The Conservative party admits it has known about at least some of the allegations against Mark Menzies for months - but only suspended the whip in the last day. It's launched an investigation - which is just as well, as the accusations against the Fylde MP are the kind that only beg more questions.
Among them are claims he used campaign funds to pay off quote, "bad people" who'd locked him in his flat in the early hours of the morning. He disputes all the allegations.

What is going on with the Tory party? It's one thing after another ... they're not alone, obviously, but I begin to see why parties are going to such huge lengths to ensure the absolute probity of their candidates (often at the cost of local democratic choice). However, it's the crisis you DON'T see coming that puts the torpedo through your hull in the end; Labour found that with Afzhar Ali - though they were apparently warned - prompting me to think that maybe parties should stop being so sensitive about and frightened of gaffes, and even exposure of criminality, and frankly admit that human beings are fallible and you can never be sure there's nothing nasty lurking in the woodshed. In other words - if a candidate or MP turns out to be a wrong 'un, maybe just accept that it could happen to anyone, and stop trying to make capital out of it.
