Barty is a breath of fresh air in the women's game. Her variety/old school style is a joy to watch, as opposed to the one dimensional slogging of Sharapova and so many players out there. That sliced backhand drew gasps of awe at Wimbledon this year!

Call me delusional, but this is the match that set everything for Barty. The turning point from her already decent career to something no one ever expect. The titles, the confidence, this is her rite of passage. Sharapova missed her chance and her body betrayed her despite she still wanted to play badly. But at least she can rest well now and continue her personal life

It's a shame that with Sharapova's height she should be able to blast and gain easy points from her serve, which sadly is not the case. She came from Bolleteri, a prestigious tennis academy and have had different coaches during her career, yet her serve has not improved at all and this has been her waterloo. Too bad, if she only had a reliable serve weapon, she would have won more grandslams and would have had avoided injuries to her shoulder due to inferior serve motion.

In her book, Maria wasn't of a high opinion about Bolleteri school. When young, Maria had an extremely powerful serve. Unfortunately, the serve technique was not forgiving to her shoulder. She wrote in her book that one coach pointed this out, but no one really cared since it was so powerful. Then the surgery, and the need to change the technique. It didn't yet return to its original power.

Maria is in trouble. Off balance on all of her groundstrokes and a second serve she simply could not land. She only has one game plan and has to use that exceptionally well to win against players who can disrupt her game - which she failed today today as she has for the last few years. We may never see her go deep in a slam again

I’m very glad Dopapova is out of the AO - thanks Ash. On the other hand even though Barty played well and kept her calm enough to close it out, it seems like much of the time she’s content to just push the ball. Even at the net she sometimes volleys right back to her opponent. Just watched Kerber (another wall of sorts) get thrashed by Danielle Collins - I wonder if power players will dominate more than touch players in the post-Serena era? It’s too early to say, I think. Sure there are big hitters like Osaka and Keys, but there are still plenty of good, creative shot makers - Hsieh, Sevastova, Kasatkina. I have a feeling there will always be room for all types of players in women’s tennis, at least more so than the ATP, where servebots and guys who just blast every shot like Kyrgios are on the rise. Once Feds, Rafa, Nole, and Murray retire, I hope some players with as much finesse as pure power are able to keep the game interesting. Same for the WTA. Again, congrats @ashbar and see ya 👋🏼 Maria.

get serious folks...these top players (all sports) are all doping -up with ped's.....look at barry bonds..at age 30-37--he got alot better....big poppy with the redsox...same age range..got better...lance armstrong....i could go on and on and on....now u have serena late in her career still dominating with power though greatly overweight...and when challenged with ped official at her house-sarena rushes into her "panic room" to avoid being tested......womens tennis(and now even the men) is so one -dimensional.....all baseline strokes back and forth..back and forth....not one women since navratilova has served and volleyed...no one rushing to the net after hitting great deep angled returns(like sharapova did) only to have her great returns bunted back with a weak slice like barty did(to her credit)....and serena because she's so much smarter and stronger than all the other girls never has to move from the center of the court....she knows no one will rush the net to put away the point...no one was as great a baseline player then chrissy everett with her passing shots and angled crosscourts....but it still wasn't enough most of the time to beat navratilova's serve and volley...

It's a shame that with Sharapova's height she should be able to blast and gain easy points from her serve, which sadly is not the case. She came from Bolleteri, a prestigious tennis academy and have had different coaches during her career, yet her serve has not improved at all and this has been her waterloo. Too bad, if she only had a reliable serve weapon, she would have won more grandslams and would have had avoided injuries to her shoulder due to inferior serve motion.
Maria had amazing serve till 2008 which won her free points. She had to change her motion after surgery

Maria is in trouble. Off balance on all of her groundstrokes and a second serve she simply could not land. She only has one game plan and has to use that exceptionally well to win against players who can disrupt her game - which she failed today today as she has for the last few years. We may never see her go deep in a slam again

I’m very glad Dopapova is out of the AO - thanks Ash. On the other hand even though Barty played well and kept her calm enough to close it out, it seems like much of the time she’s content to just push the ball. Even at the net she sometimes volleys right back to her opponent. Just watched Kerber (another wall of sorts) get thrashed by Danielle Collins - I wonder if power players will dominate more than touch players in the post-Serena era? It’s too early to say, I think. Sure there are big hitters like Osaka and Keys, but there are still plenty of good, creative shot makers - Hsieh, Sevastova, Kasatkina. I have a feeling there will always be room for all types of players in women’s tennis, at least more so than the ATP, where servebots and guys who just blast every shot like Kyrgios are on the rise. Once Feds, Rafa, Nole, and Murray retire, I hope some players with as much finesse as pure power are able to keep the game interesting. Same for the WTA. Again, congrats @ashbar and see ya 👋🏼 Maria.
