  • When I was in tenth grade, we hosted a Ukrainian refugee family at our home for six weeks (my brother and I had to share a room in the basement while they were with us!) and I memorized a Cyrillic alphabet I found in a dictionary (this was, um, before the internet, LOL) so I could learn the language properly. They taught me how to write the letters in cursive and I got pretty good at it! I can still read printed Cyrillic (I only remember the meaning of a handful of Russian/Ukrainian words and a few verses from songs they taught us) but I've forgotten most of the cursive. This video brings back memories!! The best part was the mom did all the cooking for us, so we ate a lot of Slavic cuisine during their stay! Plus, because we were their only transportation, we went to their church and family events all the time; it was about as immersive a cross-cultural experience as one could have in the small upstate NY town I grew up in. It was an incredible time in my life overall and I still have a great fondness for the people and culture of Russia/Ukraine.
