. Peter is a young kid, not wanting to acknowledge Tony is dying and while he’s not selfish, he isn’t aware that he isn’t the one who should be giving Tony his final goodbye. That just comes with maturity.

I agree. Endgame was truly the end of an era that started with the first Ironman, and here we are. Enough with the superhero movies already. It seems like these days nearly every movie that comes out is a new MCU/DC movie. Looks like Hollywood intends to milk the comic books until the end of time.

I really love this scene. I think most of us would want nothing more than to believe that those we love will be okay when we die, but of course that's never the case. Faced with the death of a loved one, "okay" isn't a thing, but reassuring Tony that they will be okay gives him more peace in his last moment
My mother was dying of Alzheimer's, slowly and miserably. But I finally saw there was nothing left. I told her I would be OK if she needed to go on - and less than 12 hours later she died. Yes, it hurt like Hell - but I was glad I had given her permission to go. That much, at least, gave me peace.
We can only hope they go to a better place
