There's no mistaking a Dyson vacuum when you see it. Whether you're using an upright ball vacuum, a handheld Cyclone, or a motorhead vacuum, there's something distinctive about their design. And even refurbished, many find them the best on the market.
But the sleek and transparent vacuum we have today is a far cry from the cardboard and duct tape prototype built by a man who had been such a terrible student that his headmaster wondered what he’d do with his life.
It took more than 5,000 prototypes and near-constant financial debts and the threat of bankruptcy for Dyson to go from a company on the brink, to "outselling its competitors 3 to 1", and bringing in billions of dollars every year.
This is the story of Dyson.

  • Telling a child that they are a failure is such nonsense. That child has many years ahead of them to learn and improve. To find something they like to do. The person telling this kid he is failure is most likely over 40. Is not willing to learn new things and his ego is higher than a Boeing 737 while flying. It's crazy how people stop to have an open mind.

    • My Mom was told to stop trying to be an artist because she was blind in one eye and was not able to draw a straight line. Well when she told me this, I just looked her in they eye and asked her to find the straight line in all of my artwork. Me Mom was proud of my ability to draw and paint and had always said she wish she could paint like me. After asking her to find the straight line she went out the next day and enrolled in art lessons. In her 3rd year of art classes she won first prize for her Christmas Sean painting. When she accepted her prize she said, “ I like to thank my daughter for asking me where the straight line was in any of her paintings” I was so proud of my Mom I remember doing a works shop with her and realised I wanted her to shine brightly so I fringed a headache so I was not able to paint😹😹I am so glad that I did the pice she painted is stunning it’s a picture of the coral reef with fish swimming and playing with a couple of turtles swimming around.😊it hangs in the living room to this day as a reminder that she could do anything she put her mind to it. It took me almost 24 years to convince her that she had the same talent as both her sister and myself. Your right people who put children down before they can even attempt to do anything are just too set in their ways and have never developed what was needed for the area I’d designing and creating

Literally cannot fault it and spare original parts are bit hard to find now so when ever time comes, I'll get a newer dyson, it's been battered through 3 house moves, gets used on carpet, wood floors and car/van yet still works as it did on day one and plastics have never cracked they scratched etc but that's it. It's no surprise the success Dyson had and why other Hoover's are not in same category.

    • failure is a better teacher than success. Throw the design together, see what does work and what does not. keep the good bits and improve or completely rethink the bad. Its a far better method than strict analysis for making robust functional systems. More companies should embrace the ideology of failing to succeed instead of booting people out for one mistake.

I have three small wood-shop vacuums, and they don't have bags. Why didn't the big companies do it years ago? Easy answer, just like ink jet printers, the money is in selling new bags, or ink cartridges.

  • "your catalog is boring" I love that argument. Dyson implies with it, that his Vacuum is either exciting and something someone buys as a novelty or it justifies "buying the more economic model". For either customer, dyson is a point of reference, adding emotions to an otherwise boring and arbitrary decision. Brilliant, as even selling few dyson, means giving other customers the feeling of having pick the "economic, but still name brand option".

With no money spent on it after purchase. Then to have a constant money sink. It is because of the initial price (and that I did not understand how much better of a vacuum it is) that I don't have a Dyson, but I am interested now that I have seen this video. Maybe build one on my own that sits in the corner of my room and has a long suction tube. Although right now, I do have a bagless shop-vac.

I purchased it in 2004 and kept it until 2016 when I bought a new one. For 12 years this vacuum never lost its suction and performed better than any Hoover I ever owned.
