This is the moment 5 hungry hyenas corner and devour a zebra with broken back feet while it tries its best to escape the predators.

This ruthless sighting was captured by 28-year-old, guide/manager at Royal Safari’s, Matthew Roach, while on a sunset game drive with his guests in Kruger National Park.
Matthew tells LatestSightings.com the story: “It was a good afternoon out on my usual sunset/night drive. I had six guests with me that day and another safari vehicle with a guide following close by. We had spent the afternoon slowly making our way to a leopard that had been hanging around for the past few days in hopes that we might find her and her cub.”
“We were lucky enough to find her and spend 10 minutes with her before moving on. Unfortunately, her cub was not around. As we left the sighting a vehicle approached us and told us there were hyena blocking the road ahead. We went to investigate! As we drove around the first corner, we spotted five hyenas cornering a zebra in the road - they were not allowing it to leave.”
“Immediately we noticed the zebras back legs had both been severely damaged and the zebra couldn't run or kick properly anymore - it was defenseless. We all knew it was not looking good for the zebra. It was really sad to see such a beautiful animal in such a state of panic, however, from what we saw, the zebra put up a good fight. Unfortunately, the numbers were stacked against the zebra from the beginning. It was a conflicting sighting as it was special to see a unique catch, but at the same time, it was very depressing to watch.”
“The sightings ended with more hyena joining to feast on the zebra. The hyena pulled out the insides of the zebra and after 45 minutes of watching we all decided as a group that we had seen enough and carried on back to camp to go and have dinner.”
“The only reason we stayed as long as we did was because it was some of my guests first ever game drive. I explained that this sighting could be a once in a lifetime sighting although it was tough to watch. As a guide for the last 7 years, I knew this was a sighting I would not stumble upon again any time soon. Unfortunately, it was a very sad hunt, but we always have the choice to watch or not. Luckily, this sighting was extremely quiet as the noises can be quite disturbing. I always tell my guests that if it is too much we can always leave.”

  • As someone who studied carnivores for years… I’ve got something to say. Hyenas are personally one of my favorite animals. They’re amazing animals and are the most social carnivorous mammal. I do however think it’s nasty how they eat their prey alive, but I’ve always wondered why they do that because they’re capable of killing a prey animal much larger than themselves because they have a bit force of over 1,000 pounds. Nature is brutal, but these animals gotta catch prey somehow. I’ll NEVER understand why so many people hate hyenas because animals such as bears, lions, and crocodiles often eat their prey alive too while you’re all rooting for them. Ofc I feel pity for the zebra and other prey animals, but predators have to eat certain ones most likely for nutrition purposes or because there is a lack of food. It seems like you all hate hyenas because of the lion king, which is the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard. That’s a kids movie, grow a brain. Plus humans have murdered other people and kill animals every single day in even worse ways. My point is that nature is brutal and it is the way it is, each animal has their own way of achieving food in order to survive and feed their families.

  • Edit: I have removed part of my comment because. Upon hindsight it seemed irrelevant to the video and the last thing I wanted to do was upset the armchair critics with the story of my torn Achilles. I can only imagine how agonising it would be for this Zebra. But you have to remember this is the only way Hyena are able to bring down such large prey. As brutal as it is, this is how they have to survive. They may have one of the most powerful bite forces in the animal kingdom, however their teeth lack the size and length typically needed to completely puncture and deliver a fatal bite and faster killing (for larger prey at least) as for example a Lion would. So they need to eat as best they know how, and as fast as possible because they know they aren’t the most efficient or largest predator out there.

If the abdomen is destroyed, it will quickly cause unconsciousness. within minutes The body will lose a lot of blood. leading to rapid death Although not as fast as being bitten in the neck But it's better than being eaten alive in the same way most bears do. Bears are extremely strong animals. Therefore, it is usually not worried that the victim will be able to resist it. Many times the bear's prey is left alive for days in the nest.

  • You can draw a parallel between Animals as a whole, and Humans. Just like there are those animals that feed on the weak (like that poor Zebra), among Humans, there are people who constantly take advantage of the weak. This is at the macro level (Like the so-called Advanced countries taking advantage of the Developing countries), and at the micro level (Executives, Managers calling themselves leaders constantly taking advantage of the workers / Employees by significantly underpaying them). As bad as those hyenas (Crocodiles also) may appear at least they are eating to satisfy their primal instinct (to live), unlike the Humans who are killing others even though they are not facing any survival issues.
