  • Fun fact! Arthur Conan Doyle would have HATED to be called "the author of Sherlock Holmes" because he actually wanted to be known for his romance novels, which were poorly received and actually quite bad. He even tried to end the series by killing Sherlock, but the British masses were extremely upset by it. People genuinely mourned the character and took to wearing black arm bands as a symbol of mourning and protest of his death. Ultimately Doyle caved and brought Sherlock back to life

    • That happens all the time. People work hard on the things they want to be known for. Then some little thing they don’t care about and do for fun, that’s what gets them famous. I’m pretty sure that AA Milne (who wrote Winnie The Pooh) and Beatrix Potter worked in scientific research but then wrote books for their kids one day and that’s what got them famous.

  • The reason he exposed spiritualists and side-show performers was because they deceive the audience by not telling them it’s a trick. A magician tells you that they’re lying to you, and then they do the trick. The side-show performers tell you that they have superhuman/supernatural abilities when they really don’t.

    @matthewbdemented@matthewbdemented3 жыл бұрын
    • sword swallowers do literally swallow swords though. like, thats an ability that is built up and trained for and takes years of methodology thats been passed down for centuries. of all the sideshow performers to expose, those ones is just petty.

      @alexkilgore7329@alexkilgore73293 жыл бұрын
    • @@alexkilgore7329 Houdini was exposing the performers who "cheat" their tricks. He claimed that some sword swallowers swallowed a metal sheath/tube before doing the actual trick. So, I can see why he would expose those people, as they were deliberately deceiving people.

  • @16:10 Ryan missed the point there, Houdini didn't go after every side-show magician, he went after only the ones who claimed they are doing miracles. Houdini believed tricks are meant for entertainment, not for luring vulnerable people and making money out of them.

    @mazharsrk26@mazharsrk262 жыл бұрын
    • I agree. Ig Ryan confused it with him trying to get revenge or something, which wasn't true. He himself proclaimed that all he did was trick, nd said the same for every other person doing it. I agree with Houdini tbh. Plus he exposing the side tricks is his choice. As Shane said, if someone has th power to do that to him, they can do it, Houdini never stopped them from doing that...

      @ipshitakanungo3025@ipshitakanungo30252 жыл бұрын
    • EXACTLY! I didn't think Houdini did it to take down other performers, he wanted to battle those claims of supernatural/otherworldly powers

      @mariafernandacruztrejo4382@mariafernandacruztrejo43822 жыл бұрын
    • Houdini was active against con men and charlatans prior to the Doyles stunt, however he did go on a vendetta to prove ALL spiritualism was fake and no more supernatural than anything he did. But there's nothing to suggest that he went after the people who considered themselves entertainers and didn't claim to be supernatural. His crusade is largely why people nowadays don't believe in clairvoyants, mediums, psychics and anyone else that claim supernatural abilities. That crusade and it's result is the definition of vendetta. So Ryan is right about the vendetta but he's wrong that he went after every entertainer.

    • @Rulya Mórrigan Ard Mhacha While the misinformation effect is real, outside of psychology most people know the Mandela Effect as a wacky theory about alternate realities. The term “Mandela Effect” itself was coin by a self proclaimed paranormal consultant, which is mentioned in almost every article on the subject. It has its own section in the Wikipedia page on the topic. If you google “Mandela effect”, almost every article that shows up will mention the conspiracy theory and disprove it by explaining the science behind it. That’s clearly what Hunter White was trying to say, so there really was no need to be nasty about it.

  • For postmortem: Hi, med student here. I imagine most people when punching someone's stomach would go for the belly button (umbilical) area or epigastric area, while the appendix is located in the lower right (right iliac) area. While the punch is unlikely to cause the appendicitis, it's likely that it aggravated the already preexisting appendicitis, causing it to burst. A burst appendicitis is always a worse prognosis, because the bacteria spreads easily in the abdominal cavity, causing other complications. Especially in Houdini's case where he postponed treatment for hours while possibly putting his body under more stress by doing his tricks, it's possible the infection had already entered his bloodstream and was too spread out that he didn't survive. I personally believe there wasn't any murder involved, simply a series of unfortunate events that ended with his untimely demise.

  • Doctor over here. I've never seen appendicitis caused by a trauma, nor is there a "spot" where you hit that can cause appendicitis. It is simply the disruption of the normal flora of bacteria in the appendix causing inflammation. I suspect he had ruptured appendicitis, which has a higher rate of sepsis than the common appendicitis and it did not help that he did not pursue surgery immediately.

    @benjason8863@benjason88633 жыл бұрын
    • We've known it was appendicitis for years. Not sure why NOW people are going "hey, this is suspicious, something else could have happened". Glad a doctor knows what's going on

    • So you're saying that if an organ breaks then you should go to the hospital to have it repaired? Also this is a question I just came up with but how did they deal with a ruptured appendix before surgery? Was it just a death sentence? Or did people survive it sometimes?

      @GamerGrovyle@GamerGrovyle3 жыл бұрын
    • @@GamerGrovyle Theoretically if anything is wrong in your body, there are symptoms that will warrant a clinic/hospital visit. In the case of an appendicitis, the organ will be removed instead of repaired. Good question, I'm not sure how people dealt with ruptured appendix in the past before there was surgery. However, it's important to note that there are many diseases that used to be death sentences (people had very short life expentancies back then) but now have an effective cure, a perfect example of this is tuberculosis.

      @benjason8863@benjason88633 жыл бұрын
    • As I am not a doctor, I only *think* this makes sense.. so I'd be really interested in hearing your opinion on this: Isn't it plausible, that Houdini was killed not by a punch to his appendix, but by a punch to his liver? Especially, say-- if he did have underlying appendicitis that had caused a liver abscess, and the punch then had caused to burst? It's well documented that: a) the liver is easily injured with blunt force blows to the abdomen and b) a ruptured liver abscess would cause sepsis and lead to death. And because he never had an autopsy performed could this not be a possibility that wasn't ruled out? Thank you Dr. Jason if you take the time to read and reply!

  • Imagine spending your entire life coming up with ways to do magic tricks, using all of your wits into finding ways to entertain the audience only to be credited as something supernatural. It's the equivalent of calling someone talented because they're good at it. Not saying that talent does not play a role in it, it's just that people often forget the hard work done and sufferings undergone to reach that level of parameters. No wonder why Houdini discredited those claims as false. Edit: I think the reason why people consider it as supernatural is because they have no explanation for it, forgetting the great efforts of the person.
