2023 Toyota Prius Prime vs Mazda3 Turbo vs Subaru WRX // DRAG & ROLL RACE
The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime ($41,360 starting in Canada, $33,445 in the US), the 2023 Mazda 3 Sport GT Turbo ($39,328 starting in Canada, $33,615 in the US) and the 2023 Subaru WRX ($34,851 starting in Canada, $31,625 in the US) have lined up for a drag race. The Prius is surprisingly quick for how efficient it is, but is it quick enough to take on some turbocharged all-wheel drive competition? The Subaru has the most power at 271 hp, and the Mazda has the most torque at 320 lb ft, but the Prius has some hybrid electrical assistance and a whole lot of heart. What happens when these three cars line up for a drag and a roll race? We hope you enjoy the episode! Subscribe!
Huge thanks to @wychita_henricks for loaning us their Mazda 3 Turbo!

A Prius as a rival to the WRX. You wouldn't even have imagined that like 5 years ago
I’ll say 20 years ago 🤦🏿♂️
To me it just shows what Subaru has evolved to. Especially considering late 90's and 00's. It's sad af.
@@TermlessHGWI think you mean “devolved”. Indeed very sad
Well the WRX turned into an embarrassing joke that doesn't deserve the name.

if you told me 10 years ago a prius would even come close to competing with these cars when it comes to speed i wouldn’t believe you. very impressive
It's not lol not close at all sure straight line stock acceleration it's like 2 Cara behind but if you even slightly look at a corner or driving feel it's not even close and if you head to the aftermarket or tuning the gap widens emmensly wrxs are making over 400whp with less than 2k in mods

The Mazda is just such an all-rounder...it was fun to watch it take the first race, and see how well it did in the roll. It has a reliable, long lasting powerplant, and a great interior, and it slips under the radar. These videos are a fun distraction in a mundane day...well done boys!

Oh my, you guys make regular car reviews fun! Thanks! 😀
I feel like the Mazda has a lot of potential with a 2.5 L turbo it seems to already have a significant amount of torque. I would like to see all of them tuned in raced again.
That engine isnt tuned to be sporty. But youre right, a 2.5L turbocharged Inline 4, not a small engine, as far as hatchbacks go. If Mazda wanted it to be sporty they could easily get 300HP out of it. I mean the Ford Focus RS was pumping out 350HP out of a 2.3L turbocharged engine.
There are tunes and even superchargers and bigger turbos after market. This set up stock is super understressed and has tons of potential. There are a few KZheadrs who have mods and set ups between the mazda6 and mazda3. Which share the same 2.5 skyactiv.
Good job Toyota for making PRIUS a competitive, good-looking eco car. The blacked out Mazda3 Turbo looks like a stealth fighter. So cool.

Stock for stock, on the same fuel, I think the ms3 would take it. But good luck finding a stock Mazda speed 3 in good shape.
If i remember correctly the ms3 has an lsd. That would give it a big advantage. However i dont know if that could overcome awd.
@@RandyAugustusDo any of these exist in stock/good shape anymore? :)
@@RandyAugustusnope....if all the variables are the same including octane rating.....the ms3 wont be taking the new turbo 3 with AWD from a dig. But it just may from a roll race because of its slightly higher top end. But its down on torque by 40.....the 0-60 numbers tell all. Whilst the driver of the ms3 is busy fighting torque steer the awd turbo 3 will launch clean every time even on crappy tires.
@@Painting_Inspiration its down by 30 tq. But the ms3 is lighter (barely). Also, the ms3 came with sticky rubber standard. Auto + awd is a compelling case. But Mazda’s automatics are not know for their lighting quick shifting. Also, the new Mazdas are not sports cars; sans miata.

What I’ve learned to appreciate about Toyota is that is not pretentious. The Prius is just an economy car, efficiency minded and built, not trying to be sporty. But those Mazdas look amazing though.

Remember how an STI had nearly the same horsepower as a Mustang? Then Subaru decided to keep the same failing dinosaur of an engine for 20 years.
The WRX has officially died with the VA. Now it is just some awd sedan with a boxer engine

Don't hold your breath. They, like Corolla drivers, are pathetic.

I lowered my Mazda 3 turbo and put a sway bar and strut tower brace on it. Steering feels a lot better. it's not twitchy like the Hyundai n's but it doesn't have the sluggish turn in. Also exhaust mods help the power substantially even without a tune.
The drag race we didn't know we needed.
Turbo cars I have found can be sometimes inconsistent, sometimes they pull very and sometimes not, you never know what you are going to get especially if heat soak is there and it pulls a lot of timing etc.

As a long time Subaru fan, it hurts my soul that they didn’t try to target 300hp and at least a consistent and smooth 5 second zero to 60 in what is likely to be the last generation of non electrified WRX. So many other things on this chasis are improved, just needed the power to match.
I'm actually cool with everything except.. I heard this is the worst steering feel and feedback the WRX has ever had
It’s detuned on purpose. They have the wastegate set at about 12.5 psi from factory with this new generation. Consider that the old WRX and STI were set around 17 and could peak at up to 21ish. Folks have been just doing tunes only and have been getting well over 300 wheel hp and gobs more torque. My guess is that Subaru didn’t want to release a new generation that immediately crapped on the previous generation’s top specs power levels. Also compare the factory boost levels to the Mazda 3 at 16-17psi….. then the GR Corolla, Elantra N, and Civic Type R all peaking over 20psi stock. The WRX is a steal right now.
Is there an STi coming?
Subaru wrx is under reported with power from the factory and the Mazda still beat it. I’m shocked
A small bump in power, and if they hadn't royally screwed the looks...then the wrx might be alright. The Mazda needed a manual. Not a hot hatch with a torque converter.
I'm in this race! I'm in this race! I'm now a camera car😂
A dragy in each vehicle being raced would be appreciated
Red leather interior in the black Mazda 3 Turbo is SWEET!
I mean considering the Prius is the heaviest of the three…literally half the torque and least amount oh horsepower, it did surprisingly well. The Prime is a good looking little car. Toyota should give us a GR version!
The spec chart is not counting the torque available from the electric motor, Toyota never provides that information.
It did even better when you remember the Prius has 195 width energy saving tires when the Mazda3 has 215 all-seasons and the WRX has 245 summers. Toyota did tease a GR Prius though so hopefully it's coming.
@@tpolerex7282yup... it's clearly wrong because otherwise, the engine would have to be spinning at some 14,000 rpm to be reaching its supposed HP rating.
Now if only Mazda offered the turbo in a manual! Also excellent callback to the prius review and the Churchill burn lmao
It’s about the driver at the end of the day 😊 these videos are so fun!
James hiding while closing the window had me dying 😂
It’s kind of sad that the Mazda 3 has less power then a 10 year old Mazdaspeed 3 but I guess the awd helps out. Great race guys!
I owned an 09 Mazdaspeed 3 for 12 years from new. It's not even in the same category as the new one. The old one was such a visceral experience. You really felt connected to the car and it's extremely wild tendencies. It was super charming, and made me smile every time I drove it. The new one is far more refined, quieter, automatic, and less sporty feeling. It's a near luxury car now, competing closer to a BMW 230i than the Mazdaspeed that was wild even when compared to a WRX Sti of it's day. And even without AWD, the old Mazdaspeed 3 could be faster 0-60. I say could be because you had to get the launch dead on to not ruin your run. It took a perfect clutch dump and 2 perfect shifts with a good amount of throttle modulation to get it 60 sub-6's, but it could. But the new one has far broader market appeal than the old
@@JamesKirk1988 I had an ‘11 and miss that car. It had the nastiest bov that sounded like a suppressed gun 🤣 Definitely sub 6 with a few extras added.
A 2009- 2010 Mazda Speed 3 had 40 ftlb less torque than this one. So while having less power, the engines are pretty even.
Sad to see how few of the ms3's are left. I miss both my gen won and even the regular 5sp 2.3hatch. My ms3 was fbo on the stock k04; 320whp, and a bunch of suspension stuff. It was WILD with the delrin mounts and trz transmount...straight rally car sounds. The new mazda is not for me...and now I'm an "adult" and make 4x what I made back then...mazda gave up on us. The real issue with the new 3, is the platform itself isn't good. Torsion beam rear suspension?? No thanks. Making it a speed with a manual and more power/panels wouldn't fix the core of the car...
Love my gen 2 speed 3. 604hp at 37psi 😂
It's pretty simple in 2004 the Prius made only 114HP, then each gen it added only 10-15Hp. The 2004 WRX had 250Hp and today it is only up to 271HP. but the 2023 Prius now makes 220HP. Subaru should have gave the WRX another 100HP.
Excellent Churchill quote reference.

When is the Prius Prime GR coming?
GR Prius vs. WRX STI vs. Mazdaspeed 3
I want to see these three in a track test.
Got the Prime in september. Slapped on wider wheels, coilovers, chassis bracing. It gets 35mpg minimum on the saturday canyon drives. 20 miles uphill, 20 miles down. Battery level wont go down in hybrid mode, but more battery means more response when you need it.
I feel like Mazda is the BMW of the Japanese world. They’re more in tune with the driving dynamics and they’ve always been trying to make their cars more fun in their segment with the zoom zoom. I’m starting to wonder if they under rate their hp numbers as well but they do definitely tune for lots of torque. They seem pretty peppy in against their competition
I'd like to see some of the races on the cutting room floor. Something tells me from what the guy said that the WRX took more than it's fair share of the W's 😂

I was biking around the city and saw, what looked like a sports car parked in someone's garage. It was a Prius and man was I happy to see how it has evolved. The Prius is now cool.
Prius hangs in there pretty good! And while the 3 hatch is the prettiest the Prius is pretty close in that regard too.

As a comparison to show how the Prius has improved - it would be amazing to race the same 3 cars, but their early 2000 versions (if Mazda 3 goes back that far). I know it would be a wipe out for the Prius, but interesting regardless. Cant believe the PRIUS was not 100m behind a WRX and Mazda. Pretty cool. Considering the fuel efficiency of the new Prius too ... its not bad! Shame its not coming to Australia.

Ahh, I love having the Mazda 3 win. It's so remarkably refreshing.
go Mazda3 had mine from new in Feb 2022. still love it so much.
Lets go Mazda! Mazda3 AWD HB owner here, even though it's only an NA, ditch the OE tires, slap on a K&N filter and it's pretty fun to drive. You get the confident inspiring handling and a little bit of intake noise while being a comfortable daily. Pulling time though, it's something common Mazda does, especially with the NA 13:1 compression in the heat. I find that 93 octane over the 87 even in the NA is so much better and responsive. It feels like a different car on 93 when you're passing semitrucks with the AC full blast at 95deg temp.
Handling has been scary for me at times. I still stock tires, what tires you recommend?
I really like the new Prius. My only complaint is the tire size. Last time I checked tire rack there were only 2 options. Hopefully more will become available as more people buy the new Prius.
It actually... looks decent for a change. I've never liked the way the Prius looks, but would absolutely drive the new one if I were in the market for a car.
Bonus of the SE trim. Lot more availability
The cars wheel wells aren’t going to grow. 🤷♂️
I work as a tire tech and you'd be shocked at tire prices for these new cars. Just had a guy yesterday with a 2020 Altima that had 215/45R18 on it. Cheapest option we could order cost was $179. That's just the rubber. No Install. For a shit tire with zero mileage warranty. That's fucking insane. Car tire sizes are fucking out of control these days and it's only getting worse.
If mine finally arrives, i will use 205-55R17 as winter tires and probably the same as summer when the oe ones will be shot.
I think a video on the Mazda 3’s inconsistency would be interesting
You know what, those are 2 fast cars and the Prius holding its own is more than respectable. Very cool
How do you make sure the cars are all lined up and a the same speed for a roll race? or does it not matter as much so being a meter or so off before acceleration doesn't change the result over the whole distance?
The WRX hasn't improved performance in TWENTY YEARS. When it came out in the US, it could hang with- and beat, Mustang GTs. Now it's down 200hp to those. Mazda 3 Turbo is such a letdown. Attractive exterior, great interior and a dud on performance. They seem awfully slow for a 2.5T in a small car. And the Prius. Toyota hit a homerun w/ the new one. It's now good-looking, still super efficient, but decently quick. Of these 3, I'd buy the Prius. **GASP**
Wow, they all performed well. Yes, I'm very impressed with the Prius Prime!
