Power Window Motor Car Wiring - FOR BEGINNERS!
*PARTS LIST IN DESCRIPTION BELOW*
Power window motors can be wired many different ways for many different purposes. This video shows the two ways of how to wire a window motor. One method does not use any relays. The other method uses two 5 pin Bosch style relays. I also explain how the switches work in each circuit and why I might choose one window motor wiring method over the other. Whether you are wiring window motors in your race car or daily driver, this wiring diagram should help!

Whoa! Thank YOU! I really appreciate that! Hopefully your project goes well!
In a regular toyota camry that 1999 how would this work with a 5 pin switch? Also when i use my tester it tells me 2 of the wires are sending power to the switch
@@WiringRescuehow would I make a master switch ( 94 Isuzu rodeo ) my master is 189$ vs making my own ( using your videos ) but I'm trying to figure out how to use 7 6pin switches 4 on driver door ( master ) and the other 3 for each door I've been trying to figure how to do that would you be able to make a video on a DIY master switch?? I would honestly appreciate it
Sir schematic diagram please❤
I love it! Having a electronics background you do a excellent job of breadboarding, and explaining operation. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! I’m glad that so many people enjoy these!
This is the type of channel, that will reach a million followers, after i don't watch it in a year
🎉 Let’s hope so! First I need to hit 100k though. Tell your friends!
Thankyou. I remember doing this a while back you just gave me a great refresher.
That's a great explanation of how each set up works. Being a visual learner that helps a ton. I'm adding power windows and locks to a vehicle that didn't originally have them so this is definitely a light in the tunnel 😅.
I am so happy I came across this. I am finishing a body harness for my Foxbody and was really trying to get away from a expensive window specific relay. This works perfectly for me.
That’s awesome! I’m glad that you found it helpful! Good luck with the mustang project, Foxbody’s are frickin awesome.
Thank you!!!!! After watching a million videos and burning so many fuses your video really helped great work and very helpful
Can you do this with sunroof motor?
I love your videos. I feel like pulling out my perspex windows from my race car, and adding motors, just because I now know how to do it!
Haha! Follow your dreams!
A lot of power windows use a wire instead of linkage, very light weight
Nice staff. It is the best of of it's kind. Easy to follow the demonstration. It can solve the after market parts replacement issue amicably. This a break through for me .Thanks ❤
Your video’s break it all down perfectly. Now I have enough knowledge and confidence to have a go at wiring my old roadster
That’s absolutely awesome! I’m always happy to hear that people find these videos helpful! Thanks for watching!
So simple. Clearly explained. Excellent. Thanks!
Thank you for watching! I am so happy that you found it helpful!
Thank you for your clear precise explaination , it is excellent
Wonderful video and content ! May I suggest, on your breadboard to the left of the pin number identification area, you draw a square large enough to display a representation of the pins on the bottom of a 4 or 5 pin relay and label each pin as well. That way I don't have to hold a relay in my hand, to see where each wire connection goes, while watching the awesome relay designs you come up with 🙂
this guy is man of the year
Awesome video. I’ll have to look and see if you have a video for wiring up 4 window motors off a master driver switch
I just found out about u today looking around youtube. Idk how to thank u,u r d best of d best! I m gonna share your channel w my friends . Lots of love from Ethiopia
Excellent! Thank you for the kind words! I’m thrilled that you are enjoying the content and sharing it! :)
Thanks for making these vids. Learning electricity is much easier this way.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you are enjoying the content!
@@WiringRescue Can you do a vid on pin connectors with the different colored wires? I don't understand how they work. Lol. I have an LED dome light from a Lexus and I'm trying to provide power to it to just mess around but have no idea how to start
Another great video! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and explaining it in a way that is easy to follow along. 🤘😁👍
I’m glad to see that so many people enjoy these videos! Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for the great job make it so easy for me to comprehend thanks you make a great teacher keep the good work.
what a fine thing you are doing here. I have an old tractor with a 24 volt starter that used a series/parallel switch(relay/solenoid). I had problems with the switch all the time. It had 2 80-amp aluminum fuses right on the switch which would frequently burn out. The actual switch for the tractor is crazy exspensive for this old Russian tractor. So I am in the process of rewiring it. I am, and always have been scared of wiring. As I dont know how it works, very well. I would pretty much glaze over when trying to deal with it. The more of your videos I watch, the fog is starting to lift. Particularly in this video, as you explain the relay. The way my tractor was set up, you only needed 24 volts to start, everything else is 12 volts. I bought a 70 amp 24 volt alternator and a continuous 4 pin 250amp 24-volt solenoid. I also have a 2000-watt 24-volt inverter(for AC onboard power) that I want in that circuit. The alternator that I bought from Amazon is a DB ELECTRICAL ADR0047, it has 4 posts on it. Post R tests about 13.8 volts, post AT tests about 28.4 volts, post I also tests 28.4 volts, 4th post is ground. I have a 2awg copper strand for this circuit. I am unsure of what fuse to use here? The old setup was an 80 amp, so that is at least a good place to start. The problem is , it would frequently burn out. The engine at the front and, the batteries in the back, so about 7-8' separates the starter and batteries..maybe this is where the current surge on start burns fuses? My thinking here is to use pole AT on the altenator to make a circut for the starter and the inverter. The tractor already has a big heavy ground switch that I would also like to have in this circuit to avoid parasitic drain. Then I would like to use pole R for the accessories...lights, wipers, etc. I would love to send you pictures of my project if I knew how. Any direct help you could give me to achieve my goals would be greatly appreciated.
So so good. Thank you so much. Great explanation. For my learning, and maybe this is bc Im noob, but I like to focus slowly on the flow of electricity. Not that you didnt do that here, you def did, but I had to pause a bit. Really great, enjoy this and grateful for this very much.
I’m thrilled that you found the video helpful! I’ve got tons more if you want to follow the electricity a bit further! Thanks so much for watching!
Great instructional video, THANKYOU! Any idea how I connect my new 2 pin actuator motor to a 6 pin connector in the door? In fact its a 5 pin as one pin is not in use. Any help from anyone really appreciated.
Your videos have really been helping me with my 56 customline that I'm rewiring. Is there anyway you could do a video on the proper way to send power to a coil / distributer when the key is on and starting?
Hello, thank you so much, was able to wire my convertible top using your power window car wiring video, works Awesome!! Thank you so much
That’s so cool! I’m glad you were able to do that! Thanks for watching and sharing the cool project!
hello sir! Great Tutorial very clear. please make a tutorial for wiring combining two power windows where you can power them up/down with one switch and also can power them up/down separately with another switch. 1 switch for LEFT, 1 switch for Right and 1 switch for combined. thank you!

Thanks for the video. How do I add a second motor to the relay design?
Excellent explanation. I am using this set up right now. I would like to know what gauge wires you are using?

Great work. Quick question How many 13amp window motors can you run off those 2 relays? I thought i red you can parallel the window switches but what happens of they all four are being used at the same time will that pop the fuse? Or do you need 8 relays for 4 windows? Thanks for your help in advance
Great videos thank you alot great content 👍
I’m glad you are enjoying them! Thanks for watching!
Great explanation, it confirmed for me that I had my actuator wired correctly. The problem I'm having is the actuator motor housing is getting grounded when mounted to the chassis. It runs in one direction just fine, but will short and blow the fuse when the polarity is reversed. I have tried to create isolators at the mounting points, but it's used for a parking brake, and that only last so long until it grounds its self again. Should the actuator motor be grounded under this scenario, or is there another solution? Thanks
Thank you very much......😍😍
Thanks for Sharing, very informative 👍 new Subscribers and followers....
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! Good luck with your project!
Hi thank you for explaining! Im searching for those kabels in my car. My power window doesn't get any power. Where can i find easy kabels to fix that?
Well this makes wiring a window motor and switch for a completly different vehicle for what its going into much simpler..explained better than the factory wiring diagram 😂

Good evening, thank you very much for sharing your valuable knowledge. I would like your help. My car ( Toyota Aygo ) on the driver's door does not have a switch for the passenger's window, so I took extra new wires from the (passenger's) window plug and put them on the driver's door. All good so far the new switch I put in the driver's door for the passenger window works but when I press the switch on the passenger door to roll down or up the window it doesn't work. In short, the new switch on the driver's door works while the old one does not. Do I have to put a relay like in the video you uploaded with the lamps ( 5 Pin Relay Wiring For Beginners | Diagram | @WiringRescue ) in the third version or is it a mistake? If you have not created a similar video, it would be good to do it to help others. Thank you very much
this is very helpful. but how will i wire a positive switch instead of a negative switch . I'm using the same switch on my can window and the positive is in the center pin. how will I connect to the relay.or is it still the same but not grounded instead it's a positive wire is hooked up. thank you for any response
So good of a video nobody noticed his nails ... thanks
You mean where I smashed it with a hammer? Yeah. That wasn’t great. It’s healed now though! Thanks for watching!
Hello and thank you for your great job. I have a question for you. I am thinking on trying relay way on a smaller 12v motor. This motor is in always falling hot to cold door in a truck duct system. Basically it turns this little door from ac evaporator to heat radiator and back as needed, as most good working units. My concern is on when to stop pushing the on button so I don’t strip a warm gear or brake hinge on that door. Is there any light 💡 indicator could be installed in the wire chain or something that will stop it from damaging itself. If you could make that video that would be very interesting because it’s for cars and trucks , something simple and reliable and thanks again👍
Thank you so much bro
You’re welcome homie!
Is it possible for the relayed circuit to power two motors at once? So to have the two Pin30 blue wires split into 2 for one motor and 2 for another so you can put two windows up and down at the same time off off one switch?
Thanks!
Whoa! Thank YOU! You totally rock. I appreciate you!
Hello! Great video. I have a question. Do the power window motors have a built-in stop? ( Load Sensor)In other words, if you hold the switch up or down, will the motor sense the top or bottom and stop?
Waiting for wideo explaining how to make motors stop on its own when they open or close in full
great video! As I am trying to learn about how to convert my square body chevy manual to power windows (using stock parts hopefully) there is one thing I still dont understand after watching your video. You have clearly shown how to wire the motors up, but my question is this... In a normal factory power window set up the windows stop automatically when you push the switch and the window reaches its maximum height. But in the case of your video you would have to let off the button just as the window reaches its maximum height.. How do the old school (86 chevy truck) factory power windows just automatically stop at the max window height? I am trying to install factory pwr windows into my chevy using stock parts.. Thank you for answering my long question.. LOL
Ive been patiently waiting for this video. Working on an 02 Mustang race car with electric windows and now my problems are solved. Im assuming I could use the same set up for door locks??? Great videos and THANK YOU!
Haha! I’m glad you like the video! I would think that door locks would be the same, though I haven’t tried it. I may grab a couple door lock actuators and try it!
@@WiringRescue I'll be patiently waiting. Thank you again!!!
how can this be aplied to a Driver Front Master 4 Door Electric Window Switch?
Hi Jeremy, Love your channel your wiring videos are great! You reduced my four 4 pin relay design to run a power window down to one switch! Got a question / challenge. I retired in 2022 so one of my goals or projects is I'm building a 1983 280ZX drag car (old school SBC power with Carb) with some 18-20 year olds from my church. Mentoring is an exercise of patience. We gutted the entire electrical system but now want to create a circuit to operate both LH & RH windows off switches (preferably the OE switches) on the drivers door, and retain an operable RH passenger side window switch while the main power in on. Our plan was to use 5 pin relays, but how do we add a third switch? Thanks, Ed G.
That’s a solid question that I think I need to think through and get back to you. Also thanks for the kind words about the channel and mentoring younger folks! I’ve always wanted to be an automotive teacher / hotrod builder, but found that I can reach a huge audience with KZhead videos. So I’m doing my best, like you, to pass on whatever I can to others while Im still able to do so! Thanks for what you do and I’ll try to figure out your scenario and get back to you.
@@WiringRescue I believe after I asked you that I found a solution. I believe I can (with a 5 pin relay solution) just wire another 3 terminal momentary switch in parallel with the first switch. Now I have to disasseemble the doors to see what type of switches Nissan used!
@@edwardgawrych1828 - that does sound about right to me! Hopefully it’s easy to make it work!
Is it possible to wire a power window motor using only 1 relay?
Would this work with power lock actuators? Another great video, really enjoy these!
I would think so, though I haven’t tried it. Maybe I should!
So I want to use the Amazon momentary push button with LED to relocate my window switches according to your math if I want to control all of them from a center consul I’m going to need eight relays because they only operate one function, so it either completes the circuit or it doesn’t?
If the Amazon switches are not rated for the amperage of your window motors, then yes, you’ll need 8 for 4 windows if you copy this design. It’s a lot, but at least you’ll know how it works and why! :D
Good video
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it!
Hi quick question, what if i change the polarity of the battery , will the negative control switch change into positive?
Is it possible to add another window switch to the outside of a vehicle and maintain the factory window switch? I’ve got a different project I’m working on and need help.. Tia…
Can i control the second circuit with positive current?
what guage wire do u use nithing bigger fits on a relay other than 10 AWG
Is there a way to wire it with a 2 prong momentary push button switch
With 2 switches
Curious can i used the second method with the 2 relays for right and left window regulator at a time or I'll have to make a next circuit fir individual doors
Did u figure it out ??
This is an amazing instructional! If I want to control the relay circuit with 2 different switches (example: one switch at each door, both running the passenger window motor) would I just wire the second switch in parallel with the first one?
Yep! That sounds like it should work! Thanks for watching!
How about using two momentary switches how would that work
I understand sir.
I have a 8 pin window motor, how can i determine which pin does what? i dont have the wire harness. it came from an audi a6 2002.
What a great video🙂....very interesting would like to try it out ....I have a question on how the power suddenly cuts off to the window motor when the window reaches the top or bottom...
I did too, and that’s why I grabbed it with pliers at the end. To be honest, I expected the fuses to blow, and they didn’t. I may need to take apart a window motor to find out how it works.
@@WiringRescue ok that will be great to find out ...because those motors have lots of power if there isn't something that cuts off the power something breaks.
The electric windows automatic function is controlled by the sliding contacts inside the window motor mechanism.
@@tonyreyes9969 Thanks... I hope to find one open so i see how they work..
Can you also use a 4pin relay instead of 5 pin?
Amazing video and one that I really needed to watch. I'm working on a project to have a power sliding rear window installed onto my Chevy Silverado 1500 custom. The truck is not equipped with a powered sliding rear window therefore not equipped with a fuse junction block (under the dashboard) that will accommodate the relays and fuse necessary to operate the sliding rear window. So, I'm taking your approach to resolve the issue. However, I have one question, I want to purchase a roof console with a switch and, although the console has power (unable to find a power source on the current console), where do you suggest I should hide the relays and fuses? and knowing I have power at the fuse junction box, can or should I run a wire to the box for power? Or should I just run a wire to the battery. Thank you for a great video; and I am subscribed to your channel.
It’s tough to fully understand the whole project without being there, but I’ll try my best: - if you have any room in an existing fuse box and can add an additional circuit to it, that’s the route I’d go. Otherwise I’d probably just run a new wire from the battery to a new small fuse box under the hood (check out the 6-spot one from Leash electronics). Then take power from that fuse box to power your new window motor. - the relays can really go wherever they fit. I’d probably put them in a place where you have to run the least amount of wires to and from them. I’d bet that is in the overhead console or close to the window motor.
@@WiringRescue Thank you Ratty and you answered most of my concerns. I'll be the first to tell you I'm no mechanic or electrician. I did find three live circuits in my driver side fuse junction block/box, but I've still not figured out how to get to the back of it. Please forgive my ignorance but if I'm successful at getting behind the fuse box I should just run a black wire to the live/powered fuse located behind the box? What I'm finding is that I've figured everything out except how to get power to the console. Thanks Ratty and my apologies for asking too many questions.
@@FrankSr1st check to see if your fuse box has some additional male spade connectors on the front side of it. Sometimes, you can just plug a wire with a female spade connector on the end, right into the front of the fuse box. Also - use a red wire, not black if you are running power from the fuse box to the console. :)
@@WiringRescue Hi Ratty, thanks for the replies, they're appreciated and realize I'm taking up some of your time. If you don't mind, I'd like to send you an image of the fuse box via email as I can't find any other way to give you a visual. I think I understand what you are referring to when you say "male spade connectors" but I'm no expert and perhaps an image via email will help to explain my dilemma. Thanks Ratty.
I have one question how would you wire up a window with 2 switches one to be on the passenger door and the other to be on the driver side
Hi everybody While I was doing something else, the wiring of the driver power window snapped, all the wires came out. It is a harness of 7 wires for Nissan Sunny 2007 I am in need of what colour wire goes into what slot Please.
Already bought the 6 pin switch 🤦🏾♂️ can that still be used with the relays?

Good gg ❤❤❤👌👌👌✌️💯👍👍🏻
And what if i want to use 2 motor. One on each side. I have to use 4 relays or is there a trick to do it with 2?
can u do 30 amp motor?
Can you also teach us how to read wiring diagram for car repair.
Can you show Me, what component inside the framelsess door. Because i interesting, why when you want to open, the glass door automatically opens slightly. Do you know.? It's cool for me
I'm already subscribe, because youre video make me interesting. GOOD JOB🎉🎉🎉
Thanks - not being wiring-wise, I found this very interesting. I stumbled on your video when searching for a way to convert my power window button to a one-touch scenario. My Ford Ranger (UK) was produced with one-touch only available for window opening. I want to convert it so that one-touch also works with window closing. I contacted @Ford at the time of purchase, as I believe it is a safety issue, but they were not interested. In my view, it is unsafe to have to hold the button up when driving off from a stationary position, after perhaps speaking to someone through the window, especially if the vehicle has a manual gearbox (like mine). One needs to hold the steering wheel with one hand, while changing gears with the other. One has to use one's third hand to close the window! It would be nice if the window closed itself after a "one-touch". So, my question is, have you ever seen a modification option to convert a switch to be one-touch for both opening and closing? That will be very helpful. Thanks again for educating us who have little knowledge of these things.
Wow johnfrancis, this is exactly my question. My car has one-touch on the drivers window but not on the passenger side. I would like to have both one-touch. The two switches are in the centre console and are identical switches with identical wiring, where does the one-touch come in?
👍👍
2015 Chrysler 300 right front window motor has 5 pins how do you test the motor Please help
Is it possible to use two switches to control the one motor? Would I just wire the 2nd switch into the same trigger wires? Or is there a different way to do it Thanks anyone who helps!
Yes - wire the second switch into the same trigger wires for the relays and it should work great. Thanks for watching!
Hi. I'm having an electrician assist me with a special project. Is it possible that power window motors could help raise and lower steel backed magnetic board up and down for a special map in my den? I know unusual but I don't want the map to take forever moving like a TV lift motor. Any Suggestions?
Sounds like a cool project. Maybe look into universal hotrod window regulators. They are very basic, and may work for what you’re trying to do.

Thank you!!!
7:04 I really wish people would stop calling that a 5 pin relay. It is called a single pole double throw relay or a change over relay. Some relays that have 5 pins are only single pole single throw. FYI your circuit on the left can be simplified further by using a 5 pin window switch. The type that has all the pins in a row. You don't have to do all the criss crossing jumpers like you have to do with a DPDT switch. It is all done internally. Another FYI. On amazon you can find a harness , that is prewired, for this exact thing. Makes it way easier to get done. It is similar to what you have on the right, but instead of having to wire both Positives from relay coils you just wire one. One white in this case. The power for the motor is also prewired to both the 87 pins. So only one red wire for the motor power and one red for the relay coils in your case. Color of wires is different on the harness. Two whites wire 16 AWG out for motor on the 30 pins, Two black wires 16 AWG for the Negative to the motor 87a pins, One red main wire 16 AWG (prejumpered) for the Positive to the motor 87 pins, One red 18 AWG for relays 86 pins, Two 18 AWG wires, green and blue, for the negative of the relay coils 85 pins. I have a short video called "Linear Actuator with 2 timers, 2 bosch style relays, fast and easy to wire up harness." with a link to the harness. Nice video and great work on your demo board. Much better than most.
Is it the same concept for a sunroof ?
I think so, cause you have to open it and close it. In order to do that, the motor has to go forward and reverse
