Having to work side by side with contractors whose skills are not as good as your own must be a real challenge. However, you are able to do this, and still maintain such amazing humility. You are a true treasure.

  • It's a clever idea that you need to wait for tiles until you can decide where the niche should be according to the size of the tiles. However keeping in tradition with the grand scale of the chateau, the niche shouldn't be just big enough to fit the bottles but also a lot of space above the bottles. Looks more intentional than just stuffed/boxed in. This also gives the opportunity to switch for another size bottles later if needed. Don't box yourself in (pun intended).

  • 20 years ago, my husband and I renovated our newly purchased 100-hundred-year-old bungalow (not that old in comparison to your chateau but quite old for New Zealand). Anyway, I naively did a lot of sanding of the old paint without a much protective gear - perhaps a dust mask only. Upon completing our renovation, we moved in and expanded our family with our 2nd kiddo. Sadly, he was born with special needs which proceeded with many investigations to try and find out why and how - although it turns out he has a rare genetic syndrome, he did have high levels of lead in his blood, and although he was born after our renovation took place it has been thought that I likely had lead poisoning prior to getting pregnant. So yeah, long story short, caution when removing old paint is an absolute must! On a positive note, I really enjoyed this episode - thanks for the many laughs. xo

  • Make the niche tall enough for shampoo and conditioner bottles. It will also need to be wide enough to accommodate those two bottles. But, ideally, it needs to be wide enough to hold at least 4 bottles as men typically use different hair products than women and you will also need room for shower gel/ soap. Or you can make two niches and make them on each side of the water lines creating balance and proportion.

    • Yes, I agree! My husband was helping our 85 year old gentleman friend make bathroom renovation decisions. They ademently disagreed with me on the width size of the niche in the master bathroom.......they now agree I was right! They listened to me when they got to the guest bath.

  • Regarding the niche, designing the location according to the tiles is a simply elegant solution to the problem. Also, be sure to take into account how high some shampoo bottles can be and as to the width, how many products you are likely to use. Anna might want to take an inventory of the product you both regularly use in the shower and govern the width and height accordingly. Just a thought!

  • I feel for you, Anna! In my not-so-old home (90 years) I always assume the worst and test for lead before disturbing paint. Also you want to use a knife to cut through the paint to expose all the layers that have been painted over time, so you can test all the layers. Good luck! It's such a pain removing lead paint - sealing off the area, covering yourself adequately, not being able to use any tools that will generate dust. But you're in winter, which should help - I've often found myself removing lead in the height of summer, which is no fun when wearing respirators and plastic suits!

    @tpdoolin8445@tpdoolin84455 ай бұрын

  • Dust is an issue, keep children out if they have not been in their already exposed . Secondary exposure: the dog will need bathing before the girls play with him. The girls and both of you will need to be tested. Children especially since you already know heavy metals are a neurotoxin. Treat that area of the house as a hazard zone until you have sealed the layers of paint. This is a messy business and it will be expensive to deal with.

    • @@karinskioslobod The same applies in Canada. There likely is in France, but when doing this kind of work we have more than a few pages of regulations to be adhered to, where just in masks alone there are several 'grades' specified for wood dust (some of which is very toxic), plaster, paint, stone, ceramic and more. Our federal National Research Council scientists keep the trades up to date on all of this. Anna would be aware too, as some art colleges include a course on toxins in the arts. PPE all the time; it is that simple (including the ears to keep dust out).

  • Uninsulated Plasterboard installed on an External facing wall will cause damp. The Plasterboard will sweat as the internal room temperature is higher than the cold wall it faces onto. This will lead to penetrating damp appearing over time as moisture will accumulate on the back of the Plasterboard and eventually seep through the Plasterboard. The correct method is to use Insulated Plasterboard only whenever you are covering an External Facing wall - the insulation will stop the sweating issue.

    • I believe that is why that wall has the metal studs for both the plumbing and insulation, especially as it is just the outer brick wall. ❤

      @ruthugo9342@ruthugo93425 ай бұрын
    • @@ruthugo9342 the metal stud's will directly transfer the cold of the outside wall directly onto the rear surface of the plasterboard. There is no thermal break. Insulating in-between the studs is futile as there is a direct contact made by the metal stud to the outer wall. So the rear of the plasterboard will be cooled by the direct contact to the outer wall facilitated via the metal stud, while the interior face of the plasterboard will be warmed by the interior room temperature = moisture. What happens is similar to what you see when you open your curtains and shutters on a cold morning - your windows are covered in condensation. This is happening on the Plasterboard, but you don't see it as it happens on the backside. Eventually the plasterboard becomes very damp and you start to see signs of moisture on the front side (staining of your wallpaper/painted surface). Once wet the only way to fix the issue is to remove the plasterboard - it will not dry out as Plasterboard is made from Gypsum and isn't a breathable material. The correct technique is to install an insulated plasterboard using the Dot and Dab method, with additional screw fixings directly into the wall behind.

      @paullynch277@paullynch2775 ай бұрын
    • @@paullynch277 ah fair enough. Thanks for your thorough explanation! Lol. I hadn't considered the fact the metal stud was in contact with the wall.

Otherwise we require remediation, similar to asbestos. But as our home is over 100 years old, anytime we drill into the wall, we always have to be super careful and clean up immediately. The best was when the house next door to us power washed all the old paint off, it went everywhere on our property amd contained lead. Sigh...

I'm sure you're aware that lead is most dangerous for children, so the kids should get tested, too. As someone who is almost superhuman, I'm sure Philipp is immune to its effects. And don't forget to bag up your scrapings & vacuum dust & dispose of it in a hazmat dump. I suspect virtually all of the paint that was in the chateau when you bought it contains lead. • Lead paint or lead-based paint is paint containing lead. Lead is added to paint to accelerate drying, increase durability, maintain a fresh appearance, and resist moisture that causes corrosion. It is one of the main health and environmental hazards associated with paint. Lead paint has been generally phased out of use due to the toxic nature of lead. Alternatives such as water-based, lead-free traffic paint are readily available. In some countries, lead continues to be added to paint intended for domestic use, whereas countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have regulations prohibiting its use. However, lead paint may still be found in older properties painted prior to the introduction of such regulations. Although lead has been banned from household paints in the United States since 1978, it may still be found in road marking paint. Lead paint is hazardous. It can cause nervous system damage, stunted growth, kidney damage, and delayed development. It is associated with high violent crime rates. It is dangerous to children because it tastes sweet, therefore encouraging children to put lead chips and toys with lead dust in their mouths. Lead paint can cause reproductive problems, including a decrease in sperm concentration in men. Lead is also considered a likely carcinogen. High levels of exposure can be lethal. As of 30 December 2021, these are the places with confirmed lead paint laws according to the WHO Global Health Observatory Database: While France is included, to learn whether your country is also included, please go to Wikipedia: Lead Paint

  • When facing the shower plumbing pipes, you should put the niche on the right wall. Make it long, centered in the wall. That way you can put your soap, shampoo etc without looking jammed up and cluttered.

  • No, Phillip, lead poisoning has nothing to do with it. Benoit’s comments and laughter said it all. 😂🤣😂 I’m sure Vincent just shakes his head. Ana, you really shouldn’t leave Phillip unsupervised.

  • Wow, this episode was again sooooo funny! The editing you made while carrying this boards upstairs with the sound of racing cars was hilarious! And Pillips measuerment are still on point, hihi! To think of bluring out your faces because of awkardness was the best part! Poor Anna, to deal with all of this ! But in all honesty, Anna, I´m so glad that you are not poisened and hope, the rest of this 22.2 Micro gramm are gone soon! So much progress, and I enjoyed watching so much again! Thank you

    • The lead level required to cause problems in children is far far below what is considered a problem for adults. The max amount a child should have is 3.5 mcg/dL. If Anna has 33...well that is not desirable, but for the kids if they have anything approaching that it is an emergency because that is 10 times the level considered safe for children (though any doctor will tell you there is no safe level of lead for children). I'm a medical writer specializing in pediatrics.

  • I wonder how many people considered skipping this video due to the off-putting topic of "lead paint." If you love to fix things up, that's a real slow down, a "groan." I put off watching this one for a week, but decided to watch it before this week's episode. I and they would have missed possibly the funniest episode to date, and the most well done! The whole face blurring thing elicits a lot of satisfying giggles! And hooray that Anna is OK! But check the kids! I always thought lead paint was of the most concern for children, and there has to have been a lot of paint crumbling to dust and getting tracked about.

  • Hope everyone is healthy! That’s most important. Just a thought on the niche - we recently put in a corner niche that attaches to the tile with a suction mechanism. One uses a small pump to inflate the suction area and it stays very securely. One can also move it to any spot on any corner without damaging the tile. I was hesitant initially thinking it would not hold well but our plumber convinced me and it has been excellent! Such a funny episode 😂 thanks for the great entertainment.
