2023 Toyota Prius Prime vs Mazda3 Turbo vs Subaru WRX // DRAG & ROLL RACE

2023 ж. 13 Қыр.
670 427 Рет қаралды

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime ($41,360 starting in Canada, $33,445 in the US), the 2023 Mazda 3 Sport GT Turbo ($39,328 starting in Canada, $33,615 in the US) and the 2023 Subaru WRX ($34,851 starting in Canada, $31,625 in the US) have lined up for a drag race. The Prius is surprisingly quick for how efficient it is, but is it quick enough to take on some turbocharged all-wheel drive competition? The Subaru has the most power at 271 hp, and the Mazda has the most torque at 320 lb ft, but the Prius has some hybrid electrical assistance and a whole lot of heart. What happens when these three cars line up for a drag and a roll race? We hope you enjoy the episode! Subscribe!
Huge thanks to @wychita_henricks for loaning us their Mazda 3 Turbo!

    • It’s detuned on purpose. They have the wastegate set at about 12.5 psi from factory with this new generation. Consider that the old WRX and STI were set around 17 and could peak at up to 21ish. Folks have been just doing tunes only and have been getting well over 300 wheel hp and gobs more torque. My guess is that Subaru didn’t want to release a new generation that immediately crapped on the previous generation’s top specs power levels. Also compare the factory boost levels to the Mazda 3 at 16-17psi….. then the GR Corolla, Elantra N, and Civic Type R all peaking over 20psi stock. The WRX is a steal right now.

    • I owned an 09 Mazdaspeed 3 for 12 years from new. It's not even in the same category as the new one. The old one was such a visceral experience. You really felt connected to the car and it's extremely wild tendencies. It was super charming, and made me smile every time I drove it. The new one is far more refined, quieter, automatic, and less sporty feeling. It's a near luxury car now, competing closer to a BMW 230i than the Mazdaspeed that was wild even when compared to a WRX Sti of it's day. And even without AWD, the old Mazdaspeed 3 could be faster 0-60. I say could be because you had to get the launch dead on to not ruin your run. It took a perfect clutch dump and 2 perfect shifts with a good amount of throttle modulation to get it 60 sub-6's, but it could. But the new one has far broader market appeal than the old

    • Sad to see how few of the ms3's are left. I miss both my gen won and even the regular 5sp 2.3hatch. My ms3 was fbo on the stock k04; 320whp, and a bunch of suspension stuff. It was WILD with the delrin mounts and trz transmount...straight rally car sounds. The new mazda is not for me...and now I'm an "adult" and make 4x what I made back then...mazda gave up on us. The real issue with the new 3, is the platform itself isn't good. Torsion beam rear suspension?? No thanks. Making it a speed with a manual and more power/panels wouldn't fix the core of the car...

  • It's pretty simple in 2004 the Prius made only 114HP, then each gen it added only 10-15Hp. The 2004 WRX had 250Hp and today it is only up to 271HP. but the 2023 Prius now makes 220HP. Subaru should have gave the WRX another 100HP.

  • I feel like Mazda is the BMW of the Japanese world. They’re more in tune with the driving dynamics and they’ve always been trying to make their cars more fun in their segment with the zoom zoom. I’m starting to wonder if they under rate their hp numbers as well but they do definitely tune for lots of torque. They seem pretty peppy in against their competition

I know it would be a wipe out for the Prius, but interesting regardless. Cant believe the PRIUS was not 100m behind a WRX and Mazda. Pretty cool. Considering the fuel efficiency of the new Prius too ... its not bad! Shame its not coming to Australia.

  • Lets go Mazda! Mazda3 AWD HB owner here, even though it's only an NA, ditch the OE tires, slap on a K&N filter and it's pretty fun to drive. You get the confident inspiring handling and a little bit of intake noise while being a comfortable daily. Pulling time though, it's something common Mazda does, especially with the NA 13:1 compression in the heat. I find that 93 octane over the 87 even in the NA is so much better and responsive. It feels like a different car on 93 when you're passing semitrucks with the AC full blast at 95deg temp.

  • The WRX hasn't improved performance in TWENTY YEARS. When it came out in the US, it could hang with- and beat, Mustang GTs. Now it's down 200hp to those. Mazda 3 Turbo is such a letdown. Attractive exterior, great interior and a dud on performance. They seem awfully slow for a 2.5T in a small car. And the Prius. Toyota hit a homerun w/ the new one. It's now good-looking, still super efficient, but decently quick. Of these 3, I'd buy the Prius. **GASP**
