Fun fact! Arthur Conan Doyle would have HATED to be called "the author of Sherlock Holmes" because he actually wanted to be known for his romance novels, which were poorly received and actually quite bad. He even tried to end the series by killing Sherlock, but the British masses were extremely upset by it. People genuinely mourned the character and took to wearing black arm bands as a symbol of mourning and protest of his death. Ultimately Doyle caved and brought Sherlock back to life
Stop that’s so funny😭
damn nn
Did he kill Watson too?
That happens all the time. People work hard on the things they want to be known for. Then some little thing they don’t care about and do for fun, that’s what gets them famous. I’m pretty sure that AA Milne (who wrote Winnie The Pooh) and Beatrix Potter worked in scientific research but then wrote books for their kids one day and that’s what got them famous.
@@AutomaticDuck300 More than a couple of KZheadrs probably fell into their niche this way

This description is so sophisticated and funny. I love it

Top g
not only upstaging them - paying them for the trick legitimately and then upstaging them
The reason he exposed spiritualists and side-show performers was because they deceive the audience by not telling them it’s a trick. A magician tells you that they’re lying to you, and then they do the trick. The side-show performers tell you that they have superhuman/supernatural abilities when they really don’t.
sword swallowers do literally swallow swords though. like, thats an ability that is built up and trained for and takes years of methodology thats been passed down for centuries. of all the sideshow performers to expose, those ones is just petty.
@@alexkilgore7329 Houdini was exposing the performers who "cheat" their tricks. He claimed that some sword swallowers swallowed a metal sheath/tube before doing the actual trick. So, I can see why he would expose those people, as they were deliberately deceiving people.
This is a good point.
This makes sense. It’s wrong af to lie to grieving people
I really think those people truly believe they have supernatural abilities hey have convinced themselves of it

@16:10 Ryan missed the point there, Houdini didn't go after every side-show magician, he went after only the ones who claimed they are doing miracles. Houdini believed tricks are meant for entertainment, not for luring vulnerable people and making money out of them.
I agree. Ig Ryan confused it with him trying to get revenge or something, which wasn't true. He himself proclaimed that all he did was trick, nd said the same for every other person doing it. I agree with Houdini tbh. Plus he exposing the side tricks is his choice. As Shane said, if someone has th power to do that to him, they can do it, Houdini never stopped them from doing that...
EXACTLY! I didn't think Houdini did it to take down other performers, he wanted to battle those claims of supernatural/otherworldly powers
Houdini was active against con men and charlatans prior to the Doyles stunt, however he did go on a vendetta to prove ALL spiritualism was fake and no more supernatural than anything he did. But there's nothing to suggest that he went after the people who considered themselves entertainers and didn't claim to be supernatural. His crusade is largely why people nowadays don't believe in clairvoyants, mediums, psychics and anyone else that claim supernatural abilities. That crusade and it's result is the definition of vendetta. So Ryan is right about the vendetta but he's wrong that he went after every entertainer.
Seems pretty cool of him tbh
@@rokamayono8590 Yeah, I've always respected Houdini because of that. He knew there were other people who were like he was after the death of his mother, vulnerable and desperate to contact their loved ones, and so he fought to make sure they wouldn't be taken advantage of.
So you're telling me, Harry Houdini was giving TEDtalks about greedy magicians and mediums back in the day?

Whitehead wasn't just randomly trying to punch him. Houdini had a famous act where he'd allow members of the audience to hit him, and he wouldn't even flinch. He'd tighten his muscles and flex in such a way that it didn't really effect him. So that's what that was likely about.
And rumor is that the person punched him before he was ready. Some rumors saying that it was part of the act, but the guy struck before he was ready, and others that the guy did it outside of the act but because of the act.

@@hunterwhite4544 The different realities thing is a theory to try and explain the Mandela Effect. The Mandela Effect is literally just a term for when you misremember something. It’s a real phenomenon.
@Rulya Mórrigan Ard Mhacha While the misinformation effect is real, outside of psychology most people know the Mandela Effect as a wacky theory about alternate realities. The term “Mandela Effect” itself was coin by a self proclaimed paranormal consultant, which is mentioned in almost every article on the subject. It has its own section in the Wikipedia page on the topic. If you google “Mandela effect”, almost every article that shows up will mention the conspiracy theory and disprove it by explaining the science behind it. For postmortem: Hi, med student here. I imagine most people when punching someone's stomach would go for the belly button (umbilical) area or epigastric area, while the appendix is located in the lower right (right iliac) area. While the punch is unlikely to cause the appendicitis, it's likely that it aggravated the already preexisting appendicitis, causing it to burst. A burst appendicitis is always a worse prognosis, because the bacteria spreads easily in the abdominal cavity, causing other complications. Especially in Houdini's case where he postponed treatment for hours while possibly putting his body under more stress by doing his tricks, it's possible the infection had already entered his bloodstream and was too spread out that he didn't survive. I personally believe there wasn't any murder involved, simply a series of unfortunate events that ended with his untimely demise.

Sounds like thanks to people like Harry Houdini dying due to a bad medical practice, my life was saved years later from what they learned.

Same thing happened to me bud. 3 years ago,my Appendix ruptured and Was leaking Pus. Just from what they learned from Harry Houdini's Death, they could just get the damn appendix outta me. I was 10 3 years ago
This one surprised me, I thought the reason for his death wasn't disputed. I read about it years ago, how he died due to being punched in the stomach and not seeking treatment
@@majolko seeing as it hasn’t even been proven that punching someone in the stomach can cause appendicitis or accelerate the severity of it, it’s probably people who just saw the theory online without researching it and accepted it as fact. That Houdini must have been hella strong to last that long with a burst appendix, honestly mad respect.
Fr, when I had an inflamed appendix it was pretty painful
@@haziqraza1757 same I was injected with morphine 3 times and I still could feel the pain
And a broken ankle to boot!
Prove it tard
@@maxraschi7554 here’s a sticker tough guy💩
Who else is binge watching these?
Me
That’s so heartbreaking about Doyle… same with Kipling I don’t know why but authors losing young children is so much more tragic to me than anyone else. Maybe it’s the tortured soul kind of thing
Houdini and Conan Doyle are basically Shane and his fans. Conan Doyle/us: You're supernatural. Houdini/Shane: I don't believe in the supernatural.
Could also be Shane and Ryan. Ryan/Doyle trying to get Shane/Houdini to believe in the supernatural and Shane/Houdini basically just going “you are absolutely wrong and this is the very long list of reasons why”
@@shaunanicole931 that's true
Everyone just gonna ignore that Houdini died on Halloween
I was thinking the same exact thing, pretty creepy
I guess he pretty mess up all those witch craft big time
Just was searching before I posted that exact question lol...
A Houdini Halloween 👻
My grandfather died on Halloween...but it's more scary with Houdini
When my twin sister died of a pulmonary embolism at our home, the wires on every light switch fused. We think she really objected to leaving. It’s a big house!
“That’s not true” “It’s true” “Ryan? Is that true?” “no. :(“

the way ryan looked at him with the smirk 🥺 my heart exploded there bffs
ryan is so cute ♥️
My turtle is named Houdini cause he escaped his tank and we lost him, he is fine now
Wholesome
How is his stomach?
My turtle dissappears all the time as well, I know she's good though.. once I found out her hiding spot.. Buried under the house
well, if you named it after it escaped, i think it doesn't count.
Best comment 👏
I nearly choked when Shane said "You died and your went straight to hell".
“Ryan, is that true?” “…no☹️” 😭I can’t with these guys 😭
Doctor over here. I've never seen appendicitis caused by a trauma, nor is there a "spot" where you hit that can cause appendicitis. It is simply the disruption of the normal flora of bacteria in the appendix causing inflammation. I suspect he had ruptured appendicitis, which has a higher rate of sepsis than the common appendicitis and it did not help that he did not pursue surgery immediately.
We've known it was appendicitis for years. Not sure why NOW people are going "hey, this is suspicious, something else could have happened". Glad a doctor knows what's going on
So you're saying that if an organ breaks then you should go to the hospital to have it repaired? Also this is a question I just came up with but how did they deal with a ruptured appendix before surgery? Was it just a death sentence? Or did people survive it sometimes?
@@GamerGrovyle Theoretically if anything is wrong in your body, there are symptoms that will warrant a clinic/hospital visit. In the case of an appendicitis, the organ will be removed instead of repaired. Good question, I'm not sure how people dealt with ruptured appendix in the past before there was surgery. However, it's important to note that there are many diseases that used to be death sentences (people had very short life expentancies back then) but now have an effective cure, a perfect example of this is tuberculosis.
As I am not a doctor, I only *think* this makes sense.. so I'd be really interested in hearing your opinion on this: Isn't it plausible, that Houdini was killed not by a punch to his appendix, but by a punch to his liver? Especially, say-- if he did have underlying appendicitis that had caused a liver abscess, and the punch then had caused to burst? It's well documented that: a) the liver is easily injured with blunt force blows to the abdomen and b) a ruptured liver abscess would cause sepsis and lead to death. And because he never had an autopsy performed could this not be a possibility that wasn't ruled out? Thank you Dr. Jason if you take the time to read and reply!
i have no idea what you just, respectfully
Shane has such dad energy when he says "Ryan, is that true?" 😂

I think Houdini was septic from the shattered ankle, leading to the apendix rupture and death.
Exactly and the old rule is that a magician never reveals how he did it. Houdini seemed to follow that rule to the letter
I can’t believe Houdini invented cancel culture ugh this queen
I mean, he wasn't trying to de-platform people for their opinions, he was just exposing how their tricks worked.
What is cancel culture? You mean a truth seeker?
@@nosuchthing8 what
I lolled bruh
@@funkyfranx i mean he did try to criminalize their practices
I’m so obsessed with the idea that the guy that wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories fully believed in the supernatural and also fairies
He was smart but had no connection to science
Look, he did a LOT of cocaine.
Maybe if we would all use this knowledge for better we can come up with better physics bc Einstein and Tesla had so much work to do.. we need more people to do this type of research and take it seriously!!
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a great author. But he was a drug addict. It's part of the reason why Sherlock Holmes had a drug problem. Doyle based some of Holmes' personality on himself. Lots of authors do that.
@@ashleydowney1222 Yea, despite my comment I love Sherlock Holmes and the mystery/ who done it genre(s) in general
"They paid me.. they paid me" "Ryaaan, is that truue?" "no :("
I actually thought he had swallowed a key and that was why there was no autopsy, because he didn't wanna give up his secrets even after death.
No one: Dude named Jocelyn: So anyways, I started *punching*
Jocelyn: Dude can I punch you!? Houdini: Y- (WHAM)
That guy annoyed me
Was it just me or did anyone else think that Houdini died during a trick gone wrong???? I-
omg i thought that too, I just started the video and I was waiting for it
Yea so did I? I was so confused
Well technically he did. One of his tricks was to get punched in the stomach without doubling over in pain. Its just that this trick was performed for a sort of impromptu private audience as opposed to a large number of people who paid for tickets amd whatnot
i think it might be because of that movie "now you see me" that came out a few years back bc it's ringing a lot of bells and from what i remember it was heavily based on houdini
@@alyssauwu7722 Yeah. Lionel Shrike died doing the safe in the river trick which was an iconic Houdini act.
I was always told Houdini died from one his own acts, the act being him restrained with locks and chains then put in a cage with locks and then that box was thrown off a bridge. I thought it would be a increadible finale
I miss losing sleep over these types of videos... the music always gets me lol. Sad this type of video ended, not sure why but yeah
They have a channel called Watchers
New Theory: shane is Houdini reincarnated and hasn't unlocked his super magic skills yet
Nope, too big a head, long Icabod limbs. . . ain't tuckin' that in a milk can. . . and never gonna be any skills. Love ya Shane, but no, you are never going to be the new Houdmeister.
He's just not high enough on the skill tree yet
He’s a genie
Yeah he gotta survive 2020 to unlock that level and that ability
He's taking a couple skillshare courses
I love how Shane was like "Ryan... Is that true?" and Ryan said "..No" like a father and son😭🔫
omg saaammmeeee 😂
Maybe he had already appendicitis and when Jocelyn hit him, Houdini's appendix bursted. Hope to see Unsolved team back soon, I love this show. Stay safe.
Imagine spending your entire life coming up with ways to do magic tricks, using all of your wits into finding ways to entertain the audience only to be credited as something supernatural. It's the equivalent of calling someone talented because they're good at it. Not saying that talent does not play a role in it, it's just that people often forget the hard work done and sufferings undergone to reach that level of parameters. No wonder why Houdini discredited those claims as false. Edit: I think the reason why people consider it as supernatural is because they have no explanation for it, forgetting the great efforts of the person.
