Today on the channel we take a look at the method of paint and rust removal I use most in my garage - needle scaling. As an alternative to dustless blasting, sandblasting, wire wheeling and dipping needle scaling is pretty cheap and delivers good results. Tune in to see!!

  • Your big Chief needle-scaler would probably perform a lot better if you had a bigger air compressor. Big air tools are like big block V8's, they need a big fuel source and a lot of flow to run properly. I don't know about the big needle-scaler, but Torque Test Channel found out that Harbor Freights long barrel Chief brand air hammer is made by the same factory that builds the air hammers for Matco. :)

  • Hi there, Yesterday I started removing paint from my Ford 3000 that I am restoring also using a descaler and was pleasantly surprised how good it works. New fresh clean surface for painting.

  • I used them 25 years ago inside of boilers to descale them, boy I hated using them but they work good .

    • They work great around the water tube where they are mandreled onto the tube sheet.

  • I just picked up the small one on sale at Horror Fright a couple of months ago. I just had an exhaust valve out of a Honda mower engine that had heavy deposits on top of the head that my wire wheel wouldn’t touch. Hit it with the needle scaler for a couple of seconds and it was cleaned right up. Definitely well worth adding to the tool collection!

  • hi mate , I've been watching your channel for a while now and i enjoy what you do , don't throw that need gun away its a good one you don't have to apply weight to it as it uses it own weight to operate . and with the needle gun you should oil them every half hour of constant use , inside them is a small piston with a spring inside and the needles are made from tungsten very strong . I'm an industrial painter blaster by trade and i do a lot of rust removal using those sort of tools , and with the paint i hope you use an epoxy primer because its a lot stronger than normal primer and you will find that it protects the steel a lot better to . good job on the tractor too .

    • What do you do between needle scaling and spraying the epoxy primer? Wash and some sort of metal prep?

      @dieseJL@dieseJL Жыл бұрын
    • @@dieseJL after the descaling we blow any crap off with air then wipe it over using epoxy thinners or wax and grease remover then spray epoxy zinc primer , the best ever primer but you must have a clean surface ok.

      @paulthompson3877@paulthompson3877 Жыл бұрын
    • you don't ever do anything to treat rust or etch like metal prep?

      @dieseJL@dieseJL Жыл бұрын
    • @@dieseJL hi there , no there's no need for etch primer ,we only use etch primer on galvanised .as for bare steel after needlegunning it's cleaned then epoxy primered.

  • Not cheap (depending on your labor rate) but a hand held fiber laser gets rid of rust and paint faster than anything. You can use the laser welder or buy the even fancier machines dedicated for paint and rust removal. Second to this is water injected sand blasting so there is no dust or ricocheting particles. It's more or less akin to pressure washing in appearance but it is as fast or faster than blasting. Here's an example: kzhead.info/sun/ldqteZSpeX5ndZs/bejne.htmlfeature=shared Nice channel, BTW!

  • Grind the tips flat, once they round they're not as effective.

  • Seems like it takes double the time and it doesn’t really get it as clean as you could with a sandblaster. I can see this being useful for some things but definitely not the best alternative
