He always finds a way to teach something new, despite he is building the same thing fourth time. He is a very good teacher. He also adds an entertainment factor in his tutorials to not make his pupils bored.
that's called edutainment
Agreed
Good comment. I had to start again from scratch four times before I realized where I was making the same error. Which is really a good way to learn. Ended up understanding better exactly what each option actually did.
I am donut.
You made it to part 3, great job! The icing is one of the most fun parts of the donut-building process. If you are struggling to get the vertices on the drippy parts right, take a step back, breathe, and start over on the icing if you need to. There’s no rush, and they don’t need to look perfect. Just take your time. It’ll turn out great!
haha the way you speak sounds like you are talking to a mentally unstable person that will have a meltdown. but that was me when I did the donut tutorial in 2019.
@@joelt7869 Funny enough, I’m literally just pulling from previous experience working on these donuts. 😅 It’s fun stuff, but it really can feel a bit overwhelming for people just starting out. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s felt this way. :)
@@DangericeDreamsbe a therapist, like actually.
I'm using the same version as Andrew is but I don't have the snap to face option, instead I have the snap project directly. Is this fine?
Thanks man =)
I just want you to know that I am an art student in college, pursuing an animation degree. My Illustration teacher actually recommended I watch your tutorials and learn blender since I am ahead of the class. This is to help me make a pub scene for an animatic I am working on, so that I don't have to be fussing around with perspective in the drawing process. This is so clear and easy to follow! I hear about Blender being a nightmare, and maybe it has something to do with me being an art student in college, but I actually find this to be less intimidating than I ever thought it would be thanks to you!
Good luck. I hope you can get something in the field straight out of college. I dropped out I've worked shitty job after shitty job. I've been lucky to work some in the movie industry but other than that, it's been a struggle. Keep it up and finish this thing as well as your pub scene. You got this!
@@Colesia_EMA good luck to you too, your break will come. I can feel it
@@Lair_in_Limbo I feel it too. I'm 35, single, no kids, and I have alot of spare time. I'm goin for it.
donut bros, we're all gonna make this donut inshallah
inshallah your icing drips as allah wills it to
No1 Quick tip at 09:15 for beginners. Kindly take note so that you dont run into issues. Modifiers are applied only in Object Mode. You cant do that in Edit mode so you should take note. How to move from Edit mode to Object mode, you hit Tab or you go to the top left side of your screen below the Blender icon row, You see Edit mode, click it and then a drop down appears then you select object mode, Then you can go ahead and apply the modifier at the modifier panel. Stay blessed No.2 You might find out that when you click and drag down, Your icing still goes through the donut's body and I faced similar issue. The reason is that you didnt select the tip of the icing at the middle part (Vertexes) To get around this problem. Toggle to X Ray mode. This is at the top right conor of your viewport on top of the axis gizmo or XYZ axis indicator. You see 2 boxes, and 3 globes. choose the 2 boxes icon so you can see the vertexes and you would immediately notice that you didnt select the middle vertex or the tip of the icing.
Bro Thank you actually I was stuck in this part your comment helped me ❤
Thank you! I was in the comment section looking for why my "Apply" was greyed out!

Thanks!
I am legitimately in this comment section to work out why i could not apply it. THANK YOU!
By far the most difficult. I had to restart and took me 2 hours to finish this episode. I don’t regret it because it looks so good even without color

@@mwah4rae Its all on getting used to the hotkeys TRUST ME there is a lot of try and error i started before with a different tutorial from another youtuber so i already knew a lot of of the hotkeys for what he wanted to do, and it still took me about half an hour, dont give up

Thanks for another great tutorial! I have a few tips for people running into problems: 1. If the bottom edge of the icing is hidden inside the donut body, you can select the bottom edge to scale it up a little bit on x-y plane. 2. The key combintation to select more on my PC is control-numpad +, not control-+ 3. Some of my icing was clipped by donut body after I pulled down the bottom edge. I selected a vertex on icing, and used ALT-S with proximity editing to push it out to fix the clipping. I struggled a lot with the icing part in the previous version of this tutorial. This version is much better on a few details, I had far less trouble to follow along. Well done!
thankssss
Thank you for your tips! Do you know why face snap wouldn't work? I tried to apply scale to both objects but it still does not work :s
Thank you. this helped coz i was panicking wondering where the bottom edge of the icing had gone on mine. 👍🏾👍🏾❤❤

I've been doing Blender for more than 2 years now and this is the first time I watch a donut tutorial! I knew there's gonna be something that I didn't know about... thank you.
Wow! The fact this experienced teacher goes through the steps slowly and little by little is really helpful. So excited to continue working on my donut!
how's your donut looking?
@@BlindingSun_ Terrible. Had to restart two times.
Honestly these got so much better over the years. For the first time I tried to create donut in blender 2.7 back in 2021, it was like THE first thing I tried to do in blender ever, and so many things were unclear and required searching for answers on the internet, this is just a smooth sail from start to finish so far, I love it and I know people who will open blender for the first time will love it too
11:40 If select more/less doesn't work for you, it's probably because you don't have a numpad you need to emulate your numpad to make it work. To do this, go to Edit, Preferences, Input, Emulate Numpad. It should work now. I ran into this issue.
This worked for me, thanks so much!!
@@ekkkkksh No problem. Have a great day!

Man this is a throwback to see a new version, I was starting blender right when the last one was posted and it was the first tutorial I ever followed. Thanks for starting mine and many others Blender journeys Blender Guru!
It's a real pleasure to watch your tutorials because you really explain things in a beginner's way but still go into depth. Thank you for being such a good teacher.
I started doing your Blender tutorial on a whim last week and had gotten most of the way through it when I got excited about Blender so I started watching your other videos and reading your blog only to find out that Blender 4.0 was coming out the next day, so now I'm thrilled to get to go through this brand new tutorial series with the new version! Thanks for doing what you do!
WIth the face project bit, if anyone else is having trouble "Project to individual elements" is a CHECKBOX now, diffrent from how it is in the video. Took me like 10m to figure out and hope this helps someone.

For the selecting and hiding of the internals of the icing and adding and removing rings of vertices from the selection, make sure to use the number pad's + key, not the plus on the row with numbers below F12.

thank you! i don't have a numpad so i was very confused.
I've been putting of learning blender (to any degree) for years, but I'm glad I started with this series, amazing quality. The pace is also great, not to slow or fluffy. Great work!
I've been using Blender on and off since 2018 and I've done all your Donut tutorials so far. I've modeled other stuff, this admittedly DOES become basic, but the less button presses you have to learn, the more you see why even basic scenes look great :) There's a lot to learn even if you've done it before :)
It's like the seventh time i started this tutorial over the years, and it's still a pleasure listening. Thx for the great content.
Yaaay part 3! Following and learning as you post. You are a blender legend. Thanks for this!
Loving the tutorials, the fact you seem to a good communicator helps massively. Thank You for sharing your knowledge.
Struggled with some of the modifier bits in this one, but finally got somewhere I'm happy with. Enjoying the process immensely. Once again, thank you Andrew.
The philosophical value of that tutorial is from another world. "The other side of the donut" - love it.
Been cooking up my donut for the last two/three days and just got got through part 3. Thanks for your help my dude, wish me luck boys!
For those who are still having the issue with the icing going through the donut, I found a solution by clicking on the "Snap" menu and checking the "Project individual elements" box. I'm a beginner myself, so I don't fully understand how this checkbox works, but it did the trick for me. Good luck with your donut creations!
This literally solved my issue! Other people’s advice wasn’t working, this did the trick thankss 😅😅
If there are ones still having problem even after this solution they may increase the thickness in the solidify at first if they did not. At least these two solved my problem and currently it works.
Unlike many other tutorials that always either skip over crucial detail like how to even start editing the node, or always goes too slow and tells you each individual step like (move your mouse. Click on the left mouse button. Move away from the button.) etc, your ones are perfect. While some of the keybinds aren't the same as on my computer, a simple search easily fixes these problems. [ You earned a new subscriber! ]
Did the first version of this tutorial when it came out and after years of daily Blender use i still enjoy watching this...and even pick up some handy little shortcuts that i seem to forget
Your newsletter is literally the only one I have, and it does not disappoint, highly recommend :)
Try Shrinkwrap modifier for the icing, in that way you don't need to apply Subdivision modifier and also if for some reason you want to do any change to the main donut the icing will follow
Shrinkwrap is an advanced modifier, all these actions on the video are for beginners to understand and appl the 20% basic
I used Shrinkwrap after I did my extrusions. That had the best result for me after applying the Subdivision Surface modifier. That way I was guaranteed enough mesh to work with. Shrinkwrap kinda seals the deal and gives it that extra layer of Snapping I noticed. Similar to real Shrinkwrap when it's used to wrap something real tight.
I consider myself a advanced Blender user. Yet i catch myself watching and doing these donut series. Because somehow he comes up with stuff that i never used before. Such as changing the inner crease in the solidify edge data. I've never played around with that, and now i can think of multiple situations when i wished i knew this earlier.
It's funny to be back to watching Blender videos. It was one of the first software packages I learned several years ago when I was starting my 3D journey. I didn't stick with it because I was told that Maya was necessary to get a job in the industry. So, I learned Maya. Then, I got my first 3D job, which is where I still work now, and come to find out that the department uses 3DS Max. So, I Iearned Max. Now, Blender has received exponentially more updates and improvements than Maya and Max and is accepted in the industry. I'm tired of paying a lot of money on software subscriptions and dealing with rigid/limited functionality. So, now I'm learning Blender again, but with great gratitude for such organized and clear tutorials. Thank you for making these great videos and putting them out there for everyone to benefit from!
I started out learning Maya in high school, but Blender is great because it's free lol If I may ask, where do you work?
@Wiifan5551 I work for Ashley furniture in their CGI department. The focus is mainly archviz content, so the models I make and QA are mostly high poly, but we also work with other folks to convert everything to low poly for AR/VR usage.
thank you for making this. blender 4.0 is quite difficult for me and this series is a huge help
Thanks so much for making this, I just started watching your last tutorial and got stuck at part three and this resolved every problem I was encountering and explained it thoroughly.
Hi Andrew. I started a couple of years ago in Blender, but got caught up in other stuff. I returned to Blender recently, and to my surprise, you made an updated tutorial! I can see clearly how much effort you put into discussing small problems that we might face in certain parts. So just wanna say: Wow! You are an amazing teacher. Keep going🦾
in 9:45 if your "apply modifier" is greyed, make sure you temporarily switch to Object mode instead of Edit mode. It should work then (actually you can see it changing on Andrew's screen if you pay attention, which I didn't :) )
THANK YOU, HOLY-
I click it and it says ''the modifier is disabled, omiting its application''
now I fixed it, but I dont see the vertices anymore help this is giving me a headache

Maaaan, I'm meditating on your tutorials. So incredibly detailed and helpful. I'm a filmmaker, but was always amazed by 3D and VFX, so decided to give it a try and absolutely loved just changing the shape of the donut in part 2. :D so satisfying to see it bounce. This is an absolutely awesome tutorial series as always. I have been here since the blender 2.8x days. Too bad my computer is to old to be able to run blender 4.0. :(
It doesn't need a new version so far to follow this tutorial
@@andriimarchuk8121 I got about halfway through this video before I realized I was using 2.92 instead of 4.0. I only realized cause the all components face snapping option wasn't there. Kind of cool how similar the UI was kept while adding new features
As in the older tutorials, when you're doing the icing, try looking at donut references to make it look more natural.
Ideally using real donuts, picked up either at your local bakery or a grocery store. Not necessarily for practical reasons (although yes), but primarily so you have delicious chunks of frosted/glazed fried dough to munch on.
This is by far the best tutorial I have ever seen. I learned most things off of tutorials, but this is just another level.
You are a saint, just picking up 3d stuff because its free and interesting. I have to say you make this feel so fun and a goal that can actually be reached.
The "Ctrl + Plus" and "Ctrl + Minus" commands are tricky. You'll probably have trouble at first. It's actually "Ctrl + NUMBERPAD PLUS" and "Ctrl + NUMBERPAD MINUS"
Thank you!! This fixed my issue!
Hiii 😁 , If you are having trouble creating a wavy edge (at 13:05) and you do not have a mouse or are having trouble with your mouse wheel, you may notice that moving vertices affects everything. This is because the Proportional Editing Influence radius has not been decreased, causing everything to move by default. To fix this, simply use the mouse wheel (the most optimal method) or press Page Up to increase and Page Down to decrease the radius. Once you have done this, you can shape the icing as desired .
Thanks Man
Man I remember the times when I was just a beginner trying to learn blender and the first tutorial I watched was from you. Good old days :)

Something I learned from CG Fast Track Instead of duplicating with Shift + D Try using Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste your object in. This is good if your object has materials on it and you want to not only copy the object but it's exact materials as well. This method will guarantee that. If your mesh is still just a mesh though and you haven't put any materials on it or your copied objects, either method will work.

Modifying the Edge Data > Crease inner has no effect on the shape on the icing for me.. I'm on Blender v4.0.1
Same for me, idk how to fix it other than maybe join the objects?
Same. Ever find a solution?
Nvm I think I figured it out. @15:48 -- For whatever reason, having that second "subdivion" modifier added, it then was able to make a difference when I changed the initial "solidify" modifier edge data.
If you find that the bottom of your icing mesh is hiding beneath the donut after editing a vertex, you can fix it by resnapping the entire outside bottom row of vertices to the face of the donut. You do this by Alt + Click a vertex on the bottom row which should select the entire ring. Then change your snapping to "Face nearest" once you edit it will snap to the closest face, which would by the outside of the donut on it's corresponding side. If you snap with "Face Project" it will take all the vertices and snap them towards the face you're looking at. Once you hit the edit button "G" everything will snap to the face accordingly and then you can left click to commit the snapping.
you're a lifesaver! Thank you
There's something so cool about these videos. Like if you're struggling on something, you might get frustrated. But then you remember, you're just making a delicious donut.
The subdivision modifier should be on 1 if you are following the tutorial. If you have it on 2 and apply the subdivision modifier, you will get many more points than you need and it will complicate things for you. Thank you blender Guru, you have made learning this very simple. May God bless you abundantly

I remember when I tried to do this last year, on the tutorial before this one. This is where I stopped, but I made it past this time! I'm going to finish my donut this time, no matter what.
Ok so the only issue I’m having is the snapping to the face. I was able to get the parts that I adjust on the sides (the icing) and those areas would then snap to the doughnut but the rest is just kinda floating. So I would then have to go all the way around forcing each area to snap to the faces. Any suggestions are much appreciated. This is also only my 2nd day plz be nice everyone lol

Don't forget to apply your Subdivision Surface modifier. To do that, go to your Modifiers, click on the little arrow on the top right and hit "Apply" When you first copy and form your icing, it's not going to have a lot of vertices. If you apply your Subdivision Surface modifier to add more vertices, you'll have more mesh to work with and you'll notice you have more control. Don't give up. There's going to be a lot of instances where you spend 30 minutes to an hour finding out something stupid. It's all part of the process unfortunately. People like myself will do our best to help, but some things you just have to keep at it to figure out. I believe in you all.

THE donut blender man 💜🍩 thanks so much for all your tutorials king
I'm bout to be so tired of looking at the same pink donut

I crashed my windows
I crashed my lap
After watching it 5-6 times, was finally able to create one, excited for the next video
I'm just starting out learning blender from your tutorial video! I can't wait to be able make donuts 😋
I'm going to sound like I'm nitpicking, because I am. As a brand new user, I need meticulous explanation of things which isn't happening. You speak and move a little too fast and didn't explain the fact that as you add modifiers they stack up in the lower right hand window. Also, I'm not sure, but if you have a modifier like subdivision already assigned to an object, you can go back and scroll through the lower right hand window and find that Modifier and hit APPLY to add more subdivisions to that object, correct? Instead why can't you type in a new value for the amount of vertices if you want more? Hitting apply seems to be adding another instance of the same operation you've already done to the object. This app has non-destructive editing, correct?
Bro needs a nap😂😂😂
The modifiers are the non-destructive edit. They can be removed anytime by hiding from viewport or deleting them. If you apply them, you have changed you mesh in a permanent way. And they keep the file light, you don't want to have too many vertices.
So much knowledgable content can't get enought of it.🥰
Thanks a lot I learned so many new stuff from you today a bit too much to handle all at once but I'm sure with time and practice it gets easier!
Editing my previous comment from yesterday. So I decided to start completely over for about the 20th time just to make sure I had a clean slate. I inadvertently started watching the 3.0 series I had zero issues. I don’t know if it was because you use a different scale or the fact that you cut the donut in half and then duplicated the top but I made it all the way to geometry nodes today in about 3.5 hours! I even downloaded the blender add-on from your site and it worked perfectly. Thanks for everything.
I just want to say thank you. I draw just for fun, I already learned how to make a Lego toy in Maya, and now I'm studying your donut. Thank you very much for the tutorial. Greetings from Brazil
