How EXPENSIVE Yachts Are Made in Factories? (Mega Factories Video)
A yacht is a sail or power vessel used for pleasure, cruising, or racing. There is no standard definition, so the term applies to such vessels that have a cabin with amenities that accommodate overnight use. To be termed a yacht, as opposed to a boat, such a pleasure vessel is likely to be at least 33 feet (10 m) in length and may have been judged to have good aesthetic qualities.
Originally, all yachts were made of wood, using a wooden keel and ribs, clad with planks. These materials were supplanted with iron or steel in steam yachts. In the 1960s fiberglass became a prevalent material. These materials and others continue in use. Whereas yachts of 79 feet (24 m) and below may be constructed of fiberglass, larger yachts are more likely to be constructed of steel, aluminum or composite fiber-reinforced plastic.
- Wood construction, using conventional planks over ribs continues. Hard-chined boats made with plywood is an infrequent technique. Whereas yachts made with the WEST system-plies of wood strips, soaked in epoxy and applied over the boat frame-provide a durable, lightweight and robust hull.
- Metal hulls from steel or aluminum offer the opportunity for welding components to a completely watertight hull. Both metals are vulnerable to damage due to electrolysis. Steel is easy to repair in boatyards around the world, whereas aluminum is a much lighter material.
- Fiberglass construction is best suited for mass-produced yachts, using a mold and is therefore the most prevalent material. Fiberglass skins comprise plies of roving (glass fabric) and matting, soaked in resin for the hull. Decks typically have a core of balsa or PVC foam between layers of glass mat. Both elements of construction are vulnerable to intrusion of water and the development of blisters.

The image of the traditional Boatyard constructing yachts is just that - an image! This is a factory production line with time and motion analysis and as much automation as possible, to speed up construction and lower costs. Its made with about as much care as a £5 Kettle from China, which is to say as much as is necessary to produce an acceptable product. There is nothing wrong with the £5 Kettles, they provide reliable service for many years whilst being affordable. I suspect that the savings made by manufacturing yachts on a factory production line aren't passed on to the buyers in the same way that the kettles are.
I agree with you 100%. For "traditional Boatyard construction" you can't beat Burger Boat Company in Manitowoc, WI. Each yacht is custom designed & built - no "cookie-cutter massed produced B.S. and they even have their own Metal and mechanical/hydraulic fabrication, machining, plumbing and HVAC shops. Best of all it's "American Made" They've been building QUALITY boats since 1863.

I loved how they didn't laminate in the floor pan and just glued it. That's why I will never buy a Bavaria. Also loved the part where "yatch" is used repeatedly even though in the video there's a truck with the word "yacht" on it right there. I mean... QA much?

There is no standard definition," The standard definition for a yacht is anything over 10 meters/33 feet is considered a yacht. Anything over 24 meters/78 feet is considered a super yacht. Very cool video, really would have loved to have seen them build a MV(motor vessel) instead of a sailboat.
