  • Fun fact: with twins you are allowed three boxes (from personal experience you're gonna need it). With triplets even more. Anyway, the boxes are one of the few things in Finland EVERYONE agrees on. Suggesting taking them away is a political suicide. THAT is how integral the boxes are to Finnish culture.

  • The box was first introduced in late 1930s. Twins will give you 3 boxes, triples will give you 6 boxes. What I heard from my grandparents about it: Finland was extremely poor for a long time after WW2, as big payments to Soviet Union were being made as per the international peace agreement, and baby boxes were literally everything many babies got. It was an incredible thing with tangible importance for many moms and newborns, and that's why it has stayed as an important cultural thing, even if many moms nowadays wouldn't really need it. A status symbol for the nation's history in caring about its citizens. That's why so many want it to stay, including people who aren't going to have children. Also, mothers to be through adoption get one too, even if the child is an older one and won't be able to wear any of the clothing, so that's why the option for taking money is good to have.

All the free stuff for sure helps when you don't have a ton of money. 170€ vs the value for all the stuff included makes this box a clear choice. I love that Finland provides this, I'm certain it means a lot to first-time parents!

Also, the support money gets larger for each subsequent child, so for example if you have 1 child, you get 95€/month from the state. The 2nd gets 105€/month, 3rd gets 135€/month, 4th gets 155€/month and all kids beyond that get 175€/month. So if you have 5 kids, the state pays you a monthly 665€. And if you're a single parent, the amount per child increases by 50€/month.

  • I think the mitten clips is Nordic, because I seen them in Norway and Sweden, also pantyhose/ stockings for both girl and boys in winter. Most clothes get softer when you wash them and the ones you didnt like, used them for emergency trousers.

    • I don't know about the mitten clips, I'm from New England and had them as a child. So did the other kids in my class. I also had the mittens that connected with a string through my coat, but I didn't like them.

  • Congrats, it seems thats getting closer to see the baby. I got the finnish maternity package eventhough i was living in Vietnam as when i was pregnant my second baby from Kela, unfortunatelly i cant get as a package due to delivery cost and need to choose as a cash due to delivery cost. My Japanese friend told me that she ordered/bought the package for her son from one of Finnish company who sell the similar package and deliver it worldwide, so basically even non Finnish residents we could ordered (i heard that the stuffs depend on the weather we’re staying).

  • Congratulations on receiving your baby box! So Much Cool Stuff! *Video idea* for you guys: You can choose between the box and the cash (E170). How much of the contents of the box could you buy for E170, I wonder? Half? A quarter? (...prices being notoriously high in Finland). Anyway, well done and all the best!

    • Biggest reason is that you only get that box if you go to maternity clinic for checkups. And because mothers come to checkups we have really low death rate what comes to babys.

    • I know, it was tought from start that mothers should go at check ups to get this, when the started give them, Iam 3 generation, my grandma was also getting them whit mum and her sisters and two brothers... But today, if you look st Kela homepage, read it says mums must have been before 4 months writen in to get this, but I dont they say no to mothers who get to know late, they are pregnant. What I meant is, is has been news all around world, that finnish thinking, child should sleep in box, helps then from not die earlly, also effects are smoking, to hot etc... Cheack ups helps to see when baby is stumic, earlly problems etc.. but the tought babies sleeps in a box is so they should not die, this is after care, so baby should be as safe as in mother stumic. Thats reason for the madress in botton, To easy explain...

  • I wish the U.S. had babies boxes. At my oldest baby shower, some of my mom and in-laws' gifts were from when they had children, which was nice. However, I did have to throw some things out because they were outdated. I had to buy some updated things. My second child was born during the pandemic and did not have any new things. But I love this baby box idea. I wish Finland would send me a baby box for baby number three.
