  • #1. I love how you and everyone at your gym spars w/o trying to punish or hurt your partners. This is perfect. #2. I only train on the heavy bag, so it's difficult to practice many sweeps, but I took a lot from this video that I can use in partner drills to train these sweeps. Great stuff, Jeff!

I was wondering if you could highlight, or otherwise indicate, techniques that can used for street self- defense as opposed to MMA competition techniques, since sometimes martial artists confuse the two?

  • Thanks for the great content as usual Jeff. I was wondering would you say these sweeps are as effective in MMA as they are in Muay Thai sparring sessions? I find kickboxing only rounds to have the stances little different due to no pressure from takedowns. Also I'm not sure I recall seeing many of these sweeps being done in MMA, obviously I see them a lot in Muay Thai matches where the stances are taller.

    @gutts1405@gutts14053 жыл бұрын
    • yes I agree that it is easier to sweep in MMA than Muay Thai because of the stance. MMA guys including myself put more weight on the lead leg for hands and thats where the sweep is effective !

  • I have my first MMA fight in one week against someone shorter, my stance is similar to yours with more emphasis on keeping the distance so I predict he'll be heavier on his lead leg coming forward. One combination I love is the low kick and then a cross using the leverage of pulling your leg back, I got it from you of course, but what I will add is that first foot sweep on the end as he'll probably try and check with his leg up after being hit with the first one leaving him on one leg. Of course it's a fight and anything can happen and I have plenty other combinations, most of which are from you, but still I aim to kill his leg early on and I feel as though this will do that and it'll enable me to take him to the ground if he falls to pass his guard and get in side control, my favorite position

    • @@swekiwi4517 not well lol, the guy I fought was in fact not smaller than me, but instead three inches taller, and SEVEN kg heavier (nearly 15lbs, a weight class and some), he was also more experienced although I had superior technique and he was older, basically got beat up for 40 seconds by a grown ass man. He admitted he knew I was technically better and so he didn't want a technical fight so he just came out swinging and knew my lack of experience meant I had little to no composure. I came out happy though because I didn't get hurt or rocked and it was a really early stoppage like the ref stopped the fight as I was throwing a punch and I was stable enough to pull the punch when he stopped it. Happy though because it can't get much worse than that night and I came out laughing. (PS, it was a fight for charity and that's why there was a massive weight difference and I only found out about the opponent switch two days before)
