It’s time for the biggest showdown in the carpentry industry, Beat The Bully! The concept is simple anyone from the comments either negative or positive is welcome to go head to head with wood bully and see it really is as easy as it looks! 🤌
In this episode we do a Deck Build Off. We have exactly 4 hours and equal piles of lumber and hardware to choose from.
Parameters;
3x3 deck landing 3’ off the ground with guardrails, handrails, custom stairs and skirting.
Big thanks to our special guest judge: Bryan Baeumler from HGTVs Disaster DIY, Leave It To Bryan, Bryan Inc, Island Of Bryan and Renovation Island.

  • For 4 hours, hats off to both of you. I'd still be arguing with my girlfriend about whether or not I need to put a tarp down or just blow the sawdust off the lawn after.

Haven’t read other comments, but if it were me doing this type of challenge I would reach out into the community to see if anyone needs stairs and a landing or what ever your next project is then donate it to the family that needs what your making. Then make a follow on video of you installing it at there house. It’s a win win. A person in need gets a prize and you get more content and accolades/views for your videos. 🤷🏽‍♂️

As with any trade its great to see how other craftsman tackle things differently, because of that there's always something to learn and always new ways to become better, faster, and more precise. • I would be down for this. I would really struggle with this specific challenge though even though I’m a 20 plus year career pro carpenter/woodworker. The reason I would struggle is not having any drawings/plans to work off of combined with the time limit. I’m currently building a very detailed range hood vent in my wood shop that is completely custom and has compound swoops with miters made from solid walnut. But I have time to plan it, draw it in fusion360, and build it in a controlled shop and no time limit (other than not milking the time). The other thing I would like to point out is I don’t think “the bully” should come up with the challenge, he should have an independent carpenter brain storm and plan the challenge. The reason being that the bully has all the time to brainstorm and game plan how he would tackle the challenge while he’s coming up with and planning the challenge himself, while the challenger is walking into it completely blind.

  • I do like using a miter saw in tandem with a digital angle finder (Husky makes a $20 one) for when you have boards joining that aren't on the detent angles (90, 45, etc) or angles that are slightly off of the detent angles. A circ saw only has bevel angle adjustments but if you have a board that needs a bevel cut to join into another board and the angle is some odd angle like 43.5, it's a lot harder to gauge a circ saw to an angle that's not a detent angle and get it perfect. A miter saw can be adjusted to a non-detent angle just as quickly and accurately as you can a detent angle b/c that's what it was designed to do. They are really nice to have on finish carpentry where you need your cuts sealed perfectly. A circ saw is for rough framing but when you get into something with a lot of miters/bevels - especially when it's some odd angle thats where you'll really glad to have a miter saw (but you need something to gauge what that angle is - angle finder)

Also leaves as much space as possible for structural integrity of that board. Can't tell you how many times i've just knotched it, went to bang it into place and the smallest piece snaps off. Ull have to add a 2x6 under the band so u have enough to screw to but it saves u a step and looks much better than the top step being level with the deck floor. . And never rely on toe nails only to attach ur stringers to the deck frame.. get under the deck and screw through the band and into the stringer it'll be much stronger. . U can also toe nail it too but like I say I wouldn't rely on those only

Ik its hidden under the rail, but damn that tool is supposed to stay in the trailer till you fuck up for a reason.

I would either look for a third applicant or go with Brad. Also, having been in the trade for many years, I think 4 hours for this project is too long.

  • My grandfather was a contractor and construction guy for over 35 years, and he was all about building above code. If he had been involved in any challenge, it wouldn't be speed. He always said people can choose one of two options: speed or low cost, because he always built for quality. I'll bet given twice the time, both of these guys could have come up with something that would have made judging nearly impossible.

  • Woodworking is for anyone. Only thing that needs to be known is how to and experience for the project at hand. Also speed isn't best , I've woodworked for 30 years and have seen everything that shouldn't be. Framing is where the rules and know how lay and carpenters finish up. If your sanding your mistakes on a deck you got something a little off , more than likely out of square. Pull a tape across your corners and check before laying flooring. The true test is weathering after build

  • Looking at them from afar, I liked the challenger much more. It looked nicer with the wider steps and the overhangs. But then we got to see it up close and there were certainly problems. Overall, yes the bully should have won. But I still like the look of the other one more.

Little did we know he was having blood clots through his body and was struggling physically through the entire process, having to take breaks fighting off dizzy spells and passing out. He completed the deck the best he could but since his passing about 2 years ago.. the desk hasent really held up.. videos like this encourage me to learn more about wood working and fix it someday.. but man.. its a lot of work!

    • Gotta get that plan finalized before heading to the yard. Draw it out if necessary but at least sit down and work through each process in your head and figure the materials from start to finish. Then give yourself a couple extra boards here and there. Be thorough and have that checklist in your head. Fasteners, anchors, adhesive, shims, paint, application materials etc.

I found out after 2 trips to the lumberyard for a new straight edge and other jig materials that the foot on my bargain brand circular saw was bent. Hard to cut a laminate countertop miter joint that's straight with a faulty tool. Sometimes it happens. Glad the day is over.

  • I'm so impressed with both of them, that's nuts. I mean I get this is a challenge but the format is so constrictive, both these guys are very skilled but the time crunch really didn't reflect that. Well done for completing the challenge though both of you. Edit: I mean the time crunch made it so that they both were doing things they wouldn't do normally in order to slap it together so even if you were great at something every time like mitres or plumb and level you didn't even a chance to get that here. Also no time for finishing, maybe it should be an 8 hour challenge, would alleviate a lot of the issues but that's expensive.

  • Since going into contracting full-time, I can say that I almost NEVER use a chopsaw, I only break it out when I'm doing crown moulding or trim. If you are looking forgetting yourself tools, focus on getting a really good circular saw, put in the hours to use it expertly and you can do almost anything with it -FAST.

    @pk-ou1lj@pk-ou1lj4 ай бұрын
    • Where the chopsaw shines is with smaller timber. You could use a handsaw for those cuts but a chopsaw will generally be quicker and (for most people) more accurate. I think it's worth investing in both. They're not that expensive.

  • I dont know how this popped up but im glad it did...i was glued..... This was ALOT of fun.... Look we cant see everything and angles and dont get a great picture but The judge: needs more of a "user" friendly opnion, not just a construction worker opnion.... Example: the wider stairs get more points because they are much more user friendly...walking up with grocery bags or walking next to a dog.... Steepness of stairs, bully gets the win for older folks, just a nicer design Loved the build battle ❤
