  • You know, a historically inaccurate movie used to make PT Barnum look good and trick people into spending money is exactly the the kind of thing Barnum would do. So, in a way, this movie really does capture his spirit.

    • @@ELisa-qf2mw He was actually kind of a mix of a bunch of people, mainly Bailey and with a bit of General Tom Thumb (from a Documentary I saw, apparently Tom was an actual friend to Barnum, he made him America's first celebrity and after they went their separate ways he continued to tour America and helped Barnum when his Museum Burned, like Efron does in the last bit of the movie). Now that I think about it, They probably could have been more historically acurate and still kept Barnum sympathetic had they focused on his relationship with Tom Thumb but I guess there ain't a lot of little people who can sing like Zac Efron.

    • Agreed, but it's still based on something that people have heard of, making it more familiar, which means they don't have to try as hard to sell it. It's the difference between people being like "Oh it's a musical about PT Barnum" and "Circus movie musical." The first generates more recognition in the audience. Not saying it always makes sense, I agree this should've been a completely original story, I'm just saying that's how studio execs think.

      @AcolytesOfHorror@AcolytesOfHorror6 жыл бұрын
  • Fun fact: In Barnum’s original “murder” museum. He had a sign that said “This way to the Griffith.” However once you went through that door you were outside the building, and the only way back in was buying another ticket. Basically the first example of clickbait.😂😂😂😂

    @benmcguire2337@benmcguire23376 жыл бұрын
    • The sign said "this way to the egress", essentially meaning the exit, which most people didn't know, they thought it was a sign pointing to another exhibit. The reason for this was he noticed people were lingering in the museum for too long, which was diminishing returns due to the fact more people could not fit in... definitely a problem if they're spending the entire day in the museum. That isn't to say it was a nice thing to do, but it technically wasn't false advertising. It was indeed the exit.

Second, I loved this movie and I think the choice of musical is a dead giveaway they didn't aim for accuracy, as is the fact they didn't go with "based on true story" or any other claim it was based on real persons. • I can. Generic copy-paste pop music that doesn't move the plot forward, doesn't utilize in world characters singing abilities or any creative inspiration of the time period its "representing". It is soulless cash grab songs. Only one, maybe, two songs are directly connected lyrically. They are placed in awkward spots of the story sometimes. This is Me, should have been a big climactic song towards the end, when they finally stand up for themselves. But literally, the next scene, Barnum is ignoring her. Honestly, this was a cheap cash grab the real P.T. Barnum would've been proud of. And that isn't necessarily a good thing.

Also, the best part about this movie is showing how you can take a trait that has caused you misery and turn it into something you profit from by working hard yourself, accepting that the world is the way it is and carving a place for yourself none the less. It is a perfect message to be sent out in an age where people are coddled into emotional fragility and outrage runs amok.

    • Just curious, would you say the same if there was a historical fiction movie depicting Hitler as a war hero? If it's not true and just for entertainment does that always make it okay?

      @Whofan06@Whofan066 жыл бұрын
    • Whofan06 But who would make a movie about Hitler? There was little to no known facts of the good things that he did. Unlike P.T Barnum, who despite his horrible ways, was also known to correct those said ways and changed it, later in his life. But then again, you do have a point. They could've just invented a fictional name that's slightly based on P.T Barnum than using the name itself. This movie and especially it's soundtracks are freaking beautiful, and people shitting on it just because of this one real life person really sucks to see.

    • I figured he must be because I had heard of his show. I personally viewed it as fiction but thought they must have been inspired by the circus of the same name.

    • While I'm not denying barnum was a bad person in real life it isn't really the same thing as making a musical about the one of most objectively evil men in history and potraying him as a war hero. They did address that he had personality deficits although not as much as they really existed. plus like said above hitler didn't appear to have any postive qualities you could focus on.

Anyway, thanks for making this Honest Trailer properly honest and informative! PT was not a nice guy.

    • I saw it because I loved La La Land, but it didn't sit well with me, and I'm bored stiff of Marvel now. I was bored quite a few years ago and I still don't quite understand why people still flock to them. I like sci fi and action, but Marvel films are for the most part bland and forgettable (though exceptions exist). I'll fully concede that TGS was a refreshing change.

      @semanticsamuel936@semanticsamuel9366 жыл бұрын
    • Semantic Samuel, it's called differing tastes. Some people, including me, actually enjoy the Marvel movies. Every movie ever made no matter how "bland and forgettable" will have people who enjoy them, people who hate them and people who are somewhere in between. Why can't we just let people enjoy what they like. PS, I fucking hate musicals.

      @FirstLast-kp9jx@FirstLast-kp9jx6 жыл бұрын
    • Semantic Samuel yeah I was the same, I absolutely loved La La Land so I was hyped for this and it just didn't quite live up, I think in comparison it'd just not as cleverly written, it doesn't have the same complexity to it as la la land and the story line is all very cheesy and predictable. Saying all that, surprisingly perhaps I did like TGS a lot, but I'd comfortably choose la la land any day of the week

      @elliotwilsonpersonal3328@elliotwilsonpersonal33286 жыл бұрын
    • I would never have seen La La Land if it wasn't for my sister. I was back at my parents' house over the weekend and my sister was desperate to see it, so I went with her. Not the sort of film I'd ever have picked out to go and see myself, but I'm glad I did! I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy TGS in terms of a cinematic experience - it's a brilliantly made film. I just found the treatment of Barnum a bit unsavoury.

  • Zendaya is usually a stunt double? please. she worked so hard to learn trapeze and rarely was allowed to use a stunt double. That's irrelevant to the video anyways.

    @drewveflin2842@drewveflin28426 жыл бұрын
    • True. i watched many BTS of this movie and Zendaya definitely did most of the stunts coz the director said he didn't want to use her double as much as possible.

      @mariagenesishiso-an436@mariagenesishiso-an4366 жыл бұрын
    • She did use a stunt double for a few scenes, but the majority was her, i think it was really unfair how they phrased zendaya in this, because she worked extremely hard and even the director said that he wanted to use the double as little as possible

      @katherinemary6272@katherinemary62726 жыл бұрын
    • It's very common for actors to learn the talents of characters they will portray, however, they do this *own their own.* When it is time to film the scenes for the movie, assuming the Insurance Lawyers will even allow the actor to attempt it in the first place, there is often very little chance the Director will prefer the actor's _briefly practiced_ performance over the stunt-double who _does it for a living._ So while there may be "Behind the Scenes" footage of her (or any other actor in any other movie) doing stunts, that is not confirmation that the person in the finished scene will be her. And sometimes they have the actors perform "fake stunts," for the purpose of recording their face so that it can be digitally painted over the face of the stunt double.

      @woogiemonster@woogiemonster6 жыл бұрын
    • Ojisan Kukki all im saying is Zendaya did put in work. whether or not the majority of the trapeze scenes were her, her performance in this movie was incredible and to be summarized by a sentence like "most of the stunts weren't her" bothered me. all im saying

  • Everybody that worked for Barnum became filthy stinking rich. Including the blind old woman who he "owned." She lived longer, wealthier, and consequently probably healthier than she ever would have without Barnum. The "World's Smallest Man!"? Retired the equivalent of a multi-millionaire on amicable terms with Barnum after being in his show for many years, and even meeting his wife there. His show *was* exploitative, but no one came into it not knowing what they were signing up for, and the vast majority of them made a hundred times more money than they every possibly could have without Barnum. And if you think people with disabilities and deformities could have gotten satisfying, respectful work that made even a fraction of that kind of money... than you have a very rosy and incomplete view of this country at that time.

    • @Al Clayton he did many shitty things but it is historically true that freak shows changed in better the life of many. If you do a quick search on the internet you will find out that some of those people become so rich they could retire but they didn't because they enjoy the fame, and the comrade within the circus. They'd be invited to nobles parties as VIP and some even got married with high located people thanks to this connections. When cinema became a thing they would make great actors (you can still find "Freaks" somewhere) in a way not different from Andre The Giant or the guy from Game of Thrones
