What facing 200 prison years taught me about happiness | Shaun Attwood | TEDxHSG

Can you imagine what it is like facing a 200 year prison sentence? Join Shaun Attwood, a former stock-market millionaire and Ecstasy supplier turned public speaker, author and activist, as he describes what it was like to end up in Arizona’s deadliest jail and most importantly, what his shocking experience has taught him about happiness in life.
Shaun Attwood is a former stock-market millionaire and Ecstasy supplier turned public speaker, author and activist, who is banned from America for life.
Shaun’s writing - smuggled out of the jail with the highest death rate in America run by Sheriff Joe Arpaio - attracted international media attention to the human rights violations: murders by guards and gang members, dead rats in the food, cockroach infestations…
While incarcerated, Shaun was forced to reappraise his life. He read over 1,000 books in just under six years. By studying original texts in psychology and philosophy, he sought to better understand himself and his past behaviour. He credits books as being the lifeblood of his rehabilitation.
Shaun now tells his story to schools to put young people off drugs and crime. He campaigns against injustice via his books and blog, Jon’s Jail Journal. He has appeared on the BBC, Sky News and TV worldwide to talk about issues affecting prisoners’ rights.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I don't know the cruel details of what he went through only by the snippets of content I hear in this video. And speaking to people is nerve-wracking at the best of times. I just got to watch this talk today. Came across his story a month ago via UniLad when watching docus on the rave scene in the UK. His story was suggested. Didn't realize until recently he has his own podcasts. Now I understand his podcasts better knowing his history. And it takes guts to admit to wrongdoing and to try and protect others.

And just like any other criminal he takes a shine to, President Trump pardoned him just as he was about to go get locked up inside his own Hellhole for a year for criminal contempt. I have no sympathy for him. It depends what you mean by socialism you apparently have a good health service as we do in the UK unlike America. The so called socialists in the Us are only concerned with PC and legalizing drugs. That is why they can't get a health service.

  • i have his book prison time, and after reading about Bud and Ken it was kinda shocking to see pictures of them xD. shaun inspires me a lot, as i think his mentality that he has created and curated due to very, very hard times and troubles he's had is amazing, and the fact he has chosen to actively fight against Arpaio's concentration camps is also equally amazing. would love to meet him someday.
